Bay City, MI The Bay City Jedi Draft

well, i said i was gonna do it, then i didn't do it. but now, i'm doing it. this here will be a nice olde fashioned, good thyme jedi draft. actually, it's sort of new fashioned as well. for as you all may be familiar with the usual rules, wang and i have been secretly discussing the ways to make them better. this will be a 12 man draft with teams of 8 each. the catch is, 2 members will remain on the bench for regular matches but the team will be larger. that means you still just submit 6 numbers, even though you'll have a team of 8 players. this way there's a little more thought put into those last picks and more of these unheards and reborns will be used up.

as far as the staff goes so far, i'll be the new commisioneer and taiwo will be judge no. 2. we will of course need a judge no. 3 in the future, but mostly i'm worried about finding players at this juncture. we do have an early sign-up, sasee jiim asked for me to put him on the list since he was having computer problems.

while deliberating the matter with a few of my coleagues i have come to an important decision.
the 12 teams participating will be divided in to two divisions, naturally. but each one will have a seperate pool to draw from. this means that the teams will be more elaborate and it'll keep the final two picks of each team from riding the bench the whole time.

as this is the first draft i've ever run, we may have unusual changes from time to time. but for now, that is all.

 

Oh man, you serious, Maxle? At first I just just thought I was seeing things due to sleep deprivation, but... it's looks like I wasn't.

So, 2 conferences of 6 teams each? Seperate list for each conference? Okay, so that means that, even with the teams being expanded to 8 Jedi or Sith on a squad, only 48 lousy picks are going to be taken? Off of a list that has 132 names on it?

BLEH! I mean... BLARGHH!!

Where's the challenge in that? I mean, damn, we might as well just chop off half the freakin' list, because I can pretty much name off the top 50 Jedi/Sith, and guaranteed, if everyone else did the same, you'd have a bunch of eerily similar lists on your hands (with a few different names here and there, I'm sure.) There would be no point to have the "lesser" dudes on there.

Meh, whatever, that just saps any challenge out of the drafting process, IMO. And besides, having a bunch of stacked teams doesn't seem all that inetersting to me. Yeah, having like a Sidious/Kun/Ulic/Maul/Ventress/whatever/whatever/whatever squad may seem cool at first, but that's just lame to me. They're just a bunch of no-brainer picks. I like seeing the nobodies and the crappy guys getting picked. That's where you separate the contenders from the pretenders.

Again, just... meh.

Pretty much, if you're gonna have a straight-up 12 GM Draft then you ought to keep it to 6 players. Otherwise, you're just gonna end up having two dead weight team members that will ride the bench the entire time with only the possibility of helping you in teams.

The challenge in having separate pools is the entire essence of having an extended 8 players-- yeah, you're picking in the top 50 of Force users to have on your team. Which means you'll have quality guys on your bench, and GM's will have to actually put thought into who they're sitting and who they're starting. And that separates the "contenders from the pretenders" just as much as the 12 GM Draft does through forcing lower picks.

In other words, what I layed out to Maxle last night-- the best would be having either a single pool with 6 players per team, or separate pools per Conference with 8 players per team.

At least, that's my line of thinking at the moment. And I certainly agree that Luke vs. Luke isn't teh cool. Any other ideas?

 

I say don't seperate it. Make it a real challenge to fill your teams cohesively
