From people I know that have seen it, the concensus is it's good, but not as good, nostalgic without being saccharine, and if you love the characters, you still will.

Really looking forward to this. I came to the original really late (I was only about 9 months old when it came out), but it quickly became a favourite of mine.

I'll take that. It was never going to be better than the original anyway

Alot of people have been telling me not to be too excited about this movie because they feel the same care won't go into the script and cinematography, and that they've "waited too long." I feel if it were any other movie, director, or actors maybe it would be at risk of having a hype-to-flop Arrested Development season 4 had IMO. From all the reviews I've read, and from the scenes, shots and trailers that have been released it seems this will be a hit and true to the original Trainspotting style that makes it so great.

I've tried to avoid most plot leaks because I don't want to be too spoiled, but does anyone know if this will follow the second book "Porno"?

It's supposed to as far as I know. I'm in the process of reading it now.

I pre-ordered it on Vudu earlier this month, got the blu ray in Saturday. Made my day. I've read every Irvin Welsh novel ever written, anytime they come out with a film based on his books (loosely in this case) I'm all for it.

JoinTheSchwarz, you know those "kids react to" videos on YouTube where millennial brats are introduced to things like dialup internet, Super Nintendo and Metallica and they're amazed, confused and amused by them whilst being useless?

I would like to see a variation of this where Wocky reacts to 90s electronica.

Never got a chance to see it in theatres, which is a shame because it was airing at a theatre about a half hour from my place and I thought, stupidly, "Oh, they'll drive the USB stick down the QEW and show it here!" And never did. So had to order the blu ray

But finally watched it and I totally loved it. It definitely has a different, sadder vibe than the original considering where the characters are now in their lives but still has moments of drama and crazy fun. Boyle definitely recaptures the visual vibe of the first film and even with some more elaborate lighting and camera trickery he's picked up over the last 20 years. And the actors immediately fall back into their roles so completely it's pretty amazing. Diane only pops up in one scene but it's good to see she actually moved on with her life and her final parting words to Renton are actually really funny in the context of their original relationship. I will say, I did miss the fact that Renton isn't voice over narrating the entire film but there are a few moments, him returning to the "Choose life" mantra is pretty fantastic.

There's great usage of clips of the first film throughout, not fully but just quick, dream-like cutaways that provides context for scenes. What's darkly funny / sad is how Begbie ends up, like his initial conversation with his lawyer is hilarious and how he gets out of prison is neat, and when he reunites with his wife and "Franco Jr." (you know Begbie would have just named his kid Jr.) he basically treats them like members of his "gang" than actual family. Which totally leads into how ticked off he is, especially at Renton for making off with his cash. In fact, everyone is really ticked off at Renton immediately for taking off 20 years ago and they basically start from there.

It definitely has an ambling, directionless plot progression but the 1st movie did that too anyway (also basically the story is "everyone stay away from Begbie because he's going to go completely bonkers"). But even though they're older and not much wiser, they still fall into trying to perpetrate dodgy schemes. There's also a nice meta-commentary at one point when Renton, Sick Boy hold a "memorial" for Tommy and Sick Boy basically says "It's nostalgia!"

This here may be my favourite scene in the film because it kicks in some of Renton's trademarked voice over and Renton and Sick Boy are pretty much caught dead to rights in the midst of one of their dodgy schemes and they're clearly coming up with a way out on the spot and it just absolutely sings. Literally!
