Are there any "NEW" movies coming out?

I want to see original stuff, like Star Wars was in 1976. And how Alien was in the 80s and Jurassic Park in the 90s.

Most of the material you talk about is either a remake, a version there-of, a sequel or prequel, a cartoon character movie or old book story from way back.

    Hardly anything "ORIGINAL".

Matrix was a super-dooper version of Tron. Lord of the Ring is an old story we all read as kids (hardly original). And E.T. was everybody's childhood dream, so not considered as original.

Please help us set the record straight and give us something we don't already know. I am not criticising your efforts as I have enjoyed reading some of it and appreciate your enthusiasm.

Keep up the fantastic research going.

    • Kill Bill Vol 2: The official teaser trailer isn't out yet, but the Japanese Kill Bill site has released a teaser for Vol 2 in Flash format here. It only works with Flash 7. Also, Thurman mentioned during an interview that it's (U.S) release might be put back from February to April 2004.

    • MS Licenses FAT: Microsoft is planning a new royalty-based licensing plan for its patented technologies, including the File Allocation Table (FAT) file system. The linux community claims that this is yet another attempt to cripple linux, which uses the FAT file system. At the very least, the new licensing policy would require linux developers to pay royalties to MS, allowing MS to profit from its competition.

    • MS Penny Black Project: MS has come up with a new method of stopping spam: making email harder to send. Specifically, MS is proposing a new protocol that requires 10-20 seconds of computer time for sending each email. This reduces the number of emails that bulk mailers can send each day, and making it more costly to send each one. But is anyone going to put up with sending times of 10-20s per email?

    • Penthouse Goes Bust (ahem): General Media Inc., publisher of Penthouse, has filed for bankruptcy, but hopes that creditors will be able to salvage the company. They cite the internet as a major cause of lost revenue.

    • Flight of the Phoenix: Hugh Laurie (BlackAdder) has been added to the cast of FOTP, playing a corporate exec who goes insane.

    • RIP: Wah Ming Chang: Academy Award winning artist passed away at age 86. Among his many many achievements, Chang developed posable models of Bambi and Pinocchio for animators of the Disney films, designed costumes for The King and I (with Yul Brenner), created masks for Planet of the Apes, as well as creating creatures on The Outer Limits & Star Trek. He won his Oscar for his work on The Time Machine.

We have kids too (seven and five).

If you recommend Peter Pan (did someone say there where sex scenes in it?) than we will be there.

Movies are the best things during the holidays. We will be there.

Thanks for the recom. Pity they are too young to see Return of the King.

No, there are no sex scenes in Peter Pan.
The "sex" thing came from a christian family morals group that claims it gives children a "graphic sex education."

However, they appear to be the only family group that has any objections to the film. Other family groups have endorsed the film.

    • Returns of the King: ROTK has grossed $992m worldwide. Based on US box office grosses (no idea why they don't use international grosses, I guess only US money counts), ROTK ($341m) is #7 on the all time Top Films list, just above LOTR:TT ($340m) and below Jurassic Park ($357m). It only needs to make another $120m to reach number #2, which is currently held by SW:ANH ($461m). But to knock Titanic out of the #1 spot, it needs to gross $600m in the US ... Of course, it's already half way there after just 12 days, so who knows ...

    • Bridget Jones 2: For anyone interested, a few scoop shots of BJ2 (due out next Xmas) are up at a Dutch site here.

    • Benji: there is a new Benji movie- Benji Returns: From Rags to Riches - and you can have a look at the OS here. It concerns me that I don't think this Benji looks like the old Benji...

    • Batman: *Minor Spoilers* the production will include 2 weeks in Iceland to shoot a fight between The Bat & a top henchman. The film is also described as a cross between Batman: Year One, and Batman: Year Two.

    • Iron Man: According to Empire magazine, Tom Cruise is interested in playing the latest Marvel comic icon to hit the big screen: Iron Man. Nicolas Cage is also supposedly interested (but he's been linked to just about every superhero film in the last ten years).

