Oh yeah, I forgot he was in MI:III. In that one he mounts Tom Cruise and then gets rammed to death by incoming traffic.

I didn't see it, but didn't it have @duende's favourite Jeremy Renner in it?

Mission Impossible 3's high point is Hoffman being the only character that isn't an action figure. That movie is a mess, and his performance is one of the few redeeming features it has.

After being constantly reminded of movies he was in, both acclaimed movies and popular movies, that I'd forgotten about, I just went to IMDB.

Here's what I pulled out of his filmography as being notable:

    Leap of Faith
    Scent of a Woman
    Nobody's Fool
    Twister
    Boogie Nights
    The Big Lebowski
    Happiness
    Patch Adams
    Magnolia
    The Talented Mr. Ripley
    State & Main
    Almost Famous
    Punch-Drunk Love
    Red Dragon
    25th Hour
    Cold Mountain
    Empire Falls
    Capote
    Mission: Impossible III
    The Savages
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
    Charlie Wilson's War
    Doubt
    The Ides of March
    Moneyball
    The Master
    A Late Quartet
    The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

I mean, Jesus. They run the gamut from astoundingly great classics to godawful; from art-house films to mass-market blockbusters; from tiny roles to star turns; but of the ones I've actually seen, I haven't seen a bad performance from him. In the bad films, he was the best thing in them; well, that was often true of the good films too. But those are the ones that I've seen or are notable for whatever reason or that I want to see. That's a lot. Twenty-eight out of sixty-three. That's not a bad run.

    from the dead pool thread
Almost Famous is one of my favorite films, packed with great performances, but he absolutely owns every scene he's in.

How could you have missed "The Boat That Rocked"? :( He was great in it, and it was such a fun film.

I almost put The Boat that Rocked on there, but it seemed that it didn't get very good reviews and about the only time I hear anybody bring it up is when they're trying to convince someone that no, Love Actually wasn't the last movie Curtis directed prior to About Time. I didn't see it.

The Boat That Rocked is one of my favourite movies (objectively :p ). It's light years ahead of About Time, which is confused at best. You have to like Richard Curtis movies, sure, but TBTR is one that doesn't simply fall back on "love is great". Love is great, of course... but it's so refreshing to see Curtis painting his world onto a broader canvas. Magnificent ensemble cast, so many story lines (none of which feel compressed) - funny, tragic, moving, silly - and most of all it's a fantastic tribute to the music, fashions and competing attitudes of the 1960s (such a watershed decade). It's a terrible shame that no Beatles music was included in the film. I guess that was a rights issue, but the film does pay homage to the band in one of the best. deleted scenes. evar. :D

PSH was also very good in Charlie Wilson's War and deserved the nomination for supporting actor. It wouldn't have been that watchable a movie without him.
