Pets will hold well but I think early tracking was around 60 for GB. Pets is going to burn off a lot of business during the weekday now that schools are fully out and we're past the holiday.

cause it's edgy and self-aware and irreverent and we've never seen anything like it before except for Deadpool and to a lesser extent Ant-Man and Ghost Rider and Robert Downey Jr's portrayal of Iron Man and also Jack Nicholson's take on the Joker and Tim Burton's whole conception of Gotham

I think Ben Hur will be the biggest hit of August.

GBATC took in 17.2 on Friday, aiming for a $46m weekend. It'll be the top opening for both Feig & McCarthy. Though Pets is still expected to take the top slot.

Was off by 10 million re. Secret Life of Pets but Ghostbusters ended up in that 45-50 million range I picked. Horray for guessing somewhat accurately!

    http://collider.com/weekend-box-office-ghostbusters/

Rank Title Weekend Gross Total Gross
    1. The Secret Life of Pets $50,560,000 $203,147,865
    2. Ghostbusters $46,000,000 $46,000,000
    3. The Legend of Tarzan $11,120,000 $103,050,257
    4. Finding Dory $11,040,000 $445,504,450
    5. Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates $7,500,000 $31,323,716
    6. The Purge: Election Year $6,080,000 $71,001,660
    7. Central Intelligence $5,300,000 $117,508,303
    8. The Infiltrator $5,287,124 $6,749,973
    9. The BFG $3,747,000 $47,336,611
    10. Independence Day: Resurgence $3,450,000 $98,5

I think bad news for GB and, to a lesser extent, Pets next weekend with the one-two punch of Star Trek Beyond (FX spectacle audience) and Ice Age Part 75 (animated family movie) probably hacking into the top two audience share

Ice Age is probably bad news for Pets (or vice versa) but Bourne & Trek will gobble up spectacle and drama- however that leaves comedy and female audience targeting content open as counter programming. GBATC will be fifth (unless Pets totally crushes Ice Age) but it might still do ok.

Ice Age should crush Secret Life and Dory outside the US. It may even do Zootipia numbers abroad.

Bad Moms out next weekend, that's a huge draw for female and comedy demographic and Ghostbusters by the 29th will be 2 weeks old. I think GB is on target to play less than a female skewing comedy and more like a standard FX epic which would mean probably 20 mil next weekend at at 10 mil the next. I'd guess the movie makes about 95 million in North America by the end of it's run.

Jungle Book is the only big 2016 movie I've seen in theaters so far. However, I would like to see the new horror movie remake of "Darkness Falls" opening this Friday.

Light Out is an effective little horror movie, though predictable and a remake of "Darkness Falls". With a production budget of less than $5 million, it's going to make $23-24 million this weekend.

    STB: 59.6
    Pets: 29.3
    GBATC: 21.6 (tie)
    Lights Out: 21.6 (tie)
    Ice Age: 21.0

Sixth time the top 5 films have ever all grossed over $20 million, and the first time that scenario has included a film grossing over $46.

STB is probably going to end up with $30-40 million less than STID (itself performing less than ST09) domestically but is performing between STID & ST09 internationally (where STID outperformed ST09).

GBATC had a higher-than usual drop for a Feig film.

Finding Dory has become #9 on the top domestic all-time list. Ice Age got crushed by Pets & Dory domestically (21 is less than half of what the last Ice Age opened to) but has done very well overseas- the franchise is now the top grossing animated franchise worldwide.

barring some kind of global pandemic in December that kills everyone before they can get to the movie, it looks like Rogue One is going to hand Disney the lock for the top three, maybe top four highest grossing movies worldwide in 2016. It's hard to imagine anything else making it on the list at this point.

    Suicide Squad? meh.

MATT DAMON 5 made about 60 million this weekend. That's a pretty good opening compared to the other MATT DAMON'S, right? It's a better opening than Legacy. As bad as the movie potentially is (I haven't seen it yet) it shows the franchise still has some gas left.

It is interesting that Damon is one of the few movie star actors that can still open a film with his name (not every film but many, like Bourne & Martian).

I think he would have to be Nathan's great great great ... great great grandfather. It's set in ancient China during the days when China built the Great Wall to protect their homeland from giant green lizard men.
