ST The Aliens of TFA discussion thread

i loved the movie....but one little niggle...no aliens from the previous 6 movies...would have been nice to see a creature from the prequels or someone from the famous cantina scene in ep4....its like Disney want ownership of everything....including planets....shame

 

Ackbar, Chewie and Nien. All alien characters from previous movies, all present.

The Force Awakens features several appearances by previously seen aliens, with a whole host of new species.

You know, exactly like The Phantom Menace and Return of the Jedi.

 

The only scenes with old aliens were during the Senate scenes weren't they?

 

And lots of Tatooine scenes. Tusken, Jawas, Twi'leks (Bib) Hutts (Jabba, Gardulla), Quarren

etc.

 

I had forgotten about that.

 

I'm not sure if Tikkes was only in the Senate scene, or if he was on Tatooine as well - but some Quarren was.

 

We see Mon Cal, Wookie, and Sullustan in the film for sure.

Did my eyes play tricks on me or was there a Stennes and Arcona too?

 

When Luke is on Bespin I think the two sides of the environment match his story. Early on his in the "light" environment that's almost like a fantasy castle and he's still playing the classic hero from ANH taking pot shots at the troopers and trying to save Leia(match by Williams score). When he(and not R2) gets shut into the "dark" environment I think it clearly signals a shift away from this, his story then undermines the classic heroes fantasy as he faces a more extreme test than he imaged that he isn't equipped to deal with, only to potentially survive.

Really besides a handful of characters the aliens in the OT are mostly about selling a location/atmosphere and in TFA I think the only location that's used as effective is the junk yard on Jakku, giving us a sense of Rey living in the shadow of the history of the OT.

 

stennes? if that's this dude then yes. unless it's not supposed to be the same? btw do we ever get to see the dog-thing in the film?

 

I've looked and looked, and sadly, I think he was cut. As was that short alien with the long trunk wrapped over his shoulder, who was my favorite in the bunch.

I really like the design of the Tarsunts.

 

Me too. Can't go wrong by mixing a manatee, a buffalo and a human.

 

I would like to see some more "familiar" SW aliens in Episode 8. I think there will definitely be some in Rogue One.

Man. I wish they'd left in the shot of the short "trunked" alien with the six-eyed dog.

 

I would have loved to have seen the dog and a close-up of that smoking alien.

 

Eh, I dunno, I'm fine with that dog being cut out. Looks too rubbery to me.

 

I think they did a great job with the aliens and creatures. We were introduced to new planets so we needed new creatures. It's a galaxy with a lot of planets and different species. I'm sure Rogue One will throw in something we all recognise.

 

There were not many memorable aliens in TFA but the Tarsunt design is so damn awesome.
