Hmm...but while we are at it, is the background behind Rey and Finn a wall painting?

Regardless of how eathlike or not the OT environments were, they were always distinctive. You would never have seen Dagobah and Yavin IV in the same movie, for example. But in TFA we transition straight from the unremarkable greenery of Maz's planet to . . . another unremarkable green planet where the rebel base is. I think this contributes to a diminished sense of place compared to the OT.

Hmm...it's easy to make a point with one image from a 2hr plus film. Here are some clearly alien vistas from TFA:

I actually think TFA benefits from the "screen shot" argument, many of the stills are I'd agree interesting but I think they suggest an effort to build atmosphere that didn't really happen on screen.

This would be a great thing to have a concrete reference for. It would help explain a great deal.

Keeping things in the UK, aside from the significant chunk of on-location shooting in the desert?
Jeez, TFA wasn't made on the cheap. I'm sure it was budgeted and that there wasn't a blank cheque to do anything at all, but man oh man, this is not a cheap looking film.
This is a film saga in which one of the instalments of the original trilogy used a painting of the most iconic ship instead of building it...
Edit; Oops - I thought I was in the cinematography thread, not the cave

I'm pretty sure that in the case of the first Death Star, it was both - painting and models - with one model used for the explosion scene in particular. (unless they used a "normal" explosion and superimposed the image over the model).

It was indeed. But ROTJ went for the cheaper option rather than the option best suited to the film

ROTJ used a model of the DS2 as well.

Both ROTJ and TESB use paintings as well as models when it comes to the Millennium Falcon though, if that's what you're thinking of.

No, I'm talking bout the falcon.

As for username. It's weird because I forget there's a Clint Eastwood reference in there at all; the username is an injoke about Welsh rock band Manic Street Preachers. They have a singer, James Dean Bradfield who has that name as a compromise because his father wanted to call him Clint Eastwood. I don't even particularly like Clint Eastwood and I never even realise people mean me when they say Clint. My own name is far less cool; I'm a Keith. And my username abbreviation that I'd use myself is CEB

An example of the matte they used in TESB (top pic) with the bottom pic showing it with actors, special effects, and platform surface added:

Yes. I'm aware that prior films used a matte and a practical falcon. And chose what worked best for each situation. It's also the case that ROTJ only used a matte painting, and that this decision means that the painting sticks out massively

I'm pretty sure that while they used a matte painting for the hangar scenes - they also used a model for most of the space battle scenes in ROTJ that had the Falcon.

I think they used the TESB prop for the sandstorm scene (which got deleted) at least.
