there's a link to a big data and methodology file at the bottom of the page, if you really want to know.

David Cameron apparently got into hot water when he described Nigeria and Afghanistan as "fantastically corrupt." According to the map. Nigeria is only corrupt. Afghanistan is fantastically corrupt.

I'm half surprised it's not Worcester, AKA "Wustah". Also poor New Hampshire. :p

As you've probably already guessed, one of the best reasons for overdosing on drugs is that you live in eastern Kentucky.

What does "American" mean here? Are Kentuckians and the like unwilling to admit their own ethnic heritage?

That was posted a few years ago too. It's from the 2000 census, since the 2010 census didn't ask for ethnicity I think.

"American" is just people who hate the idea of Hyphenated Americans. You can see it's mostly Appalachia, so they're likely Scots-Irish or English.

Also, America had huge German immigration waves in the 1800's, and a lot of them are the ones who travelled west, like Laura Ingalls and Little House on the Prairie. It's so many generations ago it no longer means anything. And a lot of those counties are sparsely-populated.

How come Austria is not included in the German group? Hindi and Urdu are the same language being called different things for political reasons, and should not be counted separately. Similarly, Tajikistan is not included in Persian, but should be. Tajiki is really Persian, but is called Tajiki for political reasons because it became a satellite republic of the USSR. Turkish should include Azerbaijan. Even though Azerbaijani Turkish is called Azeri, again, for political reasons, these two are really dialects of the same language and are mutually intelligible to a much greater degree than the dialects of Arabic that are all grouped together as one. A Moroccan Arab, for instance, will have a very hard time understanding a Levantine Arab if they speak in their regional dialects. They have to switch to Standard Arabic to understand each other. These are only the nitpicks I thought of. I'm sure there must be many others to find for pedants out there. :p

Well, each language has the +, so it's likely those countries' populations were probably just overshadowed by others, and lumped under the +.

I thought Urdu, while based on Hindi, was also blended with Arabic?

Hindi and Urdu were the same language before the partition. Colloquial Hindi already had a lot of Arabic (via Persian) and Persian loanwords due to the northern subcontinent being ruled for a long time by Persianised Mongol dynasties. After the partition, the two nations, in an effort to set themselves apart from each other, undertook artificial steps to separate their languages. Formal Hindi reintroduced a lot of archaic vocabulary or in other cases simply reclaimed words from the extinct Sanskrit language to purify it of foreign influence. Formal Urdu went the other way and cranked up Arabic and Persian loanwords to 11. But the way normal people speak is basically more or less the same across the border. Neither formal Hindi nor formal Urdu are the way people actually speak.

Here's a very informative video on it:

A Long time ago was Lords of the Middle Sea

". . . that above the drowned lands, the Middle Sea as is known to men, or else as the Shroud. It buoys we of the Salvar, its issue strengthens our bellies, it alike washes storm womb and the ashy roots of the Forges, it salutes the steaming Godwall and the last island Wardom before the Greater Sea, it guards us well from the lost lands where iron walked . . ."

"In the year 2401, players will guide the fortunes of nations as the Emperor of the Nahuas, the President of Mexico, the First Rider of TransWyoming, or as the Fisher of Wardoms -- The Lords of the Middle Sea."
