ABC is saying that the Sepratists have claimed found the plane's black boxes and are going to turn them over to the Russian government for investigation.

 

I'm starting to worry that this tragedy may become politicized.

 

As everyone knows, and Australia is entirely populated with criminals, and criminals are used to having people not trust them.

The chances of it not being politicized are somewhere between zero and nil.

It's looking like the Donbass Separatists misidentified it as a Ukrainian air force An-26 and took it down with high altitude BuK SAMs they captured recently from the Ukrainian military.

While it may be accidental, it will be played as wanton mass murder and terrorism by the US-led west, because that suits their politics at present.

I think the TL;DR of it is:
- Do not fly over Crimea (and the Black and Azov Seas) (yes I checked the coordinates)
- The rest of Ukraine might be dangerous, take appropriate security measures.

 

Yes. Mass murder (or ordinary murder for that matter) requires malicious intent to kill innocent people.

Combatants in an active civil war, attacking what they believed to be an enemy military aircraft, but getting an airliner by mistake, falls under the general "war is hell" bracket. Many a FUBAR thing happens as a result of mistaken identify in the fog of war.

The US Navy shot down an Iranian civilian airliner in 1988 and killed almost exactly the same number of people as were killed in this tragedy. It was a cluster****. They thought it was an Iranian F-14 attacking them. The crew was exonerated by a US military investigation.

I'm sure plenty of Iranians thought it was mass murder, but the facts don't fit that analysis.

 

Could it more likely be that Malaysia Air just sucks at keeping their 777's airworthy and Ukraine and Russia are both just attempting to use this crash as political capital?

 

Except the U.S. never took responsibility or admitted fault for the accident. That was pretty *****y.

Anyway, whoever shot the plane down did so mistaking it for a military aircraft. But really, war is just organized mass murder.

They suck at keeping their planes out of warzones, certainly. Next time one's going to land in Aleppo.

 

It going down on it's own is possible. At this point I'd accept Ukraine shooting it down accidentally, the separatists shooting it down accidentally, Russia shooting it down as part of a scheme to blame it on the Ukrainians while taking the secret codes from the us satellite being transported on the Malaysian jet to then launch a surprise invasion of the entire east coast of the US followed by a series of wmd attacks across Europe before launching a massive blitzkrieg invasion.
