So, here are the final numbers domestically. Let's just say, Walt's doing okay...

    1) Finding Dory ($486,295,561)
    2) Rogue One ($408,164,705)
    3) Captain America: Civil War ($408,084,349)
    4) The Secret Life of Pets ($368,384,330)
    5) The Jungle Book ($364,001,123)

    Some editorializing...

    • Disney took 6 of the top 10, and another one (tangentially) via Marvel owning Deadpool as well.
    • A Harry Potter film finished out of the top-5 for the first time since Prisoner of Azkaban and out of the top-10 for the first time ever (Fantastic Beasts finishing at #11).
    • There is a market for original, non-sequel animation... but not stop-motion. Zootopia and The Secret Life of Pets took in $1.8bn worldwide between the two of them, whilst Kubo took in $69mm worldwide on a $60mm budget.
    • Warner Brothers had a lackluster year, with Batman v. Superman and Suicide Squad finishing #8 and #9 and Fantastic Beasts finishing #11. They all made money and "were profitable" -- but for the franchises they were built on... man, that's disappointing.
    • Star Trek and Jason Bourne franchises may be dead, though more likely in the former (2x budget) than the latter (still sort of 3x budget, but well-underperforming the last movies).
    • Ghostbusters was a flop, and Central Intelligence was a big hit, despite making the same money -- CI cost 1/3 of the budget to make. Also, the latter was much funnier (except for every time Kate McKinnon was on-screen in Ghostbusters).

It'll be interesting to see if any of those slots shift significantly by time the late-year releases finish their runs. Rogue One could very likely be on top by then.

I forget, why don't we include what a 2016 movie makes in 2017 as part of the 2016 domestic? It kind of handicaps the december releases.

This may be the only place that happens.

BOM does include them, but we've typically taken to doing just the actual year. TFA actually almost beat JW in 2015 just in the two weeks it was out, but it didn't but is still considered #1 for that year.

Also, there's a decent shot Rogue One surpasses Finding Dory's totals. I would be extremely surprised if it surpassed FD's foreign totals though...

Nah, though that is an interesting question!

Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens made $284,692,821 in 2016 so that would put it in 10th place if we included movies released in 2015!

Nah, we typically do movies released in one year for the duration of their year. So TFA was 2015 (and actually almost beat Jurassic World in just two weeks -- was like $600,000 short).

That basically means we don't count a movie's run in the year after release, which is kind of not accurate.

There's a difference between a 9 to 5 workday and a 3 pm to 12 am workday, and I think it'd be pretty fair for us to start questioning if the latter started.

The way we track stuff in this thread should make some kind of sense. This one doesn't in my opinion.

So, despite an underwhelming opening in China, Rogue one has passed the Secret Life of Pets on the 2016 Worldwide Take List, giving Disney/BV the top five grossing movies of 2016, officially*.

    All hail our mouse overlord!

*for those who use sensible measures for this sort of thing. Meaning, not so much this thread, and especially not dp4m

In normal ways of measuring movie box office success ( :p ) , Rogue One is now the number 1 movie of 2016, domestic.

With good material, Michael Pena is hilarious. Too bad he's in that.
