When everything becomes nothing, when life as we know it ends, only then will the true adventure begin.

    -Unknown Prophet, 1158 A.D.

The Altar of Naught: World of Oblivion

"Ah, once again, once again. A new batch. It has been a while, wouldn't you say?"

"When you've done what I've done for all of these years, you tend to lose track of time. Therefore, I cannot perceive what it is you speak of."

"Well, it has been years. We've waited a lot longer between experiments than usual."

"Do you consider this case usual? If so, I would advise you to check into a medical facility at once."

"Relax, chump. Just get on with it will ya? I'm tired of waiting."

"Patience is the companion of wisdom. I thought you'd learn that by now."

"Don't you ever get tired of rhetoric?"

    "Initiate."

    -------------------------------------

    Los Angeles, California
    July 17th, 2013
    1700 Hours

The streets of Los Angeles were once again busier than usual. Cars sat before lampposts in front of lines that were miles in length. Engines were shut off to conserve gasoline, children were getting cranky and impatient, and students on school buses were late for dinner, not to mention their favorite television show. No one knew why the streetlights had suddenly stopped working, especially in this time of day. Five o? clock traffic wasn?t pleasant in usual circumstances, but this was a nightmare. Horns filled the air, people yelling at cars in front of them, sometimes irreverently. Police cars with their sirens blaring struggled to squeeze through the interminable lines, but before they could, people began filing out of their vehicles. At first, it appeared as if a brawl was waiting to occur, but then it became clear that there was another motive for this.

All eyes were focused on the distant horizon, eyes wide open and jaws dropped. Something large, grey, and slightly transparent was sweeping through the world from the east, as far as the eye could see, like a prodigious tidal wave. The people began to panic, frantically crawling inside their vehicles for protection.

The wave rapidly got closer, and soon, it was sweeping over Los Angeles. People ducked inside their cars, closed their eyes and covered their heads. There was a raucous sound that sounded like a fantasy monster?s roar, and then, all was silent.

There, in the wave?s wake, was an endless stretch of flat grey land. No vehicles, no buildings, and no people save for a single child, no older than three years of age. Tears streamed from her eyes as she looked upon the aftermath of the wave in fear, her teddy bear gone along with her family. And then, to her surprise, a beautiful and hypnotizing pink portal appeared before her, swirling slowly, beckoning her to enter. The crying stopped, and she instantly crawled toward it. When she came within inches, she was sucked in to a destination unknown.

The real truth was that his father never picked up his daughter from the hospital that day as he and Justin, the young boy not knowing what was happening, boarded a plane destined for the land Down Under only hours later.

His father and he grew quite close over the years. The only thing closer to Justin is his dog, a beautiful golden retriever?beautiful only if she was washed, that is. Sadly, that's not usually the case. Her name is Sister.

Throughout his life Justin has received regular neck massages. The chiropractor thinks that his young muscles were strained because he was always looking up as a toddler. Even to this day, young Justin loves looking up at the sky. His eyes still go wide when clouds shift positions.

Justin is still in high school. He was cuddled up in his bed with Sister when he had the strangest dream.

The eldest son of a middle-class family, Lane displayed a keen mind and predisposition to being something of a teacher and guide to others, placing the needs of those around him before his own. He studied hard and graduated early, gaining a degree in sociology. Seeking to be of use to his community, Lane applied to the police force, where he excelled in his application by the age of 22.

Lane's career in the police took him to Japan, where part of his heritage was from in an "officer exchange" programe for one year. As well as learning about the Japanese culture and gaining skills from their sharpest inspectors, Lane was trained in several forms of unarmed and armed combat; as part of his graduation, he was gifted a ceremonial Japanese katana sword as a mark of respect. During his time in Japan, Lane met an American girl his age named Julia Fellows who was in Japan briefly after visiting Europe. Lane and Fellows were smitten, and she accompanied him back to New Zealand, where they were married within six months, only to find that Fellows was pregnant with his child.

