Sorry, but I think some of the fanboy expectation for SUperman is just way, way, too high.
I don't see anybody but the Supe fans excited about this. And it is the non fans who will make or break this film.
And If Superman is so sure fire, explain what happened with Superman 3 and 4?

It's a Unknown quantity at this point. I like Singer, but I am also aware that every director will strike out eventually.

dudalb: Superman: The Movie adjusts to over 850 million worldwide-- that's right, more than ROTS, or EVEN Spidey I's unadjusted total. Superman II adjusts to AOTC unadjusted numbers. Superman III and IV were well-known cinematic abortions, even PRIOR to their release. The public knew the jig was up, and wisely spent their money elsewhere. Amazingly, Supes III STILL adjusts to a 300 million worldwide gross, despite being woefully pathetic. "The Quest for Peace" was somehow worse. A direct-to-video quality b-movie had better production values. The Z-grade, laughably horrendous special effects were that flick's best quality. Yep, Ed Wood would reject Superman IV.

Director Bryan Singer is attempting to set the record straight. Nolan did it for Bats. Raimi did it with Spidey 2. Now, finally, the grandest superhero of them all gets the full cinematic treatment. The man of steel deserves it. Unfortunately it's taken 28 years since Donner's amazing film, to give the public what they want. Does that mean Superman Returns will win the summer 2006 box office crown? Maybe, or it might just perform like Batman Begins.

Either way, the stage will be set for far greater box office success from future "quality" entries..... not the crap that wuz Supermans III & IV. The next Batflick will gross near-Spidey numbers thanks to the Nolan franchise restart. Ditto Singer's franchise reboot.

On another subject, I had DaVinci at 70 million-plus. Early estimates have it pegged at 80-85 million. Call me Nostradamus. Imagine if Ron Howard actually made a good film---- a film like Raiders of the Lost Ark w/out the miscast Hanks. Han would have been a better choice. With the proper pieces in place, Code would have easily broken Spidey I's 114.8 million opening weekend record.

According to Box Office Mojo this evening, the foreign gross
since last Wednesday for THE DAVINCI CODE was 147 million,
    the biggest ever.

Combining that with the domestic gross reported by Zaz,
that means in it's first week, it's made 224 million dollars.

So much for the critics! [face_laugh]

DaVinci Code won't hold long IMO. With a good OTH hold and X-Men on Friday. I'm finding it hard for DVC to cume around 225. I don't even feel 200 is a 100% lock yet.

DVC will still be #1 next week but it will have a lot of decrease in profit, X-3 is a Young male film, while the DVC is a Young male to a Senior level, with word of mouth.

Tough to say a summer champ but I'm leaning toward DVC, with Pirates coming in second.

I only knew X-3 was coming out Friday when I say it on some fast food bag a few days ago. But DVC has word of mouth. Its always hard to tell. I wont go see X-3, not floating my boat right now. I kinda got tired of them blowing up stuff at 4 in the morning near my house.

Also,if you are an X-Men fan you'll be glad to know there is a spin off movie titled Magneto. it is of course a Magneto centric movi IMDb it for more on it.

DaVinci Code? 200 million domestic is a lock.

It's already the biggest opening ever for Tom Hanks and Ron Howard
and they've both been around FOREVER. It's gonna slow down, sure,
but it's also gonna be around awhile too. And bring on the protests,
the more the merrier, that's just more news coverage and that sells
    more tickets.

I think it's world-wide gross will end up right around 500 million.

It is pretty hard to tell. But 2nd weekend for DVC won't exceed 60m. 50 is a shot. 45 is likely.

X3 is also opening at a different time X2 did.

X2 had no competition except Anger Management by opening the first week in May. It didn't have to fight an uphill battle, by opening first against Matrix Reloaded, Bruce Almighty, and Finding Nemo.

X3 however is fighting against DVC and OTH mainly. A tad bit of Poseidon and MI:3 as they quickly drop from being a real threat.

I never felt X-Men had the movie fanbase Spider-Man had, but still holds on its own.

Superman Returns will be #1 worldwide in 2006. Superman: The Movie was a global megablockbuster in 1978. That film's legend has only continued to grow. Today, the Donner film is considered an American classic. Overseas, the Man of Steel is very potent, more than any superhero.

