This thread is for 3D artists to come and ask questions, share experience, and help each other in creating stunning 3D artwork. If you have any questions about how to start in 3D art then ask here. If you've discovered something that you think lots of other people will find useful then share it here.

However, this thread is ONLY for stills and static renders only. All questions concerning animated and animated renders need to go to the Fan Films, Fan Audio & Scifi 3D Forum. Not only is that the correct forum for those question but they'll actually know what they're talking about.

Another thing that needs to be pointed out is the legal side of things. There are many sources of legally free content out there. Not all of that content is great but there are some gems. While it's ok to ask for help finding legally free content, you should never ask for help in getting commercial content for free. That's illegal.

As this is a resource thread, we need some resources. I have a few but more will be added. Just PM me links or post them here and I'll add them when I can.

    Software:
    DAZ|Studio*
    Blender (free)
    G-Max game modeller (free)

    Content:
    DAZ 3D*
Renderosity (free and paid for content)

I will keep updating this, so don't worry about there being not much right now.

*Just a note about DAZ Studio. The Pro version of Daz Studio 4.6 is currently free, Bryce 7 for landscapes and Hexagon for models are cheap (less than $20 each), and Carrera 8 Pro is $285. The weekly freebies are now free with any other purchase.

    G'day Moosemousse

I'm not familiar with the Daz program as all of my models are made with Autodesks 3D Studio Max. But thanks for the info ;)

Well, I'm trying to get as much as possible into this thread, so if you have anything at all that's 3D art related I'd be grateful if you could PM me links. :)

Well I don't know of any legal ( or illegal ways :D ) to download 3D Studio Max but you can download it's little brother G Max which is an older version of 3D Studio max which was made for game designers. Although it looks like you've already got this one up on your first post here. :)

Reopened this thread for continued use.

With regards to which 3D software I use, I am currently using Maya 2013 edition.

I've not used Maya before. I've recently upgraded to Daz 4.6 Pro as it's free right now. I'm trying to work out how to make objects glow but not having much luck with that. I'll update the opening post with new links tomorrow. If anyone has anything I should add then just send it in a PM and I'll add it.

I have updated the the opening post with the correct link for Fan Films and I've added some notes about DAZ. Hopefully that's all good. I'm still looking to make objects glow in DAZ 4.6 though, so if anyone can help, that'd be cool. ;)
