But I'm sure that we'll only hear the naysayers wailing and gnashing their teeth about the Iranian citizens we released in exchange...

I spent time over the weekend listening to NPR interviews of Trump supporters, including people who claimed to have voted for President Obama's first term.

It really grates to hear people describe how the president has driven a wedge between the races and tried to make white people "feel ashamed of being white." What grates is that they never ever ever "describe" it.

Not once over the president's two terms in office have I heard a detailed example of how the president has accomplished this feat of forcing white people to react with increasing racism and race identity. One policy. One pronouncement. One single moment over his entire presidency when he has been a divider, not a uniter.

I think I have the answer: by being "black, Kenyan and Muslim" he has caused "true Americans" to speak up in defense of this country's "values." Then when you have "black thugs" a/k/a BLM a/k/a black citizens protest against injustice and police to "fear for their lives" - you've got the recipe.

/obvious disclaimer, this post is not serious

I enjoy listening to President Obama speak. Although it is true that I voted for him in 2008 and for Jill Stein in 2012, I would have voted for Obama had I lived in a swing state. I appreciate Obama's social views. I like his opposition to guns and his support for women's rights. Plus, I'm sure it would be a heck of a lot more fun to socialize with President Obama and his family than with certain other former presidents' families. But that's just me.

Yet another reason why it's vital a Democrat win the White House this fall.

Imagine two more Alito's on the Court. That's what a GOP victory would mean.

Agreed. With the stakes so high, can we afford to run a candidate that can't even pull away from an opponent that doesn't even make negative attacks against her?

Don't you worry that Bernie Sanders might try to bring an end to Obama's illegal drone warfare campaign?

    @Jabba-wocky--

That's one way of looking at it.

Another is can we afford to nominate a candidate who might inspire more people to vote against him based on fear of what he represents than for him based on his ideals?

Remember, the GOP hasn't started in on him yet, and he's not exactly perceived as strong when it comes to foreign policy. Income inequality is a strong message, but he still has yet to prove that he's more than a one-trick pony.

No, but the Clinton campaign has, in terms that are just as dire. It hasn't dented his support among independents. Nor am I really clear who would motivate them more than Hillary Clinton, who they already consider socialist anyway. Your foreign policy point is alright, but I don't see where the rest holds water.

Rylo Ken, no because Obama was smart enough not to oppose free trade. Sanders, like Trump, has this kind of strangely outdated and modestly useless view of economic nationalism which will be fantastic at creating inflationary pressure like nothing before it.

Obama said he would renegotiate NAFTA to get a better deal, when he was running in the primaries.

Yeah, I find it hard to believe that someone who is saying that literally none of the US government's free trade deals negotiated over a 20+ year period (and one presumes, longer, since FTA with Canada was almost certainly included in Sanders' list, as NAFTA superseded this) are good would suddenly be in favor of another agreement the US government would negotiate. He would have direct control over the USTR, but not Congress.

Conservative David Brooks on how he'll miss Obama:

    http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/david-brooks-i-will-miss-barack-obama

    It has begun.

Just wait. In 2-4 years, lots of Republicans will be mourning the loss of the "good old days" of Obama's presidency, and how they wish more Democrats would be as friendly, reasonable, graceful, and open-minded as him. "That's a Democrat we could work with," they'll say. Just wait.

Watching four Republicans on Meet the Press. Kasich, Trump and Rubio really, really do not want Obama to appoint anyone, and are twisting policy rules however they can to support their positions-but at least they are actually referencing existing policy.

    Cruz is just being hysterical.

I think that just underlines how important this is, and how impactful it would be if Obama succeeds.

I wonder which Republican senators would be open to an Obama appointee... quite a few are up for elections in blue states this year.
