    Title: Captain and the Holostar
    Author: Lola64
Characters: Syal Antilles and Soontir Fel
    Genre: Romance - AU
Summary: Soontir attends the Imperial Ball and accidentally gets the dance he's wanted to request for some time.
Notesw: This was originally for the First Sentence Challenge but my friend oldj talked me into posting it in its own thread.

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife. And for one Imperial officer there was only one woman it could be.

Soontir Fel stood near the refreshment table at the Imperial Ball watching the large group of men gather around the breathtaking blonde. She had attended several of these functions and each time had been bombarded with dance requests from potential suitors. This time maybe he?d get the nerve up to be one of them.

One of the Lieutenants in his group announced he was going over to her. The Captain followed the man until he disappeared into the gray suits huddled at the edge of the dance floor. It was a good ten minutes later that the fairly handsome man returned with a scowl on his face.

    ?No luck?? Another Lieutenant laughed.

Markin, the unsuccessful Lieutenant, picked up another glass of punch and removing the flask from his pocket added a bit of enhancers before downing his drink. ?She?s got an empty dance card. No one is getting on it.?

Soontir thought that was odd. So he asked the lieutenant if he actually saw the dance card.

?Yes. It was hanging from her wrist. As she moved I got a good look at both sides. There wasn?t any marking on it.?

?Maybe that?s a spare card.? Another man, an eavesdropper said. ?I?m sure her first card was filled up the moment she arrived.?

It was possible. But the dancing had already begun and she was not yet on the dance floor. Surely the beauty would not dismiss the men already on the list, just to tease the others. When the second waltz began to play and she still hadn?t budged the Captain began to believe that it was true. She was denying his fellow Imperials a chance to dance with her.

This made Soontir quite angry. Putting down his drink he walked over towards the group. One of the men saw him and called for attention. The others all stood straight, stepping aside for their commander.

Looking stern Soontir approached the actress. ?It has come to my attention Miss Starflare that you are refusing a dance with the officers of the Empire.?

The actress turned her blue eyes towards him. To his credit Soontir Fel did not betray the quickening of his heartbeat or the strange feeling in his stomach as she did. He stood tall before her, as he waited for her response.

?That?s not true Captain.? She answered, her voice as melodic as in her holodramas.

?May I see your dance card please??

The actress reached down for the string wrapped around her wrist and slowly handed it to him. Her eyes never left him as he looked on both sides of it. Just as the lieutenant said there were no marks made on it.

?If it?s not true, where are the marks of the officers you will dance with this evening??

He held in a smile as her face looked innocently at the card and then back at him. ?Oh my.? She said sheepishly. ?I guess it does look that way, doesn?t it??

The actress lowered her head as she begged for forgiveness.

?There is no need. A harmless error can be quickly remedied by permitting your card to be marked by these fine officers.?

To his surprise the card was handed back to him. ?Would the Captain be kind enough to make the first mark, to absolve me for my slight??

All eyes on him, Soontir placed his mark on her card. Then he handed it to the officer on his right who in turn marked it before passing it along.

The music began to play again and the Captain bowed to the lady. ?Our dance.?

He took her hand and guided her to the dance floor where his right hand reached around her back, his left taking hers as the two began to twirl around the floor

Oh! This needs more! I could see that playing out just as you described it, too. Please tell me that you are expanding this?

The gown she was wearing, a lovely blue silk, gave him a modest view of her front while the back, open down to her waist, allowed his hand to touch her smooth skin. And her fragrance, that of a Corellian rose, was purely intoxicating. Yes, if he looked at her she would know what she was doing to him.

Especially loved the man beneath the uniform.

Oh, this makes me so happy. Soontir and Syal are my all-time favorite couple in Star Wars, and I adore the Fel family.

Great that Syal is such a smooth operator. Seriously, if Jag could only take lessons from his mother...

I adored the Regency feel to this fic - it made it feel more Imperial and more authentic, in my opinion. There is something to be said for the little details - the mannerisms, the habits, even the language - that really add to this fic. There isn't anything Rebel about it, which I like (at least not yet...).

    Captain Grim [face_laugh]

Only one question - would she tell him so early that her real name wasn't Wynssa?

This was beautifully done! =D= I blinked when I saw your name on this board, though. [face_laugh] I'm used to seeing you in shades of orange! :p

I have always been intrigued by their love story and you certainly did it justice!

Thanks. I am hoping to do a part II, the Luncheon. The wheels of my mind will be turning while driving to Florida. I did mention I was driving didn't I in my PM? Yes, I'll be talking and my nieces will be writing. They're not old enough to post here, but they are avid readers of my SW OCD.

Especially loved the man beneath the uniform.

I love Soontir too. It's how this all came about. A bigger version of our Jag. [face_love]

    Mystral: oooh! lovely Lola! bravo!

Thanks Dark One. See, no killing is sometimes good. :p

Inara: Oh, this makes me so happy. Soontir and Syal are my all-time favorite couple in Star Wars, and I adore the Fel family.

I like them too, mostly Soontir. I don't know. There's just something about him.

