Calvin and Hobbes was the first comic strip I ever read. I remember buying The Authoritative Calvin and Hobbes (the second collection I think) back in 1998 when I was about 6. This is one of the few comics (Pearls Before Swine, Dilbert, and Doonesbury are the other ones) that gets better with age. So many memories.

 

The Authoritative Calvin and Hobbes was my first C&H book, too. I got it at a book fair(remember book fairs?) in 7th grade. Nowadays I've read every book so many times that 95% of the time if you tell me what the first panel of any given strip says, I can tell you what the rest of the strip is about. (Yes, I'm aware that's not much of a thing to be proud of, but oh well)

 

I remember being absolutely ecstatic when on my 7th birthday I got The Indispensable Calving and Hobbes. One of the best Bday gifts I have ever gotten.

To answer your question, it's both.

 

The ones by Pants are Overrated are pretty good... I like them. The copies that came after those are mostly pretty terrible.

I think that any discussion of Calvin and Calvinists is appropriate now that Fred Phelps has died, but I'm not sure what merit it would have to discuss Hobbesian theory, Leviathan or social contracts in that basis, per se?

Yes. That's one of many awesome things about that strip. Look at who Calvin is sleeping with.

 

Yeah, I thought so. More obvious, I think, in the later strips.

Of the 4, I thought the first (the one above) and third were very good, the 2nd and 4th a bit meh.
