[TECH] How can mods find out if a user has a sock ?

By leaving trojan horses and key-loggers on each of our computers when we sign up. Check the Terms of Service. It's all in there.

 

Two ways.

Firstly, we can perform IP checks. Everyone's IP addess is logged when they log in, and the system tracks that. So we can check to see what users were most recently at a given IP.

Secondly, Administators can check private e-mail addresses and passwords if they suspect one user is the sock of another.

It isn't hard for mods to figure out who socks do belong to if they know what they're looking for.

 

Correct, most of the time it is fairly easy to do. And the best part about it is, it only takes a moment to do the check.

 

By matching the name in permanent marker on the bottom of the sock to the tag in your underwear.

What if the user uses a different computer to post as a sock? They'll have different IPs.

 

It depends too if the computers are hooked up to the same network, because if they are, then the IP will be almost identical. I'm not too familiar with networks and all that good stuff...so I'll shut up now. I don't wanna make a fool out of myself.

 

While your IP address changes everytime you log in on a different machine/host, each post registers the IP address from which it was created from.

Not in my experience. In fact, it's good to leave the user's socks unbanned so they can PM a Mod and get clarification as to why they were banned.

But users aren't allowed to post with a sock while banned. If they do, then the ban on their regular name is increased.

from my experience yes

 

If you only use the one computer, and you're not on dialup then it's highly likely all your socks will be caught up in the banned usernames IP ban.

That is, no posts are allowed from a particular IP address, and if your, ahem, "little brother", gets IP banned and you use the same computer, chances are that you won't be able to use your username either while the IP ban is in place.
