Dunno what the species is, but I believe the creature itself is a fairly large, dragon looking thing. Gee, that doesn't help much does it? :p
There's a picture of it in The Illustrated Star Wars Universe. A recommended buy for any SW/Mc Quarrie fan :)
Don't quote me, but I could've sworn there was also a picture of an unmasked Tusken. It looked wolfish. I 'unno. Bib knows more about that I'm sure.

I just assumed it looked like a sea serpant.

    Bib,

The Swamp Creature that lived in another swamp that was not shown in the movie, but people are curious about...

That Swamp Creature. Definitely not the one that took R2.

    :)

    THE.

Yeah, the Essential Guide to Species calls it the dragonsnake. It also mentions another swamp predator on Dagobah called the swamp slug.

Yeah, I think that's the giant thing you can see in the old Super Empire Strikes Back game's Dagobah levels on the SNES. There's an illustration (McQarrie in origin?) floating about somewheres.

Reading TWD's posts can be fun and insightful, children.
What TheSecondQuest mentioned was the swan slug and the creature in question is the Dragon Snake.

The Illustrated Star Wars Universe features a ton of McQuarrie artwork......included drawings of both the slug and the dragon snake. I'd say it was a slug that got R2.....from the description in the book. They eat just about anything. Check out the book at your bookstore.

If they eat about anything, then it couldn't ahve been the slug, since whatever grabbed R2 spit him out ;)

I got it too. They have to put that line back in. Even if Hamill has to re-record the dialogue.

The ESB is also the only movie so far where creatures try to eat the heroes on two different worlds.

Star Wars might be the only trilogy where the same guy almost gets eaten in every single movie:

    ANH-Dia Noga almost eats Luke.

    ESB-Wampa almost eats Luke.

ROTJ-Rancor almost eats Luke AND he's threatened with being fed to the Sarlacc.

I made that first post hoping that the next person would respond the way you did. Kudos!