    • Dr Sued Over Autograph: the estate of the late George Harrison (he of a little group called The Beatles) is suing a Dr who forced Harrison to sign a guitar and cards while Harrison was hospitalised two weeks before his death from cancer. The suit claims that Harrison resisted the request, but was coerced and forced to sign against his wishes, and that it caused great discomfort. The estate is seeking possession of the guitar and cards.

Joss Whedon has been rumoured as an Xmen writer forever. i think its more fan speculation than anything.

As long as they dont give it to chuck Austen (Shudder)

edit: Well, just to make me look like an idiot: Joss Whedon Starts his run in just over a year, with Cassidy on art. beforehis run we have a three issue Austen arc (ugh...), then 6 issues of Gaiman and 6 of Milligan. Almost makes me want to buy Xmen again.

    Almost.

    • DePalma's Black Dahlia: Brian DePalma is adapting the Black Dahlia, the first novel by James Elroy (LA Confidential), about two cops investigating the death of an aspiring actress - based loosely on the unsolved murder of Elroy's mother. Stars Mark Wahlberg and Josh Hartnett.

    • Vin Diesel is ... The Pacifier!: Diesel's next film is a "family fun" comedy, in which he plays an undercover agent that becomes a babysitter for the kids of the man he failed to protect...

    • The Libertine: Before Johnny Depp does Willy Wonka & the next Pirates, he will star in Libertine, a biopic about John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester, who was a poet, liar, thief, and socialite in 17th Century England. Will also star John Malkovich & Samantha Morton.

    • Salem's Lot: look out for the mini-series of Stephen King's Salem's Lot, filmed right here in Oz last year, starring Rob Lowe, Donald Sutherland, Rutger Hauer, James Cromwell, Samantha Mathis, Andre Braugher, and Rebecca Gibney. It's a two parter, spanning 4 hours. More info and a few pics over here

    • Captain Viggo: Viggo Mortensen is rumoured to take up the role of Alatriste Capitain, in a film based on the famour Spanish novels "El Capitán Alatriste" set in the 16th Century - think of a Spanish Master & Commander, except this film will cover the entire series.

    • Mr Voldemort: Rowan Atkinson's agent has put to bed all rumours of him playing Lord Voldemort in the HP films: "There's no truth whatsoever that Rowan will be in the next Harry Potter movie"

    • Emperor Paddy: Heat magazine reports that the studio folks are unhappy with Colin Farrel's accent in the epic Alexander: "He sounds like a Dublin bus driver."

    • Shaun of the Dead: As if there weren't enough zombie movies popping up lately, there's now a pythonesque zombie comedy from British company Working Title films. Check out the trailer (swf?) here

    • Loch Yer Doors!: There's a new monster movie in the works: NESS. Based on the up-coming book by Steve Alton (MEG), with a $100m budget and David Foster (The Thing) as producer, and directed by newbie Greg Stechman, who says: "The book will be released very soon. I have read it -- it is sick ... David Foster is one of the biggest producers in Hollywood and he's going to make this thing one hell of a show."

    • Ocean's 12 Script Review: Latino review has got their hands on a copy of the O12 script and posted a review. They have apparently managed to avoid major spoilers, but if you're totally spoiler free, best left alone: here WARNING: MAY CONTAIN TRACES OF SPOILERS.

    • Mozart and the Whale: (hopefully) an interesting new film starring Rachel Weisz and Josh Hartnett, about two people who suffer from Asperger's syndrome (a form of autism) - Hartnett is a math savant, and Weisz is a music savant - who fall in love, but are unable to relate to each other. The fact that the director is Petter Naess, whose movie ELLING got a 2001 Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Film, and is being written by Ronald Bass (SNOW FALLING ON CEDARS) gives me hope that it will be more Rain Man than The Other Sister.

    • Samwise Directs FF?: rumour is that Sean Astin is in the running to direct Fantastic Four. If you're wondering why, it's apparently because of his efforts directing the short film The Long And Short Of It, included on the LOTR dvd.

