And about Alien species: I'm quite obsessed with the Cantina scene from ANH. So I'm thinking we take something from there. My suggestions: Givin (the skull guys, good at mathematics), Gotal (only problem is their horns somehow react to electronic devices, so the character will have to wear special headgear to protect them, but that's not uncommon with Gotal characters in the EU) and my personal favorite: Ithorian (the Hammerhead, you remember. They are pretty peaceful, but we could use that. Could be interesting I guess). I like the Togruta and the Weequay too, only problem there is that I've never seen a male Togruta, so the character probably has to be female, and Weequay tend to live in groups. But that could just make it a more interesting character, being out on his own... You know what, we'll just see when we get to that point.

 

Haha... just an update on the whole XO question. I forget about Kendrick Quinn actually holding the position in chapter three or four. I just read it while doing some more editing to Book Three. That would make, like, four or five XOs for TIS in a span of a few months probably.

So, how's everyone doing? Thoughts, ideas, questions? Anybody browse through Book Two? What is the general feel of the story so far for everyone?

 

Just finished reading Book 2. It won't be a problem to knock Kit out and proceed with the Jaren as second-in-command. I think that it makes sense for him to be the XO even later, because odds are he outranks Ken. The ranks were kinda crazy in the original, but unless Ken gets promoted to Captain real quick and Jaren doesn't, Jaren will still outrank him.

I like Book 2 in general. Some of the stuff when the Hawk is having hyperdrive issues is might be a little to technical, but its realistic. I'll probably start working on edits this weekend.

 

I'll try to get in touch with MJEH regarding the homeworlds of her characters so for now let's just table that. For Bullwinkle I rather like both Rekaerts and Atiragram, though I think I'm leaning slightly more towards Atiragram.

I'd completely forgotten about Kendrick acting as XO. And I feel like that's a detail I should have remembered. Unless we're going to promote him and keep him in that position, I think we should just skip over his tenure as XO. I think it would be both confusing and slightly weird to have Kendrick acting as XO for a while and then...he's not XO anymore? I can't really come up with a compelling reason why he would either be removed or step down from the position in favor of someone else. While I'm open to suggestions from more creative minds, if you can come up with some reason that would be both interesting and convincing for him to no longer be XO, my thought right now is just to skip over that detail. Sorry Ken!

I hate to say it, I haven't even touched book 2 yet. I'm about done with my edits for book 1 so I should have those in soon. I'm plugging away as fast as I can, I just don't have as much time to devote right now as I'd like. Hopefully when all this moving stuff is out of the way.

 

In all honesty, I thought about those scenes for weeks, trying to come up with some way that a sabotage of the Hawk could be realistic. When it all came out, I just kinda sat and frowned at what it had become. I had to dump the Talons into trouble and then get them out, and it taxed me a great deal. I think that once it's fleshed out from everyone, it'll become a waaaay better ending. Glad you liked it, though.

Super. She was a kick-butt author, too, so we could definitely use her expertise if she has the time.

Me, too, IA. I'm almost ashamed I didn't recall it, especially having worked with the original text for so long now. His personality and character at this point are too shy and reserved to really make an effective XO, so I'd go with everyone else on this issue and say that we'll just skip over that part. I don't think it's too long before someone else becomes XO, anyway, so we're safe there.

And no one needs to worry about not having read Book Two or anything. I was just asking to see who had browsed it, seeing what everyone thought and such. It's not really been a long while since we passed out the original Book One, so we're in no rush to dive into the next one, yet. Some editors are in different positions than others, so I'll do my best to accomodate each person according to their speed. McClain actually gave me an opening scene for Book Four, which surpasses even me! I'm very pleased at everyone's enthusiasm (not to mention that I don't want to kill it by expecting unrealistic deadlines or holding another person back from doing more), so I'm going to continue to encourage each individual editor to just work when he or she can. No worries about deadlines. We're not even close to releasing a finished Book One.

 

So, we've been busy, have we? Interesting stuff.

I haven't started reading book 2 yet. I've been pretty busy. I'll start tomorrow night and I guess I'll send my edits in by the end of the week. No promises, obviously.

 

Stone, what is a Smiling Shecky Rimshot collection? I began writing the details of the scene where Stone gets that package from Chandrila, and I'd like to continue the saga later by referencing it on occasion, but what in the world is it?

And also, would you like to keep the other details in tact for that scene? Stone's brother has died, sending his lightsaber via the UPS guy? After playing down all the Force fanaticism in the original text, I sort of questioned his brother having a lightsaber. The Jedi Purge being what is was, it's a point that we could tweak a little bit, but I wanted to run it by you first. What do you think?

That's about it for tonight. I paced myself today and got in a good page of writing. I'm sitting on page ninety-eight for Book Three. Time for nighty-night.

The Smiling Shecky collection is a bunch of holos, in whatever format they use. He's a really, really bad comedian, which means of course Stone finds him hysterical. It was also an attempt at in-joke on my part.

As for the delivery scene, I'd say go ahead and leave what you can of the original; I'm gonna do some pretty heavy refinishing work on it, anyway. I think all the explanation behind it was done in out-of-story sources, as well as in the half-formed solo series I was thinking of for him.

