ST The Dark Crystal

jerellis1 isn't claiming that Dark Crystal "isn't it's own thing".

He/she is simply asking whether the story might be similar to TFA somehow. While I myself don't see it, there is nothing wrong with questioning it since they are both fantasy movies concerning quests, monsters and the battle of good and evil.

The OP is talking more about the balance of darkness and light/good vs evil is necessary to keep things copacetic. An imbalance, or in the case of TDC, a separation, can have catastrophic consequences. Also, great sacrifice may be needed to bring that duality together/back into balance (anyone remember what happened to Kira in the climactic scene of the movie?). These are all the same themes that permeate the Star Wars trilogy.

I think the implication that JJ or Kasdan (but probably JJ) saw the similarity in themes (perhaps story elements) and that may have led to the code name Kira. That of course is total conjecture and is barely circumstantial in terms of evidence but it's an interesting observation. Until we see the final product we won't really know for sure how similar the two stories are.

Shame they cancelled the sequel.

 

Three times! I heard something a couple weeks ago about it. It's not necessarily cancelled but more like locked in a state of development hell.
