    THE DANCER

?Politics... Politics, senator, is like dancing. You have to know all steps and figures, or else you fall. But the others are dancing still.?
?But watching the dancers from the ground gives one a totally different perspective, doesn?t it, Your Grace??
?Oh, yes. But one?s out of the dance. And at times, senator Cari, the dance is a line between ?to be? and ?not to be?.?
?So, it?s better to stay on the dancefloor.?
?The answer to this is somewhere between yes and no. You see, those who stay can still add a new move to the dance, or change direction or step. But they have to go on without those who fell. And sometimes? Sometimes, senator, you learn it?s your friends who are among the fallen.?

    ?Representative Cari!?
Verza opened her eyes slowly at the voice of counsellor Altren. She turned her head towards the chrono, trying to hoist herself up. It was still early, and today was her day off... There were some reports waiting, but that was a question of mere hour or two, she could sleep longer, for sure...
?Representative Cari!? repeated the voice behind the door, rising almost to a cry.
Verza got up slowly, disentangling herself from the bed sheets, and sought after her robe. Her mind was awake now, and thinking frantically. There was nothing she had to attend that day, and the counsellor?s voice had a worried edge to it... Thoughts snapped. Something?s happened.
Verza rushed to the door, wiping the sleep away from her eyes with the back of her hand.
?Open,? she commanded, and the door opened with a quiet hiss.
There was indeed counsellor Altren, already in his Senate attire. Beside him was his aide, Cayena Starn, barely Verza?s age and experience. Her face was not really worried, Verza noted. It was frightened.
?What is it, counsellor?? Verza asked calmly, despite sudden anxiety tugging at the back of her mind.
The counsellor was trying to keep cool, but the way he was avoiding Verza?s eyes spoke volumes. It took him a while to calm down a bit more; then he swallowed and decided to get straight to the matter.
?Senator Meteer is dead,? explained Altren gravely. ?We do suspect murder.?
Verza was speechless for a moment, her hands flying up to the surprised ?o? of her mouth. ?That?s... that?s impossible...? she managed to finally find her voice.
Counsellor Altren shook his head gently, his kind face radiating concern, but he quickly rearranged his features into his usual cold political mask. Verza understood as well as him there was no time for regrets or mourning, and the best way to help them stay in focus was composure, however forced.
?We informed Erath, and the High Consul is probably already discussing the matter with the Gathering,? Altren?s tone was impassive and firm, and it helped Verza recover from the init
