Every fighter in the SCA looks at this pic and their butt cheeks instinctively clench. The guy on the right is about to be subjected to a spanking in the form known "affectionately" as the two cheek *** wrap.

 

I hand forged this and turned the handle.

 

Most impressive! Do you have your own forge? What kind of wood is that grip?

 

It's rosewood. The forge is a communtiy forge. We also have crucibles that have their own program language. Geek heaven!

 

Sarge, have you been to the White Tower in London?

No, I haven't spent much time at all in Britain. I got to walk around Cambridge for a couple hours when we stopped for fuel on a return flight from the desert, and that's just about all I've seen of England. I'd love to visit the Tower, the Imperial War Museum, and HMS Victory.

Hey, this is a cool thread . . . I missed it back in the day. I used to do SCA fencing and Iaido, but I confess that my favorite thing ever was to fight with those PVC and duct tape boffer swords. Closest thing to lightsaber combat I ever experienced.

The moments of my greatest glee came when I'd challenge these would-be sword jocks to boffer fight at SF conventions. They'd roll their eyes and reluctantly agree, because I'm short, chubby, female, and totally unprepossessing. Then I'd take them apart.

 

Yeah, boffer swords are a blast. And if you put reflective tape over the duct tape and fight at night under street lamps, the only thing you're missing for lightsaber duels is the sound effects.

 

That's what the letter V is for! "Vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv! VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV!!"

The only negative thing I can say about boffers is that they get really hard in the cold. I was out sparring in a snowstorm under the streetlights one night, and I caught a blow to the hand that broke my finger. I kept on fighting, and got another one that almost dislocated my jaw. That was the beginning of the end of my boffer career.

I was chatting to the guy who owns my gym this morning - he has a friend who fights in these things and has a huge collection of swords, including a 6' Claymore. I really need to make friends with him!

 

yeurgh You've mentioned archery a couple of times. What's up with that? In my head, I'm seeing you with a 7' yew longbow loosing clothyard shafts with bodkin heads that pierce steel breastplates layered over Spanish mail and silk gambesons at 200 paces.