Lane's son was born when he was 24, and named Ashton. Making their home in New Zealand, Bayden gave up work in the police frontline at 30 to instead become a youth counsellor and reduce the risk he faced daily. When Julia Lane was offered a job in LA in her chosen field of television production/media, she went ahead to set up a new life for them and establish them in the city of Burbank. It's been six months since Bayden and Ashton have seen Julia, during which time the marriage become somewhat strained. The day the world changes is the day that Bayden and Ash arrive in LA.

Bayden is something of a worn man, having been separated from his wife for some time, raising his son on his own and dealing with a stressful job. He is however, a man of resource and something of a good leader, quiet, but inspiring. He is known to be blunt but fair, and values his 10 year old son Ash above all else. His goal, as the world suddenly changes around him, is to keep his son safe above all else and help those who need aide.

Zelda Marchand was alone in her room, scribbling down lyrics on a piece of paper for her twin brothers? band. It was a rainy afternoon in Berkley, so there really wasn?t anything else to do but sit inside and work on songs.

She flipped a white bang out of her eyes and looked out of the window. Her eyes widened at what she saw. A huge wave, like a tidal wave, only grey, was headed straight for her house, and was only a quarter of a mile away. She tried to contemplate what it was, but soon after it rumbled through her house, a loud noise filling the air, and then, silence.

Zelda opened her eyes slowly, and found herself standing amongst nothing but grey land. The ground was grey rock, the sky was grey with no sun.

And then, out of nowhere, a pink portal appeared.

Justin Kleegs was sound asleep in his bedroom, his beautiful golden retriever, Sister, slumbering beneath his arm. It had been a long day, and he was outside for most of it. It was a windy day, and he couldn?t help but watch in awe as the clouds moved about in the sky.

He was dreaming about them as well. The clouds were moving as rapidly as he had ever seen them, the white cotton-shaped objects darting every which way against a light blue sky.

He woke up after he heard a noise. He opened the curtain in front of his window as Sister remained asleep, and saw an enormous grey wave heading towards his home. As soon as he could react, the wave engulfed him, and he closed his eyes, scared for Sister. Their was a raucous noise, and then silence. He looked up, and found that he was standing on an endless stretch of grey rock. Their were no clouds, nor a sun in the dull grey sky.

A familiar bark filled the air, and he looked behind him to find Sister. A pink portal appeared in front of them.

Harold Jones had been visiting Los Angeles for a few days now, snapping pictures day in and day out. He was relatively unaccustomed to the warmer climate of the city compared to his hometown of Ottawa, but it was not unbearable.

He had seen many sights over the past few days. But nothing could have prepared him for what he saw now. A huge wave towering over the landscape hurtled towards him, and as soon as he blinked, it had engulfed the entire city in its madness, a loud, raucous roar filling the air. Harold?s eyes were close, and as soon as the noise became a deafening silence, he opened them.

Nothing but grey. Grey skies, grey ground beneath him. And suddenly, a pink portal appeared before him.

Connor Smith shut off the lights of his Kung Fu school, locking the door behind him as he exited the small building. He had just finished teaching a class of hopeful youngsters, all of whom yearn to reach his rank of Sifu one day. It was his job to guide them there.

He was walking to his car in a nearby parking lot when something in the distance caught his eye. Something like a huge grey wave, rapidly growing and approaching him. He looked around quickly, but no one else was there. All the children had left with their parents and friends. By the time he turned back around, the wave had come over him, emitting a disturbing sound throughout the atmosphere.

And then, all was silent. Connor wasn?t where he once was. Instead, he stood among flat grey land beneath a dull grey sky. And then, without warning, a pink portal appeared before him.

Bayden Lane and his ten year-old son, Ashton, exited the car and shut the doors behind them. They had arrived at a local park, with a sidewalk stretching around its perimeter, a couple of swing sets, a playground with two slides and a rock climbing wall, and some benches for parents to sit and watch their children play.

Strange, however, was it to find that no/>/>/>/>/>

    Harry blinked.

The pink portal in front of him glowed with an other-worldly light. Harry thought that other-worldy was more than obvious - pink lights were seen rarely, even in LA.

Any pink light would be ethereal.

Looking into it provided no clues. A portal seemed to be the comic-book explanation, but that just seemed a little...quirky.

Photographing it would be worth a shot. Harry did so, and then realized - video camera. Duh!

