The Five Suicides (as I have just now decided to call them) are:
    • Sisters

    • He Never Died

    • Extraction

    • Mojin: The Lost Legend

    • Son of Saul

Those last two are limited releases and none of them would position itself as a competitor.

You just watch Sisters go and turn into a Mamma Mia.

Well it does have one key advantage over that Abba-based success,

It opens this weekend, but I'm hoping In the Heart of the Sea joins the ranks of my favorite cannibalism movies: Alive and Ravenous.

Maybe the genre is more about tales of being creative with food. In that case I'd add The Martian to the list and The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover.

People who didn't buy their tickets in advance to go see Star Wars to learn it is sold out while waiting in line might choose Sisters instead of "just going home".

Or they might buy Star Wars tickets for another day and then go home.

Yeah, but it's an R-rated comedy which is clearly intended as an "alternative" or whatever, probably based on some misconceptions about TFA's broad cross-demographic appeal, so I wonder how effective at picking up leftovers it would actually be.

    What, no Cannibal Holocaust?

Cannibal Holocaust is a different order of entertainment that transcends genre.

The counter programming releases will likely do ok- there will be people either not interested in SW or not seeing it during opening weekend. So the comedies and smaller films will do decently (on a relative scale) against SW.

But what is okay? I think second place that weekend will make less than 10% of TFA's gross.

It's the height of stupidity that an article which contains the quote "this film in uncharted territory, literally uncharted territory" is also trying to predict a number.

Thanks for making me dumber, Al.

Given the respective takes of Jurassic World and In The Heart of the Sea, I'd love to be at the Howard Christmas table this year. amirite Jabbadabbado ?

I'm seriously too afraid to google star wars now, have TFA projections come in yet, are they getting higher?

I've finally worked out an algorithm for The Force Awakens' box office gross. It has to do with the full moon falling on Christmas day for the first time since 1977.

Well so much for my "what if it's a blizzard?!" doomsaying when the December release date was announced affecting the total box office haul, it's been unseasonably warm in North America this time of year. It is the Will of the Force to drive a giant horde of viewers to the box office.

Though only about 50-60 of that is estimated for opening weekend. That's still more than double the previous presale champ, TDKR.

Estimates are still in the 180-220 range- but there's really no way they can possibly make an accurate weekend prediction until Friday or Saturday's numbers are in.

Colorado got some snow! But it's been a rainy heatwave in Chicago most of the month.
