The mirroring is one of my favorite things about the films, even when some mirrored images come from films I'm not necessarily crazy about. I just really like seeing how different directors, and in some cases the same director in different decades with different resources, create similar shots and visuals in different ways or with different pieces, or both. Sometimes the difference is down to nothing more than lighting, the use of colors, or rusty technology compared to shiny tech, but I just love seeing it.

Kind of an "inside joke", in ANH the Millenium Falcon is tractor beamed into the Deathstar.

Here, you can see the 2 different styles in film.

Lucas is best at still shots, paintings if you will but TFA isn't as good with this.

JJ, is much better with motion. Still Frames aren't as good but putting them in motion will give off the emotion.

Yeah, I'd broadly agree with this. I think there are many shots from the first third of TFA that work great as "cinematic paintings" so to speak, but after that Abrams' signature propensity for hyperkinetic intensity kicks in, in terms of framing, blocking, and camera movement. Which I like, though. It's different than what Lucas went for, but it's a style I think Abrams pulls off very well, and it makes his films feel distinctive even when there's a lot of borrowing going on narratively or aesthetically. I got back a few hours ago from seeing TFA at my student theater, and many of the visuals that continue to take my breath away in motion don't have that same impact on me as a single-frame still image, as they're so dependent on movement to evoke a reaction. Inversely, there are various shots and sequences from the PT that don't do anything for me in motion, because I'll find them to be too cluttered or whatever, but I'll look at them as still images and want to frame them and hang them on my wall.

I think the OT is a happy medium between the two. The technology wasn't there to allow the frame to be so full of moving things that in motion it sometimes got to be a bit too much, but as a still it's gorgeous, or to be shot so frenetically that in motion it's exhilarating, but as a still it's less visually impactful. With the OT, I feel the images are (generally speaking) hugely impactful one way or the other. This is all just my subjective reaction, of course; I understand some people feel differently, perhaps even oppositely. What really excites me is we're going to be seeing so many different directorial styles going forward, so there's hopefully going to be a bit of something for everyone. It's one of the reasons I'm hugely supportive of the "one director, one movie" method we've seen utilized so far.

Same here. I like all of the films for different reasons, the only one I seem to have any considerable problems with is AOTC, but curiously it has some of the most extensive mirroring. That keeps it interesting at least, and I do see it's other strong points thanks to avid fans of the film on these forums. It's a weird film, seemingly intentionally.

Good points. TFA was pretty exciting visually I found, but you're right, it holds much more depth in motion. Revenge of the Sith particularly has such rich momentary images, it helps sell that a once peaceful Republic is burning out. I'm no film buff technically speaking, but hearing that Lucas just crams as much material into a frame as possible reads really narrow-minded to me.

    Thanx, good idea.

    Some dialogue mirrors:

    ROTS
OBI-WAN: It was said that you would destroy the Sith not join them! Bring balance to the force... not leave it in darkness!
    TFA
“Without the Jedi there can be no balance in the force.”

    ANH
HAN: Boring conversation anyway... Luke we’re gonna have company!
    TFA
    POE: We're gonna have company.

    ANH
LEIA: Darth Vader, only you could be so bold. The Imperial Senate will not sit still for this, when they hear you've attacked a diplomatic...
TFA (Poe, Leia's best pilot, is interrogated by Kylo Ren in order to find out where he hid the map to Skywalker)
POE: The resistance will not be intimidated by you.

    ANH
LEIA: Governor Tarkin, I should have expected to see you holding Vader's leash. I recognised your foul stench when I was brought on board.
    TFA
POE: So who talks first, you talk first?
    ...
POE: Kind of hard to understand you with all that... aparatus...

    ANH
VADER: Where are those transmissions? What have you done with those plans?
    ...
VADER: Don’t act so surprised your highness, you weren't on any mercy mission this time. Several transmissions were beamed to this ship by Rebel spies, I want to know what happened to the plans they sent you.
    TFA
KYLO: You know what I’ve come for.
    ...
KYLO: And now you’re going to give it to the First Order.

Leia resists the mind probe / Kylo successfully reads Poe's mind about BB8.

Artoo won't tell Luke about his classified mission.
    /
Rey makes fun of BB8 for saying his origins are classified.

Kylo Ren senses it is Finn who is the treasonous Stormtrooper
    /
Vader displays similar clairvoyance in the OT - "That's it. The Rebels are there!"

The First Order suspects Poe and Finn have gone back down to Jakku for the droid.
    /
Vader suspects the escape pod that went down to Tatooine has the plans.

“Perhaps leader Snoke should consider using a Clone army.”
Clones don’t question killing Jedi during Order 66, Finn being recruited (from natural birth) objects to what the First Order is doing and joins the Resistance.

“Careful Ren, that your personal interests do not interfere with orders from leader Snoke.”
Ren wants the map retrieved intact because of personal motivation to hunt down Luke Skywalker.
    /
Vader sacrifices much time, effort and Imperial lives to find Luke Skywalker. Including lying to Sidious about knowing of Luke's existence.

    On the Millennium Falcon...
    REY: That’s garbage!
    /
LUKE: What a piece of junk!

    TPM
ANAKIN: How did you end up out here in the Outer rim?
    ANH
LUKE: If there is a bright centre to the universe you’re on the planet it’s farthest from.

    Tele-kenetic saber grabs...

Obi-Wan becomes a Jedi by defeating Maul by force-pulling his defeated Master's saber to him.