He flicked on the video setting, and shot a few seconds of it from different angles. Not that that helped much.

    So, he touched it.

Genesis looked around at her surroundings. This was all way to weird. First the call she had been waiting for forever, than the wave, and now a pink portal looking thing. What was she supposed to do? This just wasn't right. The whole thing seemed to be a joke like they would do on some show like Scare Tactics. Maybe that was it! She was on some stupid television show!

"Hello? Hello? I have it all figured out now! You can come out!"

Genesis waited for someone to appear out of nowhere. Nothing happened.

"Hello? Hel...lo?" Tears had started to well up in her eyes. She was alone;all alone. There was only one thing she could think to do. She had to walk through the portal.

Taking a deep breath, Genesis put one foot into the portal and then her hand and then her body...

Connor blinked and realized that he had slipped into a defensive stance, feeling alittle rediculous he stood up and took in he surroundings. everything was grey and...dead, even the air tasted some how lifeless, it seemed that every direction looked the same. Then a pink portal opened infront of him, Connor silently raised an eyebrow as he studied the object. It seemed this....thing was his only choice, still Connor slipped to the ground and meditated on what had happened trying to find some kind of balance. After awhile he breathed out deeply and stood in one fluid, economical motion, he prepared his mind for what may come and leaped into the portal....what ever was there he would be ready.

    IC as Justin Kleegs:
    Nowhere

    "Eh... Hello?"

    The voice received no response.

    "Dad?"

Justin stood staring at a dog who in turn was staring back at him. Sister's tail was wagging furiously when her eyes finally snapped away from Justin's and looked around with excitement. Justin followed suit and glanced at the bland rock in front of him. He realised that his arm was still frozen in front of him, as if holding the curtains he had been opening only a moment before.

Watching Sister again, he saw her start to sniff the ground and scratch her front paw across the surface. Justin hoped it was solid ground, and bent down himself, feeling the grey rock beneath him. Nothing stirred.

"Hello?" he repeated as he straightened. Justin ran a hand through his dishevelled black hair as he looked up above him. All that greeted him was grey. Only... grey.

As he massaged his neck, a bark suddenly brought him back to reality. He twisted his neck around to see Sister running towards a pink object standing out amidst the lonely land. He briefly wondered why he hadn't spotted it before, but then he realised that he had been too stunned to seriously focus on anything. He hadn't even turned around before.

Surprised by this object, a swirling vortex of pink, Justin watched as Sister slowed down and cautiously approached it. The golden retriever stopped at its feet and took a quick sniff at the bottom of it. Then yelped and ran off.

"Sister!" Justin bounded after her, afraid to lose the only thing left in his reality.

Reasonably athletic, he thought he could catch her quite quickly. But soon he realised that it would take much longer than that.

Sprinting after his beloved dog, a fleeting thought crossed Justin's mind that he shouldn't lose sight of the pink object.

But out of the entire world of grey, he had only one focus. And that was reaching Sister.

He knew without looking that the pink object had now became a distant spec over a kilometer away.

    IC: Bayden Lane, park.

The first thing he realised as he opened his eyes, was that Ash wasn't holding his arm anymore. His stomach spasmed and he opened his mouth involunatrarily, exhaling. Feeling somewhat disorientated, he stood to his full height, tall and imposing, but lean and a tad lanky. A lock of hair fell over his face, coming to rest just below his eyes, and longer as it graduated down to below his collar, chocolate brown tinged with hits of premature grey that made him look older than his thirty-four years, but balanced by the youthful visage he possessed which occassionally made people think he was Ash's big brother than parent. He'd grown his hair from the shaved cut he'd had in his police days, perhaps as a sign he was relaxing somewhat. A rough beard of stubble had grown about his face, and he recalled laughing as his son had told him he reminded him somewhat of the "funny-talking-cheater-guy-who-hoarded-all-the-stuff-from-the-plane" from the tv show about the people on the island who crash landed, the name eluding him.

"Don't worry, Dad. You're more like the good doctor, anyway."