Moleman1138: The Last Stand will open to well over 100 million for MDW. DaVinci will be a distant second. The Howard pics second weekend erosion will be considerable, as word-of-mouth is terrible.

JohnWesleyDowney: DaVinci should approach 700 million worldwide. Yep, Supes is gonna have to put in overtime on this one. I see Dead Man's Chest struggling to reach Black Pearl's 653 million worldwide tally. If the sequel is as exceptional as the original, than Code and the Blue Boy will have further competition for the summer title.

X3 is getting good reviews in the NY papers today - even the Village Voice, which usually tears a new ass in these types of movies. They all pretty much blow the ending of the film however. Just think of the most famous X-Men comic book cover art ( Uncanny # 50, I think ).

I think actually those numbers are for Fri-Sun only, which means that $103m is the 4th highest opening weekend gross ever, which totally suprised me. I was kinda expecting something around $80-90m.

You're right: here's "box office guru":

"During the Friday-to-Sunday portion of the holiday weekend, the new X-Men pic grossed a stunning $103.1M making it the fourth largest bow in history after three other May smashes - Spider-Man ($114.8M in 2002), Star Wars Episode III ($108.4M in 2005), and Shrek 2 ($108M in 2004). According to Fox, Friday opened with $45.5M which ranks as the second largest opening day in history (after the $50M Thursday debut for Episode III) and the biggest Friday gross ever. Saturday saw sales slump a troubling 29% to $32.1M while Sunday experienced a reasonable 20% drop to $25.5M. Monday is estimated to bring in about $17M. The three-day average soared to an amazing $27,947. Super hero sequels typically draw immense numbers on the first day due to fan hysteria so a Saturday drop was expected. But, the decline was extraordinarily large and could indicate that fans are not liking the new film as much as the first two."

As far as this is concerned, we'll definitely know how the movie was recieved with the general populace when next weekend's numbers come out. If this movie turns out to have some real legs, then we'll be seeing it gross some considerable numbers as the weeks progress. It'll certainly be interesting to see how it turns out, considering how huge of an opening weekend it had.

They opened it very wide, which is the technique these days. The movies don't seemed designed to last long.

Yes, I agree. The marketing campaigns for these big blockbusters
seemed designed for just a week or two at the most.

Well, here's one film that's apparently got a lot of juice in it.
I found this figure at boxofficemojo.com and they are claiming that
so far DaVinci Code's world-wide gross is at this astonishing figure:

    Worldwide: $464,981,000
    http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=davincicode.htm

Daily Variety has an article about the fact that internationally
DaVinci is holding up very strongly at the box office, especially
in Europe. If it's only been out less than two weeks and it's made
464 million dollars, there's no telling how high it could go.

    This week:

    1 N The Break-Up Uni. $38,053,000 $38,053,000 $52M
    2 1 X-Men: The Last Stand Fox $34,350,000 $175,681,000 $210M
    3 3 Over the Hedge DW $20,647,000 $112,357,000
    4 2 The Da Vinci Code Sony $19,300,000 $172,656,000 $125M
    5 4 Mission: Impossible III Par. $4,679,000 $122,664,000 $150M
    6 5 Poseidon WB $3,411,000 $51,679,000 $160M
    7 6 RV Sony $3,300,000 $61,806,000 $50M
    8 7 See No Evil Lions $2,000,000 $12,364,000 $8M
    9 22 An Inconvenient Truth ParC $1,332,000 $1,912,000
    10 8 Just My Luck Fox $825,000 $15,571,000

The Break-Up opened very strongly for a romcom. X-Men is down 66 per cent, more than it should be. "Over the Hedge" is doing well; "Da Vinci" is in the black; "MI:3" isn't; "Poseidon" is still a disaster.

DaVince Code is now at a world-wide box office gross
of $ 582,000,000 according to box office mojo. It seems
to be doing much, much bigger business overseas. It's
well on it's way to 200 million here, yet overseas it's enjoying
truly gigantic numbers. I wonder where it will be in a month?

It cleared China's censors with apparently no problem.
I wonder what people will think of it there? [face_thinking]

    It's got a 23% rotten rating at rottentomatoes.com
The critics have spoken. And no one was listening.
I don't think there's ever been a more clear cut
example of how impotent critical opinion is against
    a pop culture phenomenon.
