I give it roughly five years until a "small" (ish) College program is investigated for rigging prop bets and/or points shaving. And I won't be able to lay any blame on the unpaid student athletes who accept money to make sure a bet pays for off for the deep pocketed bettor.

If anything it's less likely to happen since everything will be now out in the open instead of in shady corners. Besides the "Olympic Model" for college athletes is no longer a question if it will happen but rather when. And quite frankly it is a model that should been implemented decades ago.

 

Couldn't disagree more with that "less likely to happen" take. Look at what happens in soccer around the world, even close to him. Betting is legal and even promoted within the sport. And that emboldens bettors to approach players, especially on smaller clubs or smaller countries, often on games where the result isn't in question, but where a prop bet could pay out. Look at the example of Belize being approached about a Gold Cup game vs the USA. not that anyone betting on the game thought Belize would win, but they wanted to get assurances on other ways to bet on that game. Or an amateur Goal Keeper in a pie-eating bet scandal during Cup Play in England.

Now, ask yourself - if you're the punter at, say, Troy University. And you're playing Alabama. There's no way you're beating Alabama. A week before the game, a bettor asks you to make sure you fake a punt and offers you a thousand dollars to do so. Would you decline that? I probably wouldn't. And that bettor then turns around and places a few bets against the prop "will their be a fake punt ran by Troy vs. Alabama" and makes hundreds of thousands of dollars.

 

isn't it just up to the states now? i'm imagining most will elect to keep it illegal. i'm also kind of confused about how it was legal in nevada before this ruling.

 

I think something like 14 states had preemptive legislation introduced to make it legal, pending the SCOTUS decision.
