The worst thing about the missing scenes was that I was looking for them. So when Jyn's on the tower, which is essentially the climactic scene, I was thinking "that TIE fighter's going to turn up in a minute." Then Krennic's there, Krennic's down. I'm still thinking "oh wow, this feels like the end. I wonder how that TIE fighter's going to fit into it." Obviously this is a problem with trailers generally, but the fact that things clearly didn't happen, but part of me was still expecting them to somehow, really kept tripping me up and taking me out of it a bit. Those trailer shots are pretty memorable, maybe more so than a lot of what's in the film.

Philosophically, if almost none of the scenes in any trailer shows up in the film, is it still a trailer?

Also of interest to some may be that Moroff (the white wookiee-like creature) is on Scarif in the behind the scenes stuff we've seen, but doesn't appear to be there at all in the movie (indeed, he's in perhaps two scenes on Jedha).

If it promotes the film it at least some sort of teaser or advertisement but not sure if it's trailer[face_thinking]

If anyone has seen or played the scarif levels for battlefront I think they are based on the original cut as well.

The final mission has the rebels running with the data tapes to a uwing to escape the planet.

Wouldn't it be ironic if the original cut had survivors, but Disney stepped in and insisted that they all die!

I felt the exact same way about Jyn's "I rebel" line from the trailer. That line was a huge marketing point for this entire movie. I actually figured mid-way through watching that she was going to survive, and that would be the line she gives to Mon Mothma and the Rebel council to explain her motivations for what she did. Which kind of did trip me up a bit and didn't allow me to fully focus on what was happening because I was expecting that scene to happen at some point. Even her death scene wasn't as impactful to me because in the back of my mind I was still wondering what happened to the "I rebel" line.

Also the shot of Jyn and Cassio running through Jedha and getting knocked down by an explosion.

From the Celebration Sizzle. I really think there was to be more to that planet.

Ah, good catch, I had forgotten that Moroff was there.

I think so, too, as you had those X-Wing pilots being escorted through the streets as prisoners. In the final film, I believe you can still see a crashed X-Wing in the background of one of the streets. I would assume the two were probably related.

According to MSW the Jyn/Tie Fighter scene was not cut because of reshoots but because it was a bit repetitive of what had happened before when the AT-ACT was taken out by X-Wings. Apparently an X-Wing took the Tie out in much the same way.

As far as missing scenes from trailers go, this is not that big a deal. Remember Fantastic Four?

I never liked that "I rebel" line. Hard to take it seriously.

Most of the shots/scenes that were cut that I wish were still in the film were the Krennic related ones. It was probably the only part of the trailers that exceeded what we saw in the final cut.

I don't think this was in the released film. Which too bad since it is a nice, and dramatic shot. I remember mistaking him for Tarkin, although oddly, it turns out that Tarkin does appear in the film as well.

Yes I thought that was weird. They talked about that character enough to where I assumed he'd at least have a few scenes of significance, but he was never even in focus. He was just a piece of background scenery.

Bingo. One thing about Edwards: the man has an eye. And you can tell that a bunch of the film was shot by the other directors who later came on for reshoots (Tony Gilroy and Simon Crane) and not Edwards. Because the shots in the trailer were fantastic images, fantastic framing and composition. Almost straight of a concept art gallery. They were on another level. They were dropped, and you don't drop quality stuff like that unless you have a reason. Reason being: much was re-written, had to be re-shot, and re-edited. And it makes sense -- the Vader scene and the vault/tower scene are much easier to do on reshoots -- they only involve one or two sets, less set up time, less cost, faster to do. No doubt the space battle was greatly expanded as well, and that could be done over at ILM. I think it's how they could get it all done on time, but in the process, a lot of really quality looking stuff was dropped. So many of those fantastic Edwards images and sequences just did not appear in the final film.
Sounds exactly right. From what I've been able to reconstruct from images found in the early trailer in this post, that was the final ending of the film. Considering her contract based on the original script (giving her a sequel option), there's also a possibility Jyn survived in that original cut.

Not according to the Art of Book apparently. There were survivor's in Whitta's first draft, but that changed early on. I believe they always died once production was up and running. The only shots I miss were the Krennic shots, but honestly, I don't know how anyone can say the recut battle would have been better. The trailers give us isolated images shorn of their full context, that may or may not have been working in the cut they had. You could replace any of those unused trailer images with images that actually made the cut (some of them from reshoots) and the trailers would look every bit as great IMO.

It seems the ending was simplified.. on first teaser the antenna is a really small and thin tower.. so probably the archive initially was in the different building from which they had to run through beach to get to the antenna.. In the movie they changed it and combined two building to one = Citadel. too bad.. Running on that beach looked so epic!

Initial drafts had some of the team surviving simply because there was assumption they would never be allowed to kill everyone. But these drafts always felt like the team needed to die to those involved.

    From the Empire podcast.

That was, until Disney gave him the green light to kill everyone. “We thought we weren’t going to be allowed to but Kathy [Kennedy, President of Lucasfilm] and everyone at Disney were like ‘Yeah it makes sense. I guess they have to because they’re not in A New Hope,’” Edwards told Empire. From then on, he had his license to kill, and the survivor ending wasn’t even filmed. “I kept waiting for someone to go, ‘You know what? Could we just film an extra scene where we see Jyn and Cassian, they’re okay and they’re on another planet?’” Edwards says. “And it never came. No one ever gave us that note, so we got to do it.”

Damn! Cool. I was really surprised that everyone got killed. I mean, I know they are not in ANH but it could have been easily explained. But itmakes this movie even better and shows how many sacrifices they had to take to destroy DS.

I agree. I think it's the correct ending that we got.