I've read Book 2, need to do another read-through, and then I'll start editing; I've got some doozies to put in there. One part I think we should address; every time I read High Council, I think they have some actual governmental authority, like the Provisional Council. I think we should make it clearer that these are just people carving their own little fiefdom in Intelligence; powerful as that might make them, they don't hold sway over the New Republic. Yet.

 

About that Provisional Council idea: They were disbanded in 7 ABY, replaced by the High Council. So when our story takes place (Around 11 ABY right? Correct me if I'm wrong...) there won't be a Provisional Council anymore. I hope I didn't ruin it for you Stone... I'm sorry if I did.

 

Cool. Very good. That explains the holos so I can refer to them later. As for the solo series and stuff you were planning, that definitely explains more, too, so I'll keep everything as is and let you do the magic when you get to it.

Hmmmm... very good. I named it that 'cause it sounded lofty, but if I'm reading correctly, Muis is saying there's already one. Am I correct in that assessment? Remember, I haven't been "into" Star Wars in a few years. I think Episode II killed me or something. Episode III couldn't raise me from the dead. In any case, if the names conflict, it definitely needs to change. If the name is confusing and implies governmental influence, it needs to change to something better. Muse on it and slip it into your edit when you get around to it. I think you'll be able to come up with something waaaay better than I originally did.

Mulder read through the thread and we actually chatted about it for a while last night. He wants to keep the name "Krycek" and thinks that apart from the other references, it can stand alone without alluding to the X-Files too much. While I don't think that "Mulder" or "Scully" could do the same thing, I'm hesitantly agreeing at this point. I had already changed his ship's name to Sixth Extinction as a nod to X-Files, and I'm not sure whether "Krycek" would be too much. What do you folks think?

 

I've been in one of Trika's moods tonight. I took a break from packing boxes to do some edits to book 1 and couldn't stop until I had made it to the end. So I've wrapped up book 1 and emailed it off to Trika for her consideration.

My opinion on the Krycek issue is that, while I think it is still somewhat recognizable, it probably won't pull anyone out of the story like 'Mulder' would. However, I'd definitely recommend changing his first name to something other than Alex.

 

I just got your e-mail, IA, and I must say you did a super job. I just browsed over the edits and am really excited to add them to the master copy. You did a heck of a job! Kudos!

As for Krycek, I originally had his name pop up in Book Two as "Re'deis Scrine," the name that was originally Darth Mulder's from the ancient website that we all attempted to put together back in the day. I think that if we went with "Re'deis Krycek" and only used other X-Files references lightly, it would work well.

Oh, and being in one of my moods is really dangerous, IA. I'd get that checked out immediately.

 

Krycek isn't something that immediately jumped out to me when I first read/wrote for TIS. I guess I was never a huge X-Files fan, but I don't think the last name will distract from our story. Re'deis sounds like a good first name. As for other, more obvious X-Files references, we need to tone them down significantly. But Re'deis Krycek is A-OK with me.

It's almost time to get this thing put on the boards for real. IA sent me his edits and we'll be wrapping things up on Book One soon. Take your time with edits if you're still making them. I'm in no rush. I am going to make another run through it myself just to make sure we didn't miss something, too, so we've got the time.

Meanwhile, the issue needs to be addresses about our hot squadron. Some of the actors and actresses have been discussed and decided before, but those will need to be decided amongst ourselves before the drawings start coming out. Some Talons have never been given actors and actresses, so we'll need to be doing some super awesome research (and drooling) in order to get our hot squadron looking super hot.

I'm going to list the squadron and name the actors that had been decided long ago. Some may have more than one choice. Those will be listed too.

I've been looking through Jedi Academy screenshots that I've randomly taken to see if I have anything that could be used for Karn, when his time comes. I think I have one that I like, but I'm going to think it over.

Aahh yes, the cherished tradition of finding the most famous people we can think of to represent our fanfic characters.

My preference for the various actors is to defer to the original choice, as that's what the character's creator has approved. So let's keep Kevin Ski as he is. The only reason I suggested Summer Glau for Quis is, as I was reading through book 1, the match just jumped out at me. I'm not familiar at all with Holly Marie Combs so Summer Glau's voice just seemed to take over, especially during her genius rants. At the same time I'd hate to usurp Laguna's preference.

I suppose my position is, as a general rule, one of purity so long as it doesn't affect the telling of a coherent story.

Jaren's original actor was George Clooney:

Obviously slightly younger than he's shown there. I think at the start of TIS, Jaren was stated to be in his mid-20's.

I think Ty-Gon originally nominated Clooney and the rest of the squad approved so, for lack of a better idea at the time, I went along with it. Not that I'm dissatisfied with the choice, mind you. Especially towards the end of the story, I think Jaren really grew into the image of Clooney. The only reason I bring this up now is because when I created Jaren and decided that he would be from the planet Kuat, I had envisioned the Kuati as having more of a vaguely asian look. Sort of how all the Imperials in the Original Trilogy were British, it was just something to spice up the race a bit.

Now that we're starting over to a certain extent, I wanted to get everyone else's thoughts on the subject. Do you like Clooney? Can you think of someone who might fit Jaren's image a bit more? I'll admit, I'm still at a bit of a loss for someone really good. The best I've come up with so far is Jet Li, who I think would probably do a good job:
