None really, just wishful thinking for franchise fatigue.

I'm tired of the franchise. But I've been tired of the franchise since 2007.

Never underestimate the power of teenagers and people who wish they were still teenagers.

Plus, I've never read any of his books, but John Green's pretty awesome.

Maybe you can make up for it by taking her out to a Benico Del Toro movie.

Edge of Tomorrow was really rather good, kind of a shame it's being beaten by Maleficent and Fault of our Stars.

    610 million worldwide for DOFP.

Less than 100 million to pass The Winter Soldier for #1 in 2014.

If there's one thing I care about more than the quality of the movie, it's the hundreds of millions of dollars it generates for the studio.

Normally, I would agree with you, Even. However, as you yourself have reviewed, MCU movies are awful by comparison. They deserve to be relatively less successful than this superior product.

And by posting the gross box office totals in the designated box office thread, I am surely revealing that I value those millions more than the quality of the film. Surely.

To be fair, this is a Star Wars messageboard -- if people met us they would probably obsess over BO too...

Box office take seems to be the new metric for judging movies. Quality doesn't seem to be a concern :p

Box office is objective, so it has that sleek appeal of being indisputable. It's that or risk being wrong.

I saw a Box Office Mojo or other site refer to this summer box office as being slow, or that Transformers was set to jumpstart a weakened season or something. I couldn't tell; there are so many dang movies in the same genre now that it's easy to forget what was put out just a few weeks ago and "trending" all over the place for a few weeks leading up to it and then the opening weekend and following few days.
That said, I have to remember that the only one of these movies I've actually gone to see is Edge of Tomorrow.
Still, it's impossible to predict what won't be big, or what ultimately will still be considered big a month later even though it made $150 to $250 million in a few weeks. Everything just seems so disposable now and I'm kind of glad STAR WARS Episode VII won't be out in the summer of next year. With nostalgia prevalent in the media for summer movie seasons 20 years ago, 25 years ago, and 30 years ago, it is easy to compare to when a movie like Ghostbusters, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, or Batman, or Forrest Gump and The Lion King would rule the summer and be felt everywhere all year. People wanted to see the movies but didn't all rush to them opening weekend. Theatrical attendance seems so arbitrary, yet the big opening weekends and much lower box office numbers the following weekends show that a lot of people really are eager to jump on a new movie as quickly as a possible. (I would probably go more if I lived closer to a theater and didn't try to avoid crowds.) I never seem to meet people who actually admit to going to the movies much.

Worldwide, Transformers made in 3.5 days what Edge of Tomorrow made its entire run. It will beat out X-Men for top movie of the summer unless Guardians of the Galaxy is a big upside surprise.
