90% of The Force Awakens (in the U.S.) coming out of the weekend is an extraordinary achievement. I didn't know what to expect, thought we discussed the possibility that it would get close. Star Wars fatigue seemed possible with 3 back-to-back December openings and another anthology film a mere months away, allegedly.

Also there's a huge argument now (mostly among disgruntled fans) about whether general moviegoers actually like the new movie (prequel rage redux) and how well it will hold up over the holidays. Sheer opening weekend momentum will carry it to a minimum of $600 million in the U.S., even if it collapses from terrible word of mouth. I suspect that's not going to happen. Many people have not seen the movie yet, so second weekend will be huge. The fact that it made so much money opening weekend is fully incorporated into the marketing pitch for general audiences over the holidays. Everyone who hasn't seen the movie knows it's an event film, and they will see it even if their fanboy acquaintance or relative says it's a mess.

Also those fanboy relatives are an angry, vocal minority. The cinemascore, which is the only verifiable audience score, is an A. This movie outside of reddit and this thread has positive word of mouth.

I'm kinda stunned Jumanji made that much. Never underestimate the power of Karen Gillian in short shorts!

The Last Jedi has an A cinemascore. People don't hate him or the movie.

You lot spend too much time on the internet reading internet comments.

I think this is a premature and sort of weird argument to have at this point. Neither box office nor immediate audience reaction are going to be that telling. X3: The Last Stand had a very positive initial reaction, and is still the second highest grossing film in the entire franchise. Despite that, it's almost universally acknowledged as the worst or second worst of those films ever made.

Let's instead just root our personal like or dislike of the film in what we in particular thought about it, rather than trying to make some broad appeal to THE FREE MARKET to validate ourselves.

yeah uhm 777 million worldwide in about a week and a half I don't think anyone is complaining.

Last Jedi will, at the very least, make over a billion dollars worldwide, boo-hoo. Lets say 1.3 is the roof. I think Disney will dry their eyes on all of those cheques from 4 billion dollars from Star Wars in only 3 years. Hell, that's their initial investment in only 3 movies. And, as Yogurt said

Where the real money from the movie is made!

...I mean we are in the Box Office thread, so it stands to reason that the arguments in this thread will be about broad appeal and the free market.
