It's funny, I'm actually pretty optimistic. I never thought I'd be actively searching movie blogs for rumors about a new Star Wars film ever again, and yet...here we are.

 

Kasdan is a great choice, for sure. The only logical choice really. I just find it troubling that Arndt walked away at all. I mean, to leave a project of this caliber, voluntarily or otherwise, is a definite sign of turmoil.

 

Don't get me wrong. I'm not one of those people that is damning the movie already. I guess I'm just at that point in life where there are a great many other things that take precedence on my list of priorities. My gut tells me that Episode VII will be a much better film than any of the prequels but it won't approach the original trilogy. Honestly, what can? Memory is a funny thing. The further we get from something, the more we aggrandize it in our mind. The further we get from 1977, the more nostalgia gathers around it, the more the legend grows and becomes untouchable. Directing this is an unenviable position to be in and the result is likely to be polarizing regardless. I think that we will know that we are watching a Star Wars movie, but I think it will be wholly unique in flavor. That would be the smartest approach anyway.

 

Can't say why Arndt left, but I can imagine writing this movie is / was really hard. I honestly have very few ideas on what I would make it about, other than taking some stuff from the EU and Luke being the Ben Kenobi of the sequels. How do you follow a series with such amazing dialog as this? "I wish I could just wish my wishes into a wishing well!" (paraphrased)