He blinked, forgetting the moment from a few weeks ago. Something had happened, beyond his comprehension and his son was gone. They'd barely been in Burbank for a few days, and hadn't even caught up with Julia yet. Now the world had just gotten a lot weirder, and Bayden didn't like that. He looked around, and adjusted the collar of the grey hooded sweatershirt he wore beneath his black casual blazer, dusted off his faded blue flared jeans and Chuck Taylors before panning around.

That was when he saw the soft hue of the pink circle, pulsating like liquid.

On instinct, his hand went to the comforting weight at the back of his waist; the familiar contoured handle of his weapon came into his hand and he drew it. It had been some years since he had been a cop, but old habits died hard. In truth he'd wondered why he'd kept his weapon after leaving the force, but it had been his ally for the better part of his career. Getting it through customs had been a mission, but at least being a former cop had been enough to sway customs. The gun came into his hand - a simple Glock 9mm; nothing flashy, but Bayden had always been about reliablity over style and the Glock fired everytime, be it underwater, or jammed with sand. And Bayden was not one to take chances, regardless.

Drawing it, but keeping the gun held low, he approached the pink circle, feeling energy ripple around him like static. Had it taken his son? What the hell was it? Either way, if Ash was in there, that was where he was heading....

She stared at the pinkish warp in the air. It was like something from some science Fiction novel. She took off her glasses and shook her head, and wiped her glasses thinking it was a speck.
Upon putting them back on, it was still there. She went closer and pulled a drumstick from her pocket and poked at it. Nothing but air.

After finishing college early, he moved to Barcelona, Spain where an agent of radio had contacted him from. There, he was just getting a studio to begin a worldwide talk show version of "Bird on the Wire."

    But now...everything had changed.

The studio had been chosen for Raymond Owens? new talk show based upon his highly esteemed radio show, ?Bird on the Wire.? He could fill the excitement boiling up in his heart. All those people he could help, all the assistance he could provide.

And then, he saw something in the distance, over the top of the studio. Something like a tidal wave of some sort, only it wasn?t water, but some odd grey substance that he?d never seen before.

It was approaching rapidly, and it soon enveloped him completely. The noise was loud, nigh unbearable, and then came a deafening silence. Where were the screams, the sirens? Raymond looked up, and found? nothing. Grey. Death.

And then, a pink portal appeared before him.

Beads of sweat began to form on Mirra Ulrich?s forehead. Only five more minutes until the concert, and it was her first one since she joined the Kansas City Symphony. She stood outside of the studio, violin in hand.

And then she spotted something far off on the horizon, and it was approaching quickly. A tidal wave? No, not that. It was grey, slightly transparent, nothing like water.

It had overcome the studio, and soon engulfed her own body as a noise reached her ears and it was all she could do not to assume her head was going to crush.

Then all was silent. She stood amongst flat grey land, paired with a dull grey sky. The scent of death lingered in the air. And then, a pink portal appeared before her.

    Unknown place

The emptyness seemed to streach beyond the grey horizon. Was this death? Mirra could sure smell a wreched stench in the dry air that she could only assume was what wrotting flesh smelled like.

Her blue eyes couldn't look away from the pink warp that had appeared in front of her. As she went to strech a boney hand to touch it, the strings on her violin were brushed with her arm and they sounded. The noise was enough to make Mirra vomet. It was then she noticed the compelte and utter silence around her. Shaking, she silenced her violin and touched the pink light with her bow, then pulled it back.

    Nothing.

It was the only thing with any sign of life, if you could call the ever moving pink light that. What was the chances that she just hadn't gone crazy? Or maybe this was a dream brought on by something slipped into her bottle of water.

"Here goes nothing." She said, the words dying amongst the still air. Even speaking hurt her ears.

Gently squeezing her violin, she walked through the pink portal.

    Raymond Owens IC:

Location ~The Land That Once Was

Raymond noticed the tidal wave of an odd gray substance approaching from over the studio. It was...bizarre. And frightening. Normally Raymond J. Owens would have run for his life, possibly even screaming bloody murder, but he was rooted to the spot. The brutal blend of horror and shock taking over his body. Next thing he knew after shaking out the sound of a couple hundred thousand fighter jets passing overhead...Raymond J. Owens was no longer in Barcelona, Spain. For all he knew, he was no longer on Earth.

