All right, so I went and looked up a bunch of pictures of Donnie Yen, 'cause he's hot, and drooled all over my keyboard, 'cause he's hot. Before the laptop shuts down due my slobber, I'll post a couple other pics that might assist in TEH JAREN KAI.

Just for that, Bullwinkle needs to be portrayed by either Christopher Walken or Will Ferrel.

The other thought I had was a slightly more svelte Philip Seymour Hoffman. If anyone has seen Charlie Wilson's War, he gives a very...interesting performance as a CIA agent planning weapons deals and arguing with Senators. He's very crass and opinionated and, as one might guess, very outspoken. Just something about his character struck me as being interesting as our favorite Drill Sergeant.

Oooooo... good choices. If either of those are to be the actor, though, a good source of inspiration for the acting would be none other than Cousin Eddie from Christmas Vacation.

You know, I really think this is a good option. Bullwinkle obviously can't be in any way HAWT, so I really think is a good option. He needs a scruffy beard though...

And I quite like Donnie Yen as Jaren. I think it'll fit well. I'll have to think about an actor to fit Dos, but that's far from relevant yet.

 

We've got to eventually come up with something for those Talons who never got actors and actresses. And although I'm hesitant to keep adding the Firefly crew to the roster, it was a good place to start.

And, in a sad, but ironic twist, I had actually thought about suggesting Heath Ledger for someone in the future. It's just gone all over the news, though... he's been found dead in his apartment today.

On second thought, maybe finding an actor who resembles me might be a better idea. Russell Crowe doesn't look anything like me.

And since it's all going to be drawn, putting a face to a scene or an action should be easy. Jet Li just seems a little too... Jet Li. I don't know. But an artist could put another face to a cool scene and make it all work out.

IA, let's muse on the extra Jaren/Telia drama.

I was waiting at my coffeeshop today, watching for a fellow classmate to show up so I could tutor her and save her from the evils of physics and calculus, when I started thinking about the reasons behind Telia's anger. Here's what shows in Book One:

Hmmmm... I'm thinking that Jaren and Telia were under some sort of pressure from their previous squadron to perform better. Maybe before they topped the kill charts? Maybe they were going to be replaced? Now, the pressure maybe caused Jaren to do some extra training, choose some specific event to go to or something... in any case, Jaren probably missed a date, birthdate, anniversary... something that would really mean something to the wimins, you know?

What do you think? I just wanted to get some ideas flowing. The way you write for Jaren and Telia, though, you're definitely going to come up with something super sweet!

Just musing. Gotta go battle the evils of programming.

 

Well, my initial thought is that something happens to shake them up. Maybe a team member dies during a mission or J/T have a close call where one or both of them are injured. They're young and inexperienced, and it's enough already that they have to risk not only their own lives but each others' lives. This puts even more stress not only on J/T but on the squad as a whole.

Perhaps Telia made a mistake or simply didn't act fast enough to prevent whatever goes wrong. Being the newest member of the squad, the others aren't as close to her as they were to the deceased and so some of them have hard feelings for Telia. This naturally puts Jaren right in the middle of a tough spot. This part is a little iffy to me. Maybe it's too much.

Either way, both of them react badly to what's happened. Telia lashes out as Jaren withdraws. As a result, neither of them are able to, or even know how to give the other the support they need.

In the end, I think Jaren is the one to call it quits. He says it's for the good of squad, that their tension is negatively affecting their mission performance. Or perhaps the squad itself is disbanded. Telia, on the other hand, still wants to make things work and as a result she feels like he's giving up on them and on her. I think this is where a lot of her resentment comes from.

 

Hmmm... I like the idea of Telia making a mistake, especially since she has also said in the book, "Does it always have to be my fault?" In order to invoke the wrath of the squadron, though, she would have had to do something to kill someone. I can't see everyone getting that upset over anything else, like costing them time, resources, or money. I can see Jaren definitely saying something regretable like, "We wouldn't even be in this situation if you hadn't _________..." or "We wouldn't even be talking about this if _______ was still alive..." Telia would definitely react to that, and Jaren's withdrawing from the relationship is the most obvious move.

I think Jaren should call it quits instead of the squad disbanding. At that point, he's definitely putting the job above their relationship, which would only add to the resentment.

Having a Telia-only scene might do the first book some good. Maybe she would be thinking (more like fuming) in her room right after the kitchen duty scene... there's the kitchen duty scene, Kendrick at the firing range, and then chapter four of the book. Maybe just before chapter four. I don't know... seems like a decent spot. Let me know when you start writing... I'm excited to see what you come up with.
