    Prologue

?Denon control, this is Imperial shuttle, Swift Vengeance, requesting landing clearance.?

?Swift Vengeance, this is Denon control, permission granted. Please await escort and follow landing guidelines to landing bay 307.?

?Copy, Denon control, proceeding as instructed.?

Moff Rohtul sat patiently in the passenger bay of the Imperial shuttle. It had been over two years since the end of the war with the Yuuzhan Vong, and nearly that long since he had been appointed the Empire?s representative to the Galactic Alliance. Every few months each government?s representatives made the trip to the Alliance capital to discuss mutual concerns and matters of galactic importance. In Rohtul?s opinion, each council session was nothing more than another attempt by Chief of State Cal Omas to convince each independent government to see things his way.

The Imperial Moff had never been happy with the deal struck between Grand Admiral Pelleon and Chief of State Omas. However, his duty was to the Remnant, and this arrangement had proved fruitful on more than one occasion. He was very proud of the fact that he was considered one of the most level-headed and clear thinking Moffs to ever sit on the Remnant?s ruling council. That level of respect had earned him considerable power within the military ranks and gained him the ear of the Grand Admiral himself. That same respect did not hold the same influence over the other members of the council, which in his firm belief, was the reason he was made their representative. The other Moffs considered him a threat and therefore exiled him to these unbearable meetings on this Rebel world. It had taken him a great deal self-control to get past his Imperial upbringing before feeling even remotely comfortable at the meetings.

One of the few benefits of coming to these meetings was a certain young woman that he had encountered last year. She was the daughter of a very wealthy family from Coruscant. Even after the transformation of the Galaxy?s Jewel by the Yuuzhan Vong, her family had stabilized their shipping company and prospered further during the war. She had grown up within the social elite and had acquired the proper social skills that would have been ideal in the Imperial Court of Palpatine. Such grace and behavior was hard to find in Rebel controlled space. This fact, and her astounding beauty, made her a perfect mistress for him.
He was old enough to be her father, if not her grandfather. In fact she was around the same age as one of his sons, but his attraction to her had never been a matter of what some would consider a crisis of vanity. He had become entranced with her when he first saw her, and each subsequent day with her had only proved that they were meant for each other. She had a keen intellect and was completely devoted to him. She would spend countless hours listening with utter fascination as he described his meetings with the Galaxy?s most powerful people, and then would help him alleviate his frustrations in a way only a woman can.

He had not had the pleasure of Eliaza?s company for sometime, and was looking forwar

    Chapter 1

?Colonel Solo reporting as ordered, sir.?

Jaina stood at perfect attention in front of her commanding officer, and waited for his acknowledgement before dropping her salute. She had never been this nervous when approaching the general before. But, she had a feeling what this would be about, and she was not particularly looking forward to what would happen. Her squadron had been on escort detail when the Imperial Ambassador?s shuttle had been attacked. The initial investigation had shown residual traces of nergon-14 explosives and proton scoring on the debris. The evidence would suggest that a proton torpedo had destroyed the shuttle. Since the shuttle was not equipped with torpedo launchers, the shuttle must have been attacked by another ship. Since her squadron had been escorting the Ambassador, it was her responsibility for the safety of the shuttle. Now, she would have to answer for this mystery.

General Darklighter looked up from his desk and motioned for her to sit. A year after the war, the former Rogue Squadron commander had taken a promotion, and a desk job at Starfighter Command, in order spend more time with his family. Jaina could still remember her excitement when Gavin had chosen her as his replacement. The first few weeks were a little rough, as she had only served with the Rogues for a limited amount of time at the beginning of the war. However, as Wedge had once said to her, ?Once a Rogue, always a Rogue.? Her war record and experience quieted the few voiced concerns about her appointment, and now the Rogues were practically like family to her. Their first assignment had been on the task force led by General Farlander. Under his command, she had spent the last year chasing down the remnants of the Yuuzhun Vong and the Peace Brigade with the Rogues. They had finally been circulated out of the front lines and were now stationed here on Denon. Her current station assignment had only elevated her growing sense of unease.

Two years ago, she and Jag Fel said their goodbyes on the world of Zenoma Sekot. While it was one of the hardest decisions she had ever made, they both knew it was for the best. Jaina and Jag had new responsibilities after the war, and both of them needed to find their place in the galaxy. They had kept in touch over the years, but because of their positions, they never had the opportunity to get together. Jaina was proud of Jag?s accomplishments as the Chiss representative, and was not surprised to hear him referred to as the most levelheaded member of the Galactic Council. He had taken his role in the government as seriously as he did everything, which meant he strove for perfection. Jaina on the other hand initially had trouble finding her own path.

For the first year she had tried to discover what role the Force wanted her to take. After handing command of Twin Suns squadron to her long time friend, Lowbacca, Jaina spent time among the other Jedi. She had helped establish the new Jedi Praxeum on Ossus, and even did a little teaching while she was there. Her friend Zekk had come to Ossus and had found that he had a real talent for instructing the newest generation of Jedi. He had become one of the youngest of the new instructors to take on an apprentice, and found the balance in the Force that he longed for. Jaina spent her time mainly with the children. They were fascinated by the young woman?s stories from her youth, and she soon found herself to be a role model to many of the young, would-be Jedi. This became a problem for Jaina early on, as she felt she was neither ready, not worthy to become someone?s role model. After some reluctance, and many attempts by Kam and Tionne to convince her to stay, she had decided that she was not yet ready to train the new generation of Jedi and came back to fly for the Alliance.

Now, she was reinvested in her career as a squadron commander and had started trying to build a life for herself here on Denon. The planet was not only the capital of the Alliance, but was also were the Galacti

Wow, VERY nice! I like how Gavin slipped that in there at the end. ;) I DON'T like how Jaina couldn't sense anything through the force before the attack. I wonder if the woman responsible is a Vong in disguise or a dark Jedi. :p Another sweet post! :)

Interesting, the fact the shuttle detonated immediately the repulsorlifts came on made me think it had been a bomb (either proton grenade or a proton torpedo warhead) but now I?m wondering about a shadow-bomb which could have some nice implications about Eliaza ?Honey Trap? Tosh.

Of course the statement from the Empire about the shuttle having been inspected has to be taken with reservations. They would want to shift the blame and in any case Moff Rohtul had plenty of enemies in the Empire who would have been happy to cooperate in causing his death so this could be used against the ?Rebels?.

Here's some replies for all of my newly acquired fans. :)

NarundiJedi- Thanks for the compliment. Hmm...Vong or Dark Jedi??? We shall see

Jags_Scoundrel- Oh yes, Jaina gets the honor of being his bodyguard, and I'm sure she will keep a close eye on his body.

VaderLVR64- I see my fisherman skills have paid off on new readers..I'm glad you're here. More to come for sure. ;)

Chimpo_the_Sith- And I'm glad you did find it, though I probably should have mentioned the title when I first plugged it at the cantina. Good to have you here.

    Reesie- Thaaaanks!!!

whats-her-face- Oh, it will be good. At least I hope it will :D

NYCitygurl- Another new reader! Yessss! Thank you.

JAGSGURL15- I won't give any details about med bay mush. But I can promise there will be mush of some kind. [face_mischief]

_JM_- Ahh the mysterious shuttle explosion...
What could it mean?? And the Empire too, hmm???

jags_gurl- Another reader falls for my bait. I should have my own fishing show...And as far as more, it follows.

I had planned on posting every Mon, Wed, and Fri next week, but a family thing has sprung up and I'll be at my sister's for the next week or so.

Lightside: I get to spend time with my nieces and nephews. :D

    Darkside: She has dialup.

So, I will hopefully keep with the schedule, but if not, they might be a little irregular. Hopefully a little time with the Rogues will tide you over.

The pilot?s briefing room was full of activity by the time Jaina walked in. No doubt, the Rogues were discussing the previous day?s events and even formulating possible explanations on what happened. Her pilots were professionals, and more importantly they were problem solvers. They would not be focusing on the implications it would have on themselves, unlike many other pilots. As she crossed the room to the command table, she thought that perhaps her pilots might also spend the next few weeks doing a little more than training.

