Amph The Box Office Thread

It's alright, it is just not any Star Wars.

 

Based on earlier predictions this year like Januaryish that's what I would have said these movies should have done. What I have are movies that SHOULD HAVE or EXPECTED to gross over 100 million, but in reality didn't. In terms of Sin City. I was expecting a 35 million opening weekend and 145 by the end of its run. Hope that clarifies it a bit.

 

Crap, this weekend did so bad. The number one film is the Fog and it only made 12 million. Pathetic to say the least. GO TO THE THEATRES!!!!

 

Go to the theaters yes, go to see The Fog? NO

 

It's go to the theatre, pay a small fortune, watch 159 commercials that I could fastforward through at home, dodge spitballs, popcorn & soda, and listen while the guy in front of me tells long, boring stories during the plot points of the movies. Then I'd consider "The Fog".

The standings last week:

1. The Fog, $11.8 million
2. Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, $11.5 million
3. Elizabethtown, $10.6 million
4. Flightplan, $6.5 million
5. In Her Shoes, $6.1 million
6. Two for the Money, $4.69 million
7. Domino, $4.67 million
8. A History of Violence, $3.6 million
9. Tim Burton's Corpse Bride, $3.58 million
10. The Gospel, $3.1 million

W & G are kings of the overseas box office, and have taken in $40 Million already. But Serenity has died.

Nat'l Post's Winner of the Week is "Flightplan" (if anything can be held to be a winner in a week in which nothing grosses more than $15 million). Loser was "Domino", which they thing should do better than 6th in wide release.

 

1. "Doom," $15.4 million.

2. "Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story," $9.3 million.

3. "Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit," $8.7 million.

4. "The Fog," $7.3 million.

5. "North Country," $6.5 million.

6. "Elizabethtown," $5.7 million.

7. "Flightplan," $4.7 million.

8. "In Her Shoes," $3.9 million.

9. "A History of Violence," $2.7 million.

10. "Two for the Money," $2.4 million.

The suits hoped that "Doom" would do considerably better, in the $20,000,000 range (it cost $60 M). And last year the highest grosser was "The Grudge" at $39 M) "Dreamer" did as expected. "North Country" looks poor considering the hype, but it's the same story: people have seen that before many, many times. "Elizabethtown" is a disaster, ditto "In Her Shoes" and "Two for the Money". "Flightplan" has surprising legs, as has "The History of Violence".

 

I hoping Flightplan can make it to 100. It's a long shot, but nothing is coming out until GOF. I knew Doom would bomb. Rock can't carry a film or fanbase like he did in 01-02.

Biggest one-week drop: "Two for the Money"

Biggest one-week increase: "Good Night, and Good Luck"

Biggest disappointment vis a vis number of theatres: "Stay"

 

This week:

1. "Saw II," $30.5 million.

2. "The Legend of Zorro," $16.5 million.

3. "Prime," $6.4 million.

4. "Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story," $6.3 million.

5. "Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit," $4.4 million.

6. "The Weather Man," $4.3 million.

7. "Doom," $4.1 million.

8. "North Country," $3.65 million.

9. "The Fog," $3.3 million.

10. "Flightplan," $2.6 million.


Serenity couldn't gross $30 million, but that calculated piece of crap can?

We're doomed, I tell you, doomed.

Loser of the Week: Nicholas Cage. "Lord of War" and "The Weatherman" both flopped. "National Treasure 2" better not make it a triple.

 

I just can't beleive that Saw2 made 30million. I guess that movie is not for my demographic anyway...but still. I was really hoping Zorro would be tops. I guess it will have to depend on the international market to make it's money cause It sure looks like it won't have much buisness here.

 

Interesting article in the latest EW on the failing Box Office. It offered all the current theories and their counter-arguments, viz:

1. the movies stink

"The current favorite excuse....But in reality, the ration of classics to crap is about level with last year or the year before. Furthermore, several well-reviewed films--"Batman Begins", "The 40 Year Old Virgin", "Mr. & Mrs. Smith", "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", "Wedding Crashers"--were huge hits. And for anyone who argues that bad movies mean bad box office, we have two words for you: "Fantastic Four". And three more: "The Longest Yard". And two more: "The Pacifier". All big grossers; all critical goats."

 

I can believe it. If Friday had been Halloween instead of tonight Saw 2 would've more than likely passed the $40 million mark.

As for this coming weekend I predict Saw 2 will still be #1 with $20 Million and Chicken Little with $18 million.

 

Chicken Little 18m. Chicken Little should be looking at 45-50 easily.

 

Since there is a dearth of children's movies, you may be right.

"There's been no "Passion of the Christ"

We're just not buying it. In any given year, breakout hits like Mel Gibson's Jesus ipic aren't anomalites--in fact, they're expected. Take last summer's "March of the Penguins" and "Crash." Now, while neigher of those films neared "The Passion's" $370 million take, a little phenomenon called "Star Wars: Episode III--"The Revenge of the Sith" did earn $380 million in 2005."

I read that too.....I couldn't believe what I was reading. A positive spin for once.

 

" Chicken Little " will most likely take the top spot from " Saw 2 " but take nothing away from it - its a commercial and critical success. Expect to see many, many sequels.

According to industry estimates, both "Chicken Little" and "Jarhead" did $10,000,000.00 better than expected.
The general box office is still down.

"Zorro" is a disappointment. "Flightplan" is still in the top ten.

 

I wonder what would have happened if V for Vendetta would have opened on the 4th as originally planned. Probably wouldn't have taken much cash from Chicken Little, but it would probably have an effect on Jarhead.

 

Chicken Little should cume around Robots numbers which is disappointing. 120-135 Total

Jarhead should cross 100 million. Maybe 110 at max.

Saw II may break 100 million with good legs. 105 tops.

Flightplan needs small declines. I'd like to see it break 100, but the odds are not good.
