Amph The Box Office Thread

Much hand-wringing in the press recently about the falling off of the Box Office figures this year over last year.

Last week's box office looked like this:

1. Just Like Heaven, $16.4 million
2. The Exorcism of Emily Rose, $14.9 million
3. Lord of War, $9.4 million
4. The 40-Year-Old-Virgin, $6 million
5. Cry Wolf, $4.4 million
6. Transporter 2, $4 million
7. The Constant Gardener, $3.6 million
8. Red Eye, $2.9 million
9. Wedding Crashers, $2.53 million
10. March of the Penguins, $2.52 million

Highest percentage gain: "An Unfinished Life" from #16 to #11 (119 per cent)*

Greatest percentage drop: "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" (49.1 per cent)*

Best Screen average: "Just Like Heaven" ($4,703)*

"The Man" dropped right out of the top 10 in only its second week. Bad news but not unexpected.*

Three of the top ten films have 'legs': "Wedding Crashers"; "The 40 Year Old Virgin" and especially "The March of the Penguins"--it just keeps marching along, and penguins don't have demands or entourages, which means low overhead.

"Just Like Heaven" opened in first place, but 16 million isn't going to cut it, especially as some heavy hitters open next week. This casts some doubt on Reese Witherspoon's ability to open a movie.

"Lord of War" should also have opened better than 9 million. Further erosion of Cage's standing.

"The Exorcism of Emily Rose" fell off badly, which means either it sucks and word of mouth is bad; or the basic audience for horror movie is small; or that it is apparently only partially a horror movie, which may have disappointed the audience.

It appears to be some sort of game, which isn't the intent of this thread...

This week:

1. "Flightplan," $24.6 million. Jodie Foster can still open a movie, which must be good news for her.

2. "Tim Burton's Corpse Bride," $20.1 million. Not at all bad. I expect this one to have legs, and stay open past Halloween.

3. "Just Like Heaven," $9.8 million. Falling quickly.

4. "Roll Bounce," $8 million. Not great, but not bad, especially I suspect the overhead was low.

5. "The Exorcism of Emily Rose," $7.5 million. Falling quickly.

6. "Lord of War," $4.9 million. Ditto.

7. "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," $4.3 million. Hanging on.

8. "The Constant Gardener," $2.2 million. Ditto.

9. "Transporter 2," $2.15 million.

10. "Cry Wolf," $2.1 million.

 

That's surprising, having Flightplan edge out The Corpse Bride. I was pretty certain that it would be reversed.

I seriously thought CB would've taken it. I mean a film like Robots and Shark Tale can pull in good numbers, yet Corpse Bride can't. And CB is a better movie than both combined. Flightplan did what I expected. IMO the two cancelled each other out. CB would have done better if it wasn't for FP and vice versa.

 

I think they knew from the get-go that "The Corpse Bride" was going to be a tough sell. That title. The fact that it isn't really geared to children. That doesn't mean it won't make money. I think it can...anyway, I'm going to see it.

 

Still, the way that a lot of people were talking about it, and from the Flight Plan trailer, it really looked like a reversal.

 

I don't know. The choice of films out right now REALLY sucks. It doesn't appear to get any better for the rest of the year, though there are usually some surprises come Halloween time.

 

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Exhibitor Relations Co. Inc. Final figures will be released Monday.

Best per screen average: "Serenity" ($4,634 per site)

 

I was really surprised again by Flightplan, how that's #1 for a second week, beating out Serenity. I would have thought that Serenity was a sure #1.

 

I'm not surprised about Flightplan. I knew it would do well after seeing the trailer. It's good suspense/action plotline with a very suspensefully oriented actress...Jodie Foster. She's great in just about everything.

 

October 1st to October 8th, 2005:

1. Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, $16.1 million
2. Flightplan, $10.7 million
3. In Her Shoes, $10 million
4. Two For the Money, $8.4 million
5. The Gospel, $8 million

"Flightplan" is still holding on; W & G shows considerable appeal; but I do not understand "Serenity" nose-diving. Not only did it not open well, it has no legs, dammit. Beaten by "The Gospel" and "Waiting"? That's a disaster.

 

I don't understand a lot of it.

I too don't understand the Flightplan appeal. I saw the trailer and laughed, as did others in the theater. I'd say its due to the shift in audiences between summer and fall.

 

Sometimes, you just can't predict it. I would have been willing to bet "Serenity" would do $30 million in its first weekend. Which suggests that I would have a short career as a studio executive.

Damn.

 

I never even heard of Firefly until after Serenity was released. I'm really not shocked with Flightplan, but as long as it has good legs and can break 100, I'm happy

Serenity deserves to crash and burn, since people have compared it to the original Star Wars.

 

Something wrong with those figures..."The Corpse Bride" and "Flightplan" were released the same week, and "Flightplan" has always been higher on the list than "The Corpse Bride". So how can "The Corpse Bride" have a greater North American gross than "Flightplan?"

I think and this is just a complete guess, that the weeks in release doesn't take into account Corpse Bride's early release in some places but the numbers do reflect that.

 

Well, that's possible, but $12,000,000 is a fair chunk.

 

Ok either you got a few mistakes in their or somethings messed up. So the first no. is its real gross? Because Sin City made over 74 million domestically not 35 million.

 

According to the Nat'l Post, "Serenity" had the biggest drop in the top ten: 51.2 per cent. *Sigh.*

Though they reckoned the biggest loser in the lot was "In Her Shoes", because third place behind 'a kid's movie and a lame thriller in its third week' isn't good enough.
