Actually, I mentioned Groundhog Day earlier. It actually appears on the 100 Funniest list. I'm listing the films now that were nominated.

I do agree that it's one of the best of the nineties as far as comedy goes. :D

Yeah, I agree on GH Day :D

Grumpy Old Men- well, I've been a big Jack Lemmon fan for a while... I find both these movies pretty funny. Maybe nothing groundbreaking, but enjoyable none the less.

The Green Mile was such a great flim and very sad.

It Almost had me crying which has never happened before.

Personally I don't see what the fuss is about Shawshank Redemption as Green Mile supassed it at every level.

Second choice would Saving Private Ryan the greatest war movie of the 90's by far with only Braveheart (another choice) the only flim coming close.

The way the German soldier hussed the American he stabbed and all the warmth in his eyes while he did it was VERY unique.
It just showed the Germans were not the monsters they were made out to be in WWII, only Hitler and his commanders were.

Thank you all for the comments:

Nominated films, beginning with the letter 'H':

Home Alone--oy, what the heck is this doing here? Really, consider Joe Pesci in the light of Raging Bull and Daniel Stern in the light of City Slickers and Diner and you will literally weep to see them reduced to this travesty.

    House Party--never seen it.

Heat--I must watch this and very soon.

The Hunt for Red October--a classic, no question. Baldwin and Connery are excellent and they get the benefit of a supporting cast consisting James Earl Jones, Sam Neill and Scott Glenn, all of whom are excellent. Very tense, very atmospheric, very well acted. No question, this is a classic.

Henry and June--Never heard of it.

    Hang on . . .

    Got it:

Henry and June--in 1931, Paris, Maria de Mederios meets Henry and June Miller, played by Fred Ward and Uma Thurman. Intrigued by them, she begins expanding her sexual horizons, as June attempts to find work as an actress and Henry authors a biography of his wife, financed by Mederios and her husband.

    Sounds bizarre . . .

    Comments on those films?

Home Alone-- This was hideous. Considering it came from John Hughes, one of the great comedy directors of the 1980s, it is even more of a shock.

    House Party-- Yuck!

Heat-- This i9s a great flick, all the more memorable for ahving the courage to invest in some great writing for characters that are so flashed out that it is akin to watching a real life news event.

The Hunt for Red October-- As far as submarine films go, I like this. Works great in a double bill with Clear and Present Danger. Try it tonight, I recommend it.

Henry and June-- Yuck Mark 2!

Home Alone--ehhh, an OK film to watch with your family at Christmas. That's about it.

    House Party--never seen it.

Heat--I must watch this and very soon as well!

The Hunt for Red October--Well I watched it for Sam Neill ;) Great movie! I haven't seen it in a while, and must watch it again. Probably my favourite submarine movie.

Henry and June--Haven't seen it, but I've heard of it. It was the first film to get the US NC-17 rating. From what I hear, it's really raunchy and I don't wanna see it anyway. I only know about it because, er... Kevin Spacey's in it  Yes, I'm so proud of him [face_plain] .. [face_laugh]

Yes, I was going to ask you if you were aware of Kevin's checkered past. [face_laugh]

So, AL, I'm curious: How raunchy is Henry and June? If it's true what Rachel says about it being the first US film to receive the NC-17 rating, do you agree that it deserved it? Or was it slightly alarmist, much as the first R ratings were, with R ratings being given to everything from Take the Money and Run to (retroactivly) Bonnie and Clyde? Just curious.

RL 1.5- his checkered past? You sure that's all? What year was that movie? I think that was back when he was still doin' drugs...

I heard from reviews that H & J isn't as bad as some R movies today.

Well, I've only seen an edited for t.v. (Bravo) version of Henry & June, disregarding all that may have been censored, it really wasn't too bad on the sexuality. And for those of you who are willing to see around that, I thought it had really nice visuals, stunning in its best moments. I say give it a try, it has a nice cast, a fair script, and beautiful cinematography. It's also a wonderful period of time to tell a story in.

Yeah, but PA... I'd say the non-edited version is REALLY heavy on the sexuality. So I might see it, only if I can see the edited one.

I think this brings up an imporatant question, where do we draw the line between art and porn? Should an inherently pornographic film with a plausible story then be considered "high art"?

Very interesting question and one that I think deserves a huge amount of scrutiny.

I don't like sexuality in film, by and large. I think if the director is trying to be sexy, he's missing the mark by actually showing us sex. The spark comes from a sexual charge on screen, thusly the spark dies when we see the pair actually having sex.

Double Indemnity stands as perhaps the premier example of this, but there are others.

However, sometimes, when sex is shown in an artistic manner, it effects me emotionally, which is what I ask of every film. The shining examples of this are as follows:

The Graduate--it's middle montage of cuts from the pool to the bedroom is beautiful and one could seriously write an essay on the symbolism in that sequence.

Hamlet--Branagh uses flashes of sex scenes very sparingly but effectively during a couple of monologues.

Out of Sight--I love, love, love the bar scene with that gorgeous score that creeps in as we cut back and forth from bar to bedroom.

Blink--very well done sex scenes and inherently painful and condemning of the characters, which is what we're after in this particular work.

