Solo The Darth Maul Cameo

The time is right to have a thread about the cameo appearance of a very certain character. Right now, Mauls name isn't in the title because of spoilers, but the mods can change it once enough people have seen the movie.

 

Was that leaked still of him sitting down pointing out with his right arm real?

 

The only issue for me is that, as a character, I think Darth Maul loses something with cybernetic limb attachments. I mean, he was just this pure force in TPM, just him and his double lightsaber.

 

I read somewhere on Reddit that you can hear Duel of the Fates very briefly during his scene, I have to pay attention to that tomorrow.

I can see multiple reactions to him being in the movie. I can see casual fans thinking WTF? Didn't this guy die when i was a kid?
I can also see a split of fist pumps and some eye rolls among fans.
They must be planning on elaborating on this though...
I'm looking forward to seeing the reactions of people coming out after seeing him and what they make off it.

 

Considering how his story ends in Star Wars Rebels - "but why?" is the thought that comes to mind.

 

Solo takes place a while before Rebels correct? I'm asking to make sure that Maul didn't somehow survive again

So since I won't be able to watch Solo anytime soon, what does Maul do in the cameo?

 

There is a new leaked reddit image going round thats a close up of him. i assume its either just the quality of the image or it looks like they aged him up abit in some way.

The lightsaber ignition felt really out of place...almost like they did it just to really spell out the fact it was Darth Maul.

 

Yeah, but considering the context I explained it away as him simply threatening/intimidating Qi'ra because he does not really believe her story. I mean everyone in Crimson Dawn seems afraid of bailing out because of Maul.

 

Did he look aged?

 

Looks aged to me (kinda similar to Rebels?) but I'm not good at remembering details. Btw he is voiced by Sam Witwer (unmistakable voice if you watched TCW or Rebels) and played by Ray Park according to the credits. His lightsaber seems to be the same one that he used in Rebels too but again I'm bad at remembering details.

 

Cool. I always liked that theme.

Yeah. I thought the same thing when Lionsgate announced that they would be making a Ulysses S. Grant movie. But why? We already know he died in 1885. And given that fact, why would we care about what he did before then?

Question for you as a fellow Rogue One superfan. How does it compare? Does the world-building feel as rich as if did in RO? And is your lukewarm reaction colored by Maul’s appearance, as I know you’re not a PT fan?

 

Because that is years later in the timeline. In terms of character utility he has a timeline just like any other character. So if it's Obi-Wan, Vader, etc there is an endpoint which to work with. Now optimally that takes place in a movie but the story that Maul had in Rebels is not one that is ever going to take place in a movie. At best at some point stories like that could be done in live-action TV series but in Maul's case since his actual return was done in animation in TCW then the sequel series following it up does make the most sense to end that story while at the same time opening up some 17 years post ROTS.

The general timeline is roughly something like this:

ROTS -19 to ANH
Solo appearance -10 to ANH
Rebels (vs Kenobi) -2 to ANH

So there seems to be something like 7 years from Solo to his first appearance on Rebels.
