Yeah, and my dad is the sort of person who gets stuck in his ways. Keeps cursing at the computer as if what's happening is its fault (it's usually not) :p

No, they didn't. It hasn't caught on well, but it is by no standards a failure. They have said nothing of the sort. Windows 8 is a fine operating system, hampered by the dumb idea of making the Metro UI the default UI. If Metro was switchable on/off, it'd be praised as better than 7.

Windows Blue is rumored to enable the start menu again. Once that hits, 99% of the complaints about 8 will be gone.

They did. We studied Windows in Economics. It has underperformed as a business venture.

It may work well, but if they're not selling then it's a failure.

How is that typical me, Ken?

Windows 8 sales have been fine. Lackluster? Maybe. Bad? No.

Eh, my teacher said it was bad for them. Tablets helped, but weren't enough to meet their goals.
He's worked as a head financial advisor at TD, I'm inclined to believe him.

I'm never late for tea. I love my tea time.
I honestly don't remember being late for much here. :p

Unless your teacher also wants to argue that 7 was a failure, he's wrong. He may be a teacher and have experience, but the numbers don't support what he's saying. Numbers don't lie.

I think we're on two separate ideas here.
I'm not comparing to 7, I'm comparing to the overall goals for 8 that were set. Growth, sales, profit.

I'm saying that Windows 8 has been selling at a rate which is at least on par with 7. If we can all agree that 7 was a financial success, than it stands to reason that 8 was one, also.

As for goals set, there is no way to tell what the goals were. Most of that would be internal, not external, and as such can't be proven. What can be proven is that the actual sales figures have been good. The Windows division of Microsoft has a 60% profit margin - that's pretty damn good.

Which is why press releases have been released saying that the sales were subpar.
The business model is evidently different from 7, otherwise there would be no argument here. But as you said, majority of this is internal. We have no way of knowing if they were allotting more money for production or R&D.

Is the margin all Windows products?

Can you link me to the press release where they said it was a failure?

It's the Windows division. That includes Windows, Windows Phone, Surface and maybe Office (although I believe that's a separate division).

I'm sorry, but that article just says that Microsoft will change parts of Windows 8 itself. It makes no reference to Microsoft admitting sales were below par. That's like saying Apple sees the iPhone as a failure because it launched a software update.

There's a link in there. I can't find the exact article on my phone.

All I know is they need to update the software in order to improve sales. Otherwise they wouldn't bother changing as much as they're changing it. Sales were ok, but subpar.

Consumer satisfaction was lower than they wanted too.

Nope. No link that I can see, and I tried every link in the article.

Windows 8.1 will increase sales, but that doesn't mean sales were subpar. It just means they want to reach new markets, such as the 8-inch tablet market (which will see Windows tablets for the first time thanks to 8.1).