She saw the concerned look on her Executive Officer?s face as she took the seat beside him at the command table. Major Telon Bren had been Jaina?s first obstacle when she took command of the Rogues. It was widely assumed that Tel would be promoted when Gavin retired, and she had thought there would be some resentment towards her arrival. However, Major Bren was a dedicated officer and had known Jaina from her early days in the Rogues. At a private meeting between the two of them, he had told her that he agreed that she was the logical choice to succeed the General and would do everything in his power to make her transition as easy as possible. Since then, Tel had become a good friend and had proven to be an extremely capable XO. Jaina gave Tel a wink as she handed him the squadron?s new orders, the act having the desired affect of allaying his concerns for her and transforming his face back into its usual business mode.

?All right everyone take your seats.? After the conversations died down, an act that was gratefully quick, she rose and addressed her pilots. ?I?m sure all of you are concerned about the events yesterday. First off, the results of the ongoing investigation have been transferred to your datapads for you to review. So far, there is no explanation as to how the Ambassador?s shuttle was destroyed, but there is significant evidence to suggest a torpedo was involved. As such, Command has decided it is in our best interests to remain off the active duty roster until the investigation is complete.? The news brought a varied response from her pilots; confusion and shock clearly showed on many of the newer members of the squadron, the older members showing a little more understanding and even acceptance. ?Until then, we will be on a training schedule.? The room began filling with moans and complaints, she could not really blame her pilots, but at least her next business might liven up their spirits. ?Since this squad is known for making the impossible possible, I have a secondary assignment for all of you during your training time. I want you to come up with reasons why the shuttle blew up, and how it happened. Command is going to be looking for a scapegoat to appease the Remnant, and I want you to give them the actual culprit.?

These orders had the effect she had hoped for. She could almost see the gears turning in her pilot?s heads as they come up with various strategies to accomplish their mission. ?On a side note, Major Bren will be assuming command of the squadron for the next few weeks, as I have been temporarily reassigned.? This time even the senior members could not hide the shock from their faces.

Lieutenant Latia Yissik raised her hand to ask a question. The young, blue skinned Twi?lek was a newer member of the squadron. Her piloting skills and youthful exuberance were only matched by her instinctive curiosity. ?Colonel, May I ask why you have been reassigned??

With some reluctance, Jaina answered, ?General Darklighter has requested me to take command of the security detail assigned to the Chiss ambassador.?

Hoots and hollers erupted from her pilots. Jaina knew many of the other pilots had inclinations on why she never dated. From the amount of good-humored jibing, apparently the entire squadron knew of her relationship with Jag. Jaina tried to keep her cheeks from blushing, but decided to let them continue for a little longer. The Rogues had taken a hard blow with their reassignment, and they deserved to have their spirits livene

Jaina was convinced Wes had made a couple clones of himself just to cause her trouble while he was gone.

Well, of course he did. What kind of place would the galaxy be without a Wes Janson causing trouble? ;)

After a few minutes, Jaina decided it was best to get things under control and tried to address the group. ?Alright everyone settle down.?

?So, Colonel,? started Corsh, ?What exactly is the dress code for an ambassador?s bodyguard??

    ?Okay, people.?

?I?m sure the Colonel will have no problem keeping an eye on the Ambassador?s body,? Maydor stated with a smile.

    ?Calm down, everyone.?

?Does dinner and a holo-drama still count as a date when you?re a bodyguard?? asked Corsh.

And, if I hear a single ?Yub, Yub, Commander? you will all have latrine duty for a week. Dismissed.?

While the two captains had the unique gift of infuriating her to no end, at least they were good for morale, and so far their behavior had not rubbed off on the others. The pilots began filing out of the briefing room with smiles that were previously absent from the group. As the last few exited the door, she heard a deafening, ?Yub, Yub, Colonel!?

A pair of Jansons? Excellent, he?s a superb pilot, a crack shot, and a fine man to have on your side in a fight. :)

Did enjoy how Jaina wanted the Rogues to have their spirits livened up, but not to the extent of wanting to put up with Korsh and Maydor in excess.

At least she managed to squelch them enough with the threat of latrine duty that they said ?Colonel? rather than ?Commander? :)