It sounds odd to say it, but sex isn't necessary to a sexual atmosphere and often it cheapens the sexual atmosphere of a film.

That said, when it's done right, I have no problems with it and feel that it can be used as an emotional experience and such.

Of course, none of the films I've named were really pornographic and I'll admit that I've never really seen a film I'd call pornographic, though Midnight Cowboy was originally rated X, so perhaps that qualifies.

So, to sum up, should a film with graphic content be considered differently than a film without graphic sexual content?

I say, with much thought, yes, I'm afraid so.

Apparently the director is not confident in his skills and the skills of his actors, writers, score, etc. to tell the story and produce the necessary emotional response, so he feels that he must throw in graphic sex to catch our eye. If he was really talented, he could get every single message across that he wanted to without using graphic sex.

There have been the occasional film that showed me as wrong where sex was presented artistically and emotionally, so the above does not apply as a blanket, but most often that's the way I feel about a film with graphic sexual content when I'm finished with it.

I thought Heat was a very good film. Natalie Portman's role is relatively small, but is crucial to the overall story.

Those are the best films of the 90s?

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

    Og, I'm sorry, but really...

I can understand your beef with all but Titanic, which was, in my view, the best film of the 1990s.

I though Gladiator was one of the best movies of the 90s (2000 does count as the 90s). Some of my other favorites are The Matrix, T2, and Ronin.

I never judge a movie before I see it. But I certainly hope The Matrix sequels will be great :) Loved the first.

KW- Here's my deal with Titanic. It was an incredibly well done historical movie. I still marvel at how Cameron re-created the Titanic and it's atmosphere so well. That, in and of itself, warrants true accomplishment. I even enjoy the charcters in the film, but what turns me off about it is the story. I don't like the love story at all. If we were simply following some of the same characters without this incredibly irrelivent and mushy love story, I would adore the film. I still value it for it's atmosphere, but not it's plot.

RL 1.5... care to go back and find my TUS comments now? :D :D :D

Ok, Im a film nut and saw just about every movie that came out during the 90's and heres my faves in no order:

Natural Born Killers- Probably the most IMPORTANT film of the 90's. I love it.

Schindlers List- What to say about this film other than its a masterpiece and its historical accuracy is beyond compare!

Iron Giant- Best animated film ever made IMHO. I just love this film to death!

Star Wars Phantom Menace- Sorry for the bashers, but this has got to go on here just to have the return of Star Wars in the 90's!

Hard Boiled- John Woo's Hong Kong action masterpiece is likely the best action movie ever made. See it if you havent!

Thelma and Lousie- Ridley Scott: Your the man!

Titanic- Say what you will, a film doesnt make almost $2billion worldwide without being liked. Oh and its a really great film. Great historical accuracy and performances. Big ol fashioned epic!

Titus- Shakespeare done right! See it!

True Romance- My fave romance film ever! Love it! Slater as never been better!

Usual Suspects- Who would have known this would have been as good as it was. Great film.

Pulp Fiction/Jackie Brown- Taratino's two classics. Cant be beat for wonderful real dialogue and smart witty characters.

Sling Blade- Amazing film that not many people saw! See it!

Tarzan (Animated)- One of the best animated films of the 90's.

Shawshank Redemption- Excellent performances, excellent script, excellent direction. Perfection on screen!

    Unforgiven- Eastwood's best!

Clerks/Mallrats/Chasing Amy/Dogma- Kevin Smith knows how to make a good movie. These are testment to that!

Toy Story 1&2- Will go down in history has the first full-length animated film and its actually good. Although TS2 is actually a better movie IMHO.

Silence of the Lambs- Superior thriller with one of the most interesting characters ever to grace the screen, Lecter.

Se7en- What more to say. Its a great movie.

Hook- Brought Peter Pan to a generation that likely wouldnt have known much about Pan otherwise.

Jurassic Park- Marks the first time that CGI has been used for a real living creature and not metal. Oh and its a hell of a ride!

T2- Excellent action and story. Arnold's best!

American Beauty- Will go down as a classic for the ages. So much subtext and wonderful performances.

Fight Club- Clockwork Orange for the 90's.

Saving Private Ryan/Thin Red Line- Im putting these two together cause honestly I cant seperate the two. I love them both equally.

Boogie Nights/Magnolia- PT Anderson knows how to create characters. See these films!

Goodfellas/Bringing out the Dead- Scorcese in top form here.

Godfather Part III- Im gonna get shot for this, but I think its a wonderful film!

    Braveheart- Epic! Epic! Epic!

Leon- Action with a heart, who'd a thought. Jean Reno will forever be remembered as Leon.

JFK- Definately one of the top 10 of the 90's. One of the most finely edited films ever put together!

Iron Monkey/Drunken Master 2- No people, they were made in the 90's and only just released in the US in the past 2 years. Oh yeah and their the best kung-fu flicks ever!

Heat- Pacino/Deniro, whats not to like!

People VS. Larry Flynt- Flynt is one of my heroes! Therefore I love this film!

Pump up the Volume- One of the best teen films ever. Great performances.

Carlitos Way- Pacino and DePalma back together! Whats not to like!

Eyes Wide Shut- Kubrick. Nuff said!
