How sure were we of a possible May release date in the first place? I recall no insider information that suggested that; in fact, I haven't heard a peep about a May 2015 release date from any quarter other than the apparent desire of people here on these forums to see it happen. And quite frankly, I don't see how a difference of seven months is supposed to be so catastrophic when we're talking about something we're supposed to schedule approximately two years out in any case. People are only bummed because they got their hopes up and now they're disappointed, but I'm not really sure it's justified here. We complain when they don't release anything; we complain when they release something. Sheesh...

Then it would have been rushed epicly for a May 2015 release date by your logic, ergo you have absolutely no reason to feel negative over this date.

I'm pretty happy, I wanted them to movie it back to Christmas anyway. Now I might actually get to take a vacation during 2015. Summer had me worried.

How lagged do you think it would be if they released in May 2015?

For those who are wondering if this Christmas release is going to start a trend for the trilogy, I wouldn't put money on EPISODE VIII being released in the winter on 2017. It would be going head to head with AVATAR 3.

But according to the internet no one in the whole world likes Avatar.

Now Disney needs to confirm that Ford, Fisher & Hamill are definetly returning and I will go spoiler-free (with the exception of Trailers & Promotional Material) until December 2015.

"We're very excited to share the official 2015 release date..."
(stifled murmur is heard in the background. Alan Horn pauses briefly to look in that direction and then back to the reporter)
"...for Star Wars: Episode VII, where it will not only anchor the popular holiday filmgoing season but...."
(another murmur is heard, this time with kicking noises)
    "...excuse me.."
(Horn pulls a syringe out of his pocket and runs to the other room. A yell of "WHO WOKE IGER UP?" is heard. After a few seconds, the murmur and kicking noises cease. Horn comes back, sits down calmly and addressed the reporter once more.)
"...it will not only anchor the popular holiday filmgoing season but also ensure our extraordinary filmmaking team has the time needed to deliver a sensational picture."

Apparently it was Arndt who was lagging behind but that problem has been...

Well, there was nothing set in stone but Disney was obviously aiming for a May 2015 release date. They were constantly alluding to a summer release in all press packets.

For me, I always thought the May 2015 release date was incredibly unrealistic when it was first announced during the Lucasfilm purchase. I still don't believe they will make that winter 2015 release date either; but at the very least its acknowledgment to get the film released "when its ready."

    I'm... sad.

I hope, perhaps unrealistically, but I do hope they push it back to May of 2016. To destroy a 30+ year tradition is... intolerable. I mean, it's an interesting way to show Lucas (whose birthday is in May) passing down the torch, but... ugh

Really happy that we finally have a release date!

When this was first rumored several months ago, I will admit that I wasn't really on board with it. I have since come to terms with the idea of them breaking the May tradition (hey, if it means more time for them to get it right - more power to them!) and now that it's officially announced, I'm excited! I can't wait!

Also, this is going head to head with Warcraft at the moment. I'd expect Universal to blink first.

I just hope they release it whenever we get the best film. I'm not as worried about them releasing it during a special month.