Great that Syal is such a smooth operator. Seriously, if Jag could only take lessons from his mother...

I like that Jag takes after Dad. To me he's the Sean Connery of Star Wars, smooth and sexy.

I adored the Regency feel to this fic - it made it feel more Imperial and more authentic, in my opinion. There is something to be said for the little details - the mannerisms, the habits, even the language - that really add to this fic. There isn't anything Rebel about it, which I like (at least not yet...).

That's how I picture the Empire. Glad you liked.

    Captain Grim

It had to start somewhere, right?

Only one question - would she tell him so early that her real name wasn't Wynssa?

I know you love sticking to canon, but not even knowing about S/S's meeting before this was written it immediately went AU. I bet you Syal knew all about him anyway and was instantly comfortable enough to tell the secret. Besides, it might have been a long walk home....

    VaderLVR:This was beautifully done!

    Thanks.

I blinked when I saw your name on this board, though. I'm used to seeing you in shades of orange!

I know, a shocker for me too. I'm getting brave in my old age. :p

I have always been intrigued by their love story and you certainly did it justice!

    Thank you kindly.

    Chapter 2: The First Date

Long before her guest arrived Syal had the dining area of her suite prepared for luncheon. She hadn?t thought to ask him his preferences for food so cooked a variety of Corellian favorites.

As she touched up the place settings one last time she laughed, ?You were right mother.?

During her early teens Syal?s mother began training her in the ways ways to catch a man. In the daughter?s opinion a ?Cloak and Dagger? approach was no longer necessary. Nowadays women could be obvious in their pursuits of love.

When she left home, to chase her dream of becoming an actress, Syal soon found that being obvious gave women a certain reputation. It was that reputation that seemed to turn the decent men away. The men she suddenly found herself surrounded by were those whose only interest lied in the packaging, not the gift inside.

It didn?t take long for her to stop dating. And to clear her from the memories of those encounters she opted, like most actresses, to assume a professional name.

When she became famous, Wynssa Starflare would solicit the aid of her manager, Senkner, as escort for social functions. Whilst she accepted dances with various gentlemen, mostly military men, with her escort in sight they seemed to get the message a dance is all she was offering.

But each time she danced Syal would try to imagine herself with her partner, as a prospective companion for life. In most she saw nothing and in some she saw parts of what she was looking for.

The holostar had come to build, based on these sightings, the perfect man. Senkner told her she had been watching too many of her own holodramas. No such man existed, according to his wife anyway. But Syal knew he did. He had to. The galaxy could not be that cruel to her again.

So gala after gala, appearance after appearance, Syal searched for him. And one night, at the dedication of a new star destroyer, he was found.

He was standing near the head of a fighter squadron. They were near the left of the viewing stand where the Commander had begun discussing the magnificent carrier that would take his men to the far reaches of the galaxy.

The one she saw stood at attention, his eyes staring at the craft in the viewport. His uniform fit perfectly over a muscled torso, the red stripes of his uniform edging straight down sleek black pants.

His face, though stoic was attractive. Syal assumed he had a great smile. But she didn?t see one that night, for he was too serious.

When the dedication speech was drawing to a close Senkner escorted her to the podium where she said a few words and dedicated this vessel to the men of the 181st division of the Imperial Forces. Then she proceeded to a receiving line to greet them individually.

His name was Captain Soontir Fel. As he was announced the Captain moved forward, took her hand and bowed. An odd feeling came over Syal and she suppressed the urge to giggle so as not to offend him. When he was done Captain Fel yielded to his second in command and moved on to the officers gathering around the viewport.

Like many nights that followed Syal dared steal a glance at him when she was sure his attention was elsewhere. Sometimes she?d be close enough to eavesdrop on his conversations, listening not to the words that he was saying, because fighting schematics were foreign to her, but to how he spoke to others.

Syal began to check off her requirements that he was meeting. The man sounded intellectual, confident, respectful of others, and once rather funny. And she wasn?t about to forget how handsome he was. Now all she had to do was find out just how romantic he could be. To do that she needed him to ask her on a date.

Unfortunately Captain Fel had not approached her since that first meeting. She had to wonder if he was already spoken for. She was starting to believe the galaxy was toying with her, dangling this man before her, yet making him untouchable.

Afraid to find out but needing to know Syal made a discreet inquiry. In contrast to what she feared, Captain Fel was

Great fic! I love how you're doing Syal/Soontir fic; there really isn't a lot of this ship. Also, Syal is somewhat of an ignored character.

The ploy to get him to dance with her was really creative. I really love how they have a connection. Great post!

Thanks. I?ve got something on my list of things to do that?s kind of like this but about Alderaan. Though it?ll be more like old Ireland where they solicit a chaperone during courting. It's a Bail/Behra story.

WynnssaStarflare: Great fic! I love how you're doing Syal/Soontir fic; there really isn't a lot of this ship. Also, Syal is somewhat of an ignored character.

FelsGoddess: That's a fun visual. Great update!

I love a man who can do his own housework. And it also says a lot about him since he?s still doing it, about wanting to find the right woman to marry. He?s not settling.
