Ok, seeing as I'll need some intellectual stimulation over at camp, I'm upping this thread for more questions.

Why did the 'intellectual' part of that sentence disappear when i was reading it...?

And that's not my question. I understand why there's no intellectual stimulation over there... :p

...would the Champ Car World series be more intersting if Sebastian Bourdais and Bruno Junqueira were of different teams?
To me this year it seems to be Paul Tracey vs Newman Hass.

Alrighty, I'm upping this thread again becvause I'm in a position to be able to answer questions again.

For those who don't know, or can't remember the idea behind this thread, just look at the first post.

And keep the questions TOS friendly ;)

There's a joke.. "why is a Raven like a Writing Desk?"

I don't get it! Can you explain this to me?

why is a Raven like a Writing Desk?

First off, the answer to this riddle is "I haven't the slightest idea". The humour is that it's a riddle with no possible answer and that the person who postulated it didn't know the answer. The riddle first appeared in Lewis Carroll's book "Alice in wonderland".

However, this hasn't stopped people attempting to think of an aswer for this. Some popular one's include:
    * Because the notes for which they are noted are not noted for being musical notes. Sam Loyd, 1914
    * Because Poe wrote on both. Sam Loyd, 1914
    * Because there is a B in both and an N in neither. Aldous Huxley, 1928 (if you don't get this answer, PM me and I'll explain it)
    * Because it slopes with a flap. Cyril Pearson, date unknown

However, Lewis Carroll got bugged about this so much that he wrotee the following in the preface to the 1896 edition of his book:

"Enquiries have been so often addressed to me, as to whether any answer to the Hatter's Riddle can be imagined, that I may as well put on record here what seems to me to be a fairly appropriate answer, viz: `Because it can produce a few notes, tho they are very flat; and it is nevar put with the wrong end in front!' This, however, is merely an afterthought; the Riddle, as originally invented, had no answer at all."

The word in italics is another joke by Carroll. If you take that last sentence and re-read it "and it is nevar put with the wrong end in front". In other words, nevar is a palindrome of raven (the wrong end in front).

EDIT: Yes I am once again at a point where I have way too much time on my hands.

    Nope, miley.

Nevar is merely Raven spelled backwards, as a palindrome is a word or phrase that is the same spelt both ways. Example; mum, dad, radar, A Toyota's a Toyota etc.

Really, Rabbit? Let's have a look:

    (Bold emphasis mine)

So, he said "nevar" was a palindrome.

    Which it is not.

A palindrome must the same word or phrase spelt backwards; like SoE said, "racecar", or any of the examples I posted. Since raven/nevar are two utterly different words, it cannot be a palindrome QED.

I'm glad we resolved this highly important issue and were able to whip out our IQs and measure them. I have a question, though: what's the benefit of SDRAM over DDRRAM (or vice versa) and is it even remotely linked to the price difference?

I will admit I used palindrome in an inaccurate situation. I put that in bold due to what I will type next.

The New Oxford Dictionary Website (note: not the actual dictionary, but the website) came to my defense on this one, citing that "the term palindrome is often used (inaccurately) when reffering to a word spelled backwards. We have been asked on numerous occasions if there is a word to describe a word spelled backwords, but unfortunately, we cannot fin any examples of one in common (or uncommon) usage."

But, going back to my original comment "I will admit I used palindrome in an inaccurate situation."

Now that that one is out of the way...

what's the benefit of SDRAM over DDRRAM (or vice versa) and is it even remotely linked to the price difference?

First off, I'll be using DDRSDRAM instead of DDRRAM (explanation to follow):

SDRAM - Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory: a type of DRAM that can run at much higher clock speeds than conventional memory. SDRAM actually synchronizes itself with the CPU's bus and is capable of running at 133 MHz, about three times faster than conventional FPM RAM, and about twice as fast EDO DRAM and BEDO DRAM. SDRAM is replacing EDO DRAM in many newer computers.

DDRSDRAM - Double Data Rate-Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory: a type of SDRAM that supports data transfers on both edges of each clock cycle (the rising and falling edges), effectively doubling the memory chip's data throughput. DDR-SDRAM also consumes less power, which makes it well-suited to notebook computers. DDR-SDRAM is also called SDRAM II. and DDRAM

Theoretically DDR-SDRAM provides double the bandwidth of normal SDRAM. At 100 MHz memory clock it's able to supply a data bandwidth of 1600 MB/s, at 133 MHz it goes up to 2100 MB/s. That is why 'Team DDR' decided to call the specs of those two DDR-memory types 'PC1600' and 'PC2100'. However, I have to disappoint you, if you should think that DDR-SDRAM is simply twice as fast as SDRAM at single data rate. The basic reason is rather simple. While DDR-SDRAM is indeed able to provide double the peak bandwidth of normal SDRAM, it has still the same (CL2 DDR-SDRAM) or even a slightly worse latency (CL 2.5 DDR-SDRAM) than its older sibling. The result is that in worst-case situations DDR-SDRAM can be as slow or even slightly slower than normal SDRAM. At the same time DDR-SDRAM can easily outperform single data rate SDRAM under ideal conditions. In average, systems with DDR-SDRAM are most certainly faster than systems with normal SDRAM, but the gain depends on the application and can hardly ever reach more than 20%.

As for prices, I've seen SDRAM ranging from $60 to $400 (512mb at 133mhz), with DDR-SDRAM at similar ranges.

So, DDR would be better in theory, but it's not linked to the price difference (which to me appears to be based solely on the manufacturer in conjunction with memory sizes)

I can explain this in more detail if you want mate ;)

Are you saying that 512mb RAM costs $400? Or did I read that wrong?

Because I know that you can get 512 pc3200 DDR 400 memory for $75. And at the same store yesterday, there was a sale on which you could get them for only $54.

    *confusion ensues*

I never said how long ago I saw them for that price.

Realistically, if you pay more than $100 for a top of the line stick of 512mb, then you're being ripped off.

Nope, that's cool. I'd heard that DDR was better, but in some places SD was actually more expensive, so I couldn't figure out the reason. Much obliged. ;)

    I have another computer-related question.

Why is the fan in my G5 iMac louder than a death metal concert?

Why is the fan in my G5 iMac louder than a death metal concert?

Almost all cooling fans use ball bearings to allow the blades to spin freely and easily. If they start to wear un evenly or if the blade disc is slightly out of alignment, then a very loud noise results (it is suaully comparable to a hammerdrill being used on masonry).

The easiest solution is to have the fan replaced. There are others, but that's the simplest one.

    Agreed. :)

Here's another question to fill up your boredom: :p

Why did the Titanic collect soooo much money at the box office? (Over $700m higher than the next closest, ROTK, but at its time nearly 1 billion more than the nearest. And for another comparison: If a movie raked in $700m in total for its career, it would have a ranking of 20th on the movie all-time highest world-wide grosses.)

    What happened? [face_thinking] ;)
