I kinda figured this would happen, not like this though.

"Atheist propaganda"? Maybe, kinda, sorta, but is it propaganda if there's truth to what they're saying?

Yeah, I'm not surprised either, and I'm not surprised that some Christian fundamentalists idiots completely missed the point of the Bruno story, which was not to trash religion, but make a point about having an open mind, whether it be to science or faith, as a warning against the dangers of small minded thinking.

I've been looking forward to the right-wing overreaction to Cosmos almost as much as the show itself. Those idiots are highly entertaining.

I can't figure out why anything having to do with Cosmos should be a political issue at all.

I've heard a few reports that a local station in Oklahoma interrupted the show with a local news promo during the evolution segment.

    Conversation Feb 16th:

Nephew: "...and the Moon comes from the Earth."

    Family member: "Huh?"

Me: "The current idea is that the Earth was struck and material blown out from it formed the Moon."

Family member: "Phht, I don't believe that. God made everything and put it there."

    Me and nephew: "..."

Thankfully he is not around this person full time

I am in tears laughing at those tweets. Tears. They read like an Onion article.

And people actually believe this ****. [face_rofl]

My devout-Christian father is the one who introduced me to the original Cosmos in 1980. We both loved it.

First episode was pretty good, having not watched the original Cosmos in it's entirety (only clips here and there), I particularly loved the cosmic calendar idea- brilliant way to visualize things.

I was also surprised that Silvestri is doing the score- definitely going to pick that up at some point.

    So, sort of related...

My kids and I were having a conversation earlier about where the oceans come from and where water itself comes from. My best tired-tonight answer was that hydrogen and oxygen molecules combine. My youngest mentioned the Big Bang and my oldest said something about meteors and ice crashing to Earth.

I haven't watched this yet but I can't wait to show it to them, and talk about humans coming from stardust.

I don't have any kids yet, but if/when I do, and if they ever ask where people come from (in the general sense, not the birds-and-the-bees way) / what they're made of, I'd like to dream it'd be a clear enough night that I can take outside to look through a telescope, ask them what they see and use that to lead into telling them that they are made of the stars themselves.

Failing that opportunity, showing them this series will be a sufficient fallback option. :)

Yeah, obnoxious guy YELLING while wearing an anti-religion t-shirt to provoke people is a terrible counterpoint to display.

What's a rape victim doing in /r/mensrights anyway? I mean, if it wasn't him, it would be one of the other 30,000 subscribers.

    EDIT: Dear God, the sidebar.

I really enjoyed the first episode and am looking forward to watching more of it. I'm glad they're putting it on Hulu so I can watch it on my schedule.

Also, I'm hoping they do more cheesy animated bits, but I'm also hoping their message is a bit less overtly... "Seth MacFarlane" than the Giordano Bruno anecdote was.