Obi-Wan hands Anakin's saber down to Luke.

Luke had learned the faster force saber-grab over the course of ESB and ROTJ.
    [IMG][IMG][IMG]
Luke loses the saber when Vader dismembers him, and essentially loses his belief that his father died a good man.

In ROTJ Luke force-pulls his saber to him to attempts to kill The Emperor and Vader stops him.
He only truly qualifies as a Jedi when he throws the self-made saber away and refuses to kill Vader.

    More dialogue links...

After ROTJ Leia and Han split up, Leia continues to fight for freedom (through the New Republic and the Resistance), Han goes back to smuggling.

    ANH
“Jabba's through with you. He has no time for smugglers who drop their shipments at the first sign of an Imperial cruiser.”
HAN: "Hey, even I get boarded sometimes."
    TFA
"The question is how much longer will we know each other? Not long. We want our money back now."
HAN: "Ya think hunting Rathtars is cheap? I spent that money."

    ANH
"Jabba’s put a price on your head so large every bounty hunter in the galaxy will be looking for you."
    TFA
    “You’re a dead man Solo.”

    ANH
"You can tell that to Jabba."
    TFA
"You can tell that to Kanjaclub!"

    ANH
VADER: "I want every inch of this ship checked."
    TFA
    “Search the freighter.”

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    ANH
LUKE (eager): “You know of the Rebellion against the Empire?”
    TFA
REY (smiling): "I've never met a Resistance fighter before."

    ANH
LUKE: “It’s all such a long way from here.”
    ...
HAN: ”Besides, going up against that thing is not what I'd call courage. More like suicide.”
    TFA
FINN: “There is no fight against the First Order. Not one we can win.”

    ROTS
PADME: “Come away with me, help us raise our child, leave everything behind while we still can!”
    ROTJ
    LUKE: "Come with me.”
VADER: “You don’t know the power of the dark side. I must obey my Master.”
    TFA
FINN: "You don’t know the First Order like I do. We all need to run!" ... “Come with me."
    ...
HAN (to Kylo): “Leave here with me, come home. We miss you.”

    ROTJ
LUKE: “I’m a Jedi, like my father before me."
    TFA
MAZ: "It was Luke’s and his father’s before him.”
    ...
KYLO: “That lightsaber... it belongs to me!”

    ESB
YODA: “Life creates it, makes it grow. It’s energy surrounds us.”
    TFA
MAZ: "It moves through and surrounds every living thing.”

    ESB
VADER: “Join me and together we will bring order to the galaxy.”
    TFA
HUX: “A regime that acquiesces to disorder.”

HUX: “In a system far from here the Republic lies to the galaxy while secretly supporting the loathsome resistance.” (Before destroying the system.)
Similarly Alderaan secretly supports the Rebellion in ANH and it is destroyed because it is Leia's home-world.

    ROTJ
VADER: “It is the only way you can save your friends.”
    TFA
KYLO: “You mean the murderers, traitors and thieves you call friends? You’ll be relieved to hear I have no idea.”

    ROTJ
PALPATINE (indicating Luke's saber): "You want this..."
    TFA
KYLO: “You still want to kill me.”
REY: “That’s what happens when you’re hunted by a creature in a mask.”

    TPM
SEBULBA: If you weren't a slave I'd squash you know.
ANAKIN: “Yeah it’d be a pity if you had to pay for me!”
    ANH
HAN: “Travelling through hyperspace 'aint like dusting crops kid."
    TFA
    KYLO: You. A scavenger?

    ESB
C-3PO: “Artoo’s scanners cannot detect any trace of Master Luke.”
    TFA
C-3PO: “We simply do not have enough information to locate Master Luke.”

    ROTJ
HAN: "I got an idea!” (to make an Imperial trooper ask for support and open the doors to the Shield generator.)
FINN: “I got an idea!” (to ask Phasma to power down SK base.)

The Star-Killer base's destruction combines ANH and ROTJ; X-wings attacking externally, explosive charges internally to weaken the base, and flying into a super-structure - in this case a planet.

    Oh, wow!!!!

    Great work, HevyDevy!

And PymParticles, for inspiring HD, good on ya!

I guess I should acquire TFA in disc form on the 18th.

Some of these are actually pretty darn nice.

I really like these last few posted: the ROTJ and TFA star-sucking "Death Stars", the Millennium Falcon "escaping the Death Star" trilogy, and the poetic blue/red rhyme between the tiger-like figures Rey and Maul!

TFA may be a bit more visually acute than some of my recent detraction has allowed for. I still prefer George's beast of a saga, but you've got something here, HD. Good to see these collations. Nice thread.

Boy, this...this was tougher then even I thought it would be. So much of The Force Awakens is just plain unremarkable to look at. Far more stills than not from the movie are, in large accumulations, cluttered, clunky, murky, boxy, uncomposed and, above all, blurred. Now, I get the arguments that Abrams' frames are better appreciated in motion; to a degree, sure. I'd say they're only every lastingly functional in that regard, and have since reviewed elsewhere that his camerawork all too often comes off overexcited without ever really articulating anything more than the same couple three phrases in pans and blocking. There are some fine moments of course, both energized and staid, and the movie is not without a portion of impressive canvas imagery. I'd say most of the conscious mirroring attempted by Abrams is better in concept than execution, but even to that extent there is nonetheless some nod-worthy material. I don't know if any of the following tracks but, for my part, I always enjoy playing match-maker. Also bear in mind, I've only seen the movie twice.
