If he had known that the long term goal of Palps was to control in a dictatorship, would he have gone along with him?

We know he is a political idealist, but we never learn where his political views lie. He didn't know that Palps was going to not protect him, or he wouldn't have thrown his lot in with Sids.

Did Dooku really want to turn to the DS, or did he basically use them to try to achieve his own goals, even though they never became a reality since he was killed before he could set up the gov't of his ideals?

Strilo edit: Please use the Dooku discussion thread for this.

He knew all about his plans to take over the Republic and turn it into an Empire. He was fine with that as he was done with the Jedi and hated the Senate. What he didn't know was that Palpatine was going to have Anakin kill him, once the boy turned. In time Dooku would eventually turn on Palpatine, so that he could have it all to himself. But that never came to pass.

It was a real hands-on job. Dooku wasn't up to it.[face_plain]

The way I always look at it - if you want to know Dooku's story, just look at Anakin's.
They were both promised something dear to them - Anakin the power to save his wife, Dooku the power to "put the galaxy straight".

Neither actually ended up getting their prize, but it didn't matter becuase, by then, they had become utterly loyal to their Master.
    Both were duped.

Sidious was smart to go ahead and get rid of Dooku. It was pure evil on his part. Without Dooku, Sidious doesn't have to worry about any betrayal from Count Dooku. Dooku grew tired of the Jedi being misused as measly tools for the Republic to use, but still, there was too much for Palpatine to risk by keeping him alive because there was a risk that Dooku could always affliate himself with the Jedi and turn on Palpatine.

He was too dangerous to be kept alive.

To the contrary, Palpatine meant this in a personal way.

read the ROTS novel for a great summary of dooku's beliefs

there is a chapter dedicated to him

reveals him to be somewhat of a racist who despised the jedi & separatist councils for being made up of non-humans

he was setting grievous up to take his fall as well

Count Dooku...or rather... Darth Tyrannus (worst Darth name ever) simply wanted to rule the galaxy, to run the place how he thinks it should be ran. Which probably isn't that bad but the means of going about it were evil.

This is why he tried to turn Obi though he failed miserably, of course. Tyrannus was a Sith, he just wanted power and Sidious probably told him: "You must kill Anakin and Obi-Wan, only then will you.... blah blah blah."

He probably thought he was tricking old Sidious, little did he know.... classic sith.

The novelization's description of Dooku works in a vacuum (It's pretty much Generic Sith Lord 101), but combined with Dooku's known background it's just stupid. All due respect to Stover, he's a brilliant writer, but it's clear that he has favorites (Obi-wan, Mace), and disliked characters.

The ROTS novel's Dooku is basically a Palpatine lite. There's no individuality about him, or indication that this guy was a very respected Jedi for 50ish years and a part of the Order for ~70 years. In fact, it's implied that he was a racist sociopath in the extremely multicultural and actively empathic Jedi Order for 70 years and the Jedi just...didn't notice. That they didn't notice when he was a small child who didn't know how to shield his thoughts. That he had friends in the order, and they didn't notice either. That his former padawan, possibly the wisest Jedi ever, didn't notice. It's not like he was known for hiding opinions, either - he had many disagreements with the Council.

That, frankly, completely defies belief. Even given the other collective stupidities of the Council, it just takes the cake.

Even after he left the order, the Jedi all believed he was a good guy. His record was apparently clean. You can't fit ROTS's cardboard villain into the historical mold without a great deal of very silly effort, or lobotomizing the Jedi Council even more than Star Wars lobotomizes them already.

I thought Stover hit the nail right on the head ... Tyranus is portrayed to be an elitist who thinks he's higher and better than everyone else ... remember he's a "Count," born into wealth and nobility, ... more often than not, these type of people are racist and hate anything and anyone that doesn't fit into their twisted vision of perfection -- themselves ... i think that was why Dooku became Tyranus ... with the SITH in control of the Galaxy, he could create a new "Republic" in his own image ... sure he could have been like Anakin originally too, and simply had good intentions -- he wanted the end of corruption, war, create a utopian society, bla-bla -- but it would selfishly be his image of what things should be ... like with Anakin, and perhaps Palpatine, their selfish ends do not justify the means ...