    • More SW?: If you haven't heard, there are rumblings about that there might - just MIGHT - be another Star Wars trilogy (Episodes 7-9) after all ... Now I'm as doubtful as the next person, but these rumblings do at least have some substance. For example, recently there were reports that Peter Mayhew had a clause in his contract for E3 that he would be available for another SW trilogy in the future. Big dose of salts time, sure, but some straws to clutch at ... you can the story over at AICN **FOUL-MOUTHED AMERICANS LANGUAGE WARNING** here

    • Superman Does Sydney: Producting of Superman 5 is scheduled to being at Fox Studios in Sydney, some time shortly after April this year. Locations around Sydney will also be used for Metropolis scenes. Still no word on a cast yet, although Selma Blair seems to think she's in. The only name officially in place so far is Mark Mansbridge, art director, whose portfolio includes Matrix 2 & 3, and Master & Commander.

    • Van Helsing 0: VAN HELSING: The London Assignment, will be released on dvd in the US four days after the film begins. It's a 30 minute animated prequel featuring the voice of Hugh Jackman.

    • Eurotrip: The Official Porn Site?: the official site for the new 'teen comedy' movie Eurotrip is open, and it is possibly the first official mainstream film site to contain r-rated clips. It's another faux-commercial site, this one based on a luxury resort that features in the film. [I'm gonna take a wild stab in the dark and guess I can't link to an r-rated website here...]

His next few projects are writing The Ring 2, Chocolate and Blood (based on Annette Curtis Klause's teen horror novel about modern day werewolves), and finally The Talisman, based on the King/Straub bestseller, being produced by Steven Spielberg (and planned for production this year).

    • Britney Spears: after her critically acclaimed performance in Crossroads, rumour is that Britney will be back on our screens in 2005! Yes, it's gonna be a big year! Star Wars Episode 3, Indy 4, AND a new Britney Spears movie!! Rumour is she will star in Tim Allen's IN THE PINK, about a CEO who loses his job and is forced to become a door-to-door cosmetics salesman (not again!). Can't hardly wait!

The movie features Jim Carrey, Kirsten Dunst, Kate Winslet, Elijah Wood, etc...

    • Scorsese Does Frankenstein: here's a weird idea. Martin Scorsese and Tony Krantz (24) are going to produce a weekly tv series based on Frankenstein. What's more, horror novelist Dean Koontz will write the scripts, and Marcus Nispel (Texas Chainsaw Massacre) will direct. Koontz has already written the 2-hour pilot, and there will be at least four more episodes before the network decides whether its a keeper. The only problem: it's set in contemporary Seattle, and features the good Dr and his monster, who have been kept alive for 200 years ...

    • Dustin Hoffman is Mr Focker: Dustin Hoffman has just signed on to play Ben Stiller's father in Meet the Fockers, the sequel to Meet The Parents. Stiller is hoping to convince Barbara Streisand to play his mom.

    • Hitchikers, Actually: two stars of LOVE, ACTUALLY have joined the cast of Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy: The Movie. Martin Freeman (John the body-double in Love Actually, and Tim in The Office) has been cast as Arthur Dent, while Bill Nighy (Billy Mack, the 'singer' in Love, Actually) has been cast as Slartibartfast. Already cast is Stephen Moore, who will provide the voice of Marvin the paranoid android - reprising his role from the mini-series.

    • Batman: rumour has it that Lawrence Fishburne is up for the "small but pivotal" role of Lucius Fox in Nolan's Batman. Even if he doesn't make it, the cast and crew is certainly coming along nicely.

    • Frankenstein: Not the Scorsese tv-series, but what looks like a cable tv-movie, with a reasonable little cast: William Hurt, Donald Sutherland, and Luke Goss as the monster ... does that name sound familiar? Maybe because he was in Blade II? Nope. Here's a hint: "When ... will I ... will I be famous!?" Frankenstein's monster is none other than half of the 80s supergroup BROS.
