    Tag der Einheit!

Normally, on this day, I celebrate with a German friend of mine, and my family. However, I recently moved away, so I have no German friends or family to celebrate with. Oh well.

Anyway, I was wondering how you fine people plan to celebrate the national holiday. Do you make a big deal out of it, or is it a non-issue to you? I moved away a year after unification, so I've never had an opportunity to spend a Unity Day in Germany. I was wondering if other Germans make as big a deal out of it as my family does.

    Glücklich Tag der Einheit!

As far as I am concerned I don't celebrate this day, but take it to relax and think a bit about the unity come true and we made out of it, if we are now a real united country.

    Thank you, AT_60! :)

(Btw. AT_60 it is Glücklicher Tag der Einheit)

Apart from the stores being closed (they are, aren't they?) and the TV program altered, I don't even notice it

The only thing to celebrate is (WAS ;)) the birthday of a friend, which is Oct. 3rd :p

My father's birthday is also Oct 3, so it's a bigger deal in my family than it is others, I guess. He's always been a patriot, so to have unification on his birthday was quite special to him.

Well, since the stores were closed that day we went to Switzerland to go shopping.

Holiday = just a day off school or whatever. nothing special. Why celebrate?

Interesting. I always thought Germans had more patriotism than that. I know my father and grandparents (who remembered Germany before the war) saw the division as a national embarassment, and were very pleased when the country was reunited.

Certainly is the reunting and the gain of of complet svereignty something great, but nothing to celebrate, but more something to remember, so it never happen again.

And with patriotism in Germany is a difficult matter. A word too much of it and you are Nationalist and someone form yesterday.

    Edit: Typo

like Flo said, there is almost no patriotism in germany. most patriotic germans don´t actually live in germany. they usually moved to other countries (mostly US) and try to keep up german traditions in the country they are now living in.

of course there are some things in germany to be proud of. for example the "wirtschaftswunder" the growth of german economy after the war, how fast germany was back on track. we can be proud to have many good athlets etc. but most germans wouldn´t dare to say "I am proud to be german".

i guess you can describe it as "post-war trauma"

That's exactly what my family did. Except we moved to Canada.

I don't think it's wrong to be proud to be German, though. You can have pride in who you are and what the German people have done without being a Nationalist. The Nazis were very different. They hated. Patriotism is not about hate. It's about love. So, I think anyone who brands a patriotic German as a Nationalist or a Nazi just doesn't understand how these things work.

You are probably right about patriotism, but the war make the us careful, very careful. If I can put it that way, our patriotism has a smaller scale, I for an example, I am proud to come from Cologne and I love my homecity. And I think for Janne is no city as Hamburg.
But I think this is only a small part of the problem.

My aunt and uncle live in Vancouver :D

    Wise Guys

    "Stolz"

I do, actually. I consider the city I live in now to be "Canada's Düsseldorf."

    I don't like Düsseldorf at all! :p