Raymond blinked a couple of times before looking around him at the complete and utter desolation that lay around him. The Land That Once Was.

    Poetic, Raymond, quite poetic.

Dumb thought, but given the circumstances, Raymond was quite numb and quite plainly in shock. Dumb thoughts come in times such as that. Could of been weirder at least. Maybe something like..."I should have eaten at Joe's." Or maybe, "Did I lock the door?" Or even, "Is my refrigerator running? ...Maybe I should catch it."

Luckily for him it was just poetic words for a very lonely place and it was his own response to it. Suddenly, a pink portal appeared before him. It didn't pop into existance, or bang, boom, or even flash. It was just...there.

Apprehensive, Raymond looked around for a rock or something like one to throw. Nothing. Scared, Raymond then stuck his hand in. Nothing happened, even when he pulled it back two seconds later.

    Nothing happened...couldn't hurt right?

"Wait, no you don't Raymond. Don't know what it is, just leave it alone." Talking to yourself if you had no one else, though seemingly weird if others were around, did help relieve at least a fraction of stress and uncertainty.

Quickly backing up from the pink portal of light, Raymond promptly spun on his heel and marched off. Where? Who knew. He kept up at this for about ten minutes and after it all, everything was the same. The same nothingness.

Raymond turned to see the pink portal still where it was, in fact, it didn't look much further away at all. It was like distance had no meaning in this...this Land That Once Was. It shimmered for a moment, then continued to just be there dully. Raymond continued to ignore it.

Running his hand along his bald head as if he had hair (he did once, but that was a story for another time) and moved in a different direction, away from the portal still. There was no sound as he walked, yet he knew there was some sort of ground. It seemed the portal always remained the same distance to him, yet he felt movement. Was the portal moving? Was he truly moving? Was his mind playing tricks on him? Speaking of mind...did he just lose it? But why would he? Was he crazy if he was actually debating to himself if he was? Or was the self-acknowledgement of the possibility of one's own insanity a testament to denounce and overthrow that idea? Did it support it?

He ran and there was no sound, he breathed and yet felt no air in his lungs; he sniffed but there came no smell. Stopping suddenly, Raymond listened...but there was only the deafening finality of silence and nothing.

Turning to look at the portal once more, he saw its pink light still the same distance from him no matter what he did. His brow furrowed as he stared at it long and hard.

"Alright thing...if I go inside, I better expect some answers on the other side," he let a slow and long breath that was surprisingly agonizing upon its absence of other sounds, "and I don't fully expect to. But what other choice do you give me? If this is death, then at least give me a welcoming party on the other side. I beg of you."

Raymond closed his eyes and though there was no heat, he began to sweat. The situation was frightening and he was feeling it, feeling it to his core. Shaken from all he ever cared about and all he ever loved, Raymond Owens took shaky steps forward.

When he entered, Raymond would be shaken from everything he ever knew. He would be shaken down to the very fabric of hi

?So, do you think they?ll all go for it? I mean, all of them probably think they?re losing their minds right about now, eh??

?The mind is its own place, and in itself, can make heaven of hell, and a hell of heaven.?

?And I?m supposed to know what that means??

?It means that they?ll perceive their situation in what they feel. But what they feel is irrelevant. The wheel of fate has been set in motion.?

?So how long will it take for them to get here through the portal??

?Almost a day. When the humans step through the portal, they?re bodies will disintegrate into molecules, traveling for hours. Once they reach the Altar, they?re bodies will take shape again. It will feel like less than a second for them, but in fact will be just short of a day.?

?Geez, you guys sure are messing with them.?

    ?You have no idea.?

The skies were brightly colored with a beautiful sunset, the sun slowly receding into the horizon. Below it, however, was not such a pleasant sight. A deserted wasteland stood in its wake, all but destroyed buildings crumbling to the rocky earth beneath them.

High into the sky, in the center of the wreckage, stood a large piece of flat rock. For years, it had only been there, a piece of land miraculously floating in the sky, neighboring with the clouds. But it would soon serve a purpose, for the Earthlings would soon appear atop it from the portals. And they would receive a greeting soon after. And thus it would begin.
