Hello!

After a nearly four-year hiatus, the pilot index started by Jesina_Dreis and Myri_Antilles has returned. Lane_Winree and Mirax_Corran have been handed the entry codes and are now managing the bar (though we have to be honest, Lane is a pretty pathetic bouncer).

What is the DownTime Pilot Index? In brief, we're a community of fanfiction writers and readers who love the starfighter jockeys of the GFFA. Whether they be Reds, Golds, 181sts, Rogues, or Wraiths, we love reading and writing about their exploits.

We have several goals in mind?

• An index of all Rogue, Wraith, and other squadron fics on the Jedi Council boards. We?re in the minority here (in case you haven?t noticed ), so it?s just too blasted hard to find each other on the boards themselves.


• A discussion thread about the pilots, their characterizations, tips for writing a good squad fic?whatever you all want to talk about, provided it pertains to pilot writing.


• A challenge every month or so, with links to responses posted here as well


• Featured fics and author interviews

If you need help submitting your fics please contact the Pilot_Fic_Index, Myra, or Lane. If all else fails, just PM us what information you can and we'll get it marked up for you

A Note: Submissions do not have to be squadron-centric. They can focus on the characters themselves (for example, a story about Wedge?s life before his parents? death is perfectly includable).

How about original characters? We love them! So long as they're pilots, they're welcome here.

Challenge #3: Rookies and Greenhorns

This one comes courtesy of DT Index friend InyriForge.

As much as a commanding officer would like to bring in seasoned pilots every time there's a roster vacancy, young pilots fresh from flight school or some moisture farm on Tatooine are going to be brought in at some point to fly with the big boys. For some squadrons and veteran pilots, this can be cause for some conflict. Others will embrace the new kid in the group.

For the greenhorn, it's often a daunting experience to join an active-duty squadron for the first time.

The challenge is this: Write a fic about a rookie

This one is open ended, and for a reason. Feel free to attack this challenge from any angle. Perhaps you want to tell this story through the eyes of the rookie. Maybe you would like to get into a veteran's head and see what their thoughts about the new baby-faced pilot is.

And as always, both canon and original characters are welcome.

Submissions will be accepted from February 22nd to May 24. Voting will take place the following week.

If you want to participate and would like brainstorming help, feel free to ask in the thread and keep an eye out for an upcoming discussion topic geared towards this challenge.

Discussion Topic #9: Theme Songs!

Here's an absurdly simple and fun topic for all of you. No need for bullets either!

Digging into your music libraries, what theme songs or music scores would you apply to your favorite pilots?

You can assign songs for profic pilots, original characters, and pilots in between those gamuts (whatever that might be).

For example, do you think Tycho's theme should be "Sharp Dressed Man" by ZZ Top? (I don't know, go with me here )

Hello everyone!

I'm Lane, one of the new indexers and thread hosts. It's been a few years since the DownTime index has been active, but I'm thrilled to let you all know that we are back and ready to deliver all sorts of flightstick jockey wonderfulness.

Let me take the chance to say I'm excited to be running the index again. I'd like to thank Maggy for holding onto the index sock the last few years. Big thanks as well go to Jes and Myri for establishing the first incarnation of the DownTime Index.

Also working with me (and I'm sure she'll pop in soon to say hello) is my good friend and occasional beta reader Mirax_Corran.

In the coming weeks Mirax and I will be adding some new fics to the index. We'll also be introducing the first of hopefully many challenges. Today, however, we'd like to give you DownTime 3.0's first discussion topic!

Where do you hail from? I'm presently located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where I am attending college. This is exciting, because it's a recent development.

Who's your favorite pilot? Tycho. Oh goodness it's Tycho.

Squadron? I think I have to say the Rogues. Cause Tycho.

How about your favorite starfighter? I have no idea, so I'm just gonna say the Blade-32 in a pathetic attempt to start an argument.

THe one issue I have got with it is that there appears to be a chapter missing somewhere between pages 5 and 6. Otherwise it is a fantastic read so far.

Heh, thanks. Lane has already recommended at least 4 or 5 fics to me (which I as the padawan have dutifully read) He linked me to this page and I am gradually working my way down lol. It might take me a while.

 

NOOOOO!!!!! Just "finished" the story. THe author disappeared off to the Peace corps six years ago leaving it unfinished. After this length of time I doubt it ever will be. Such a shame. Had absolutely fabulous prospects.

Btw, can the messages above with the lists of fics be editted? I have just been reading one; Not the World?s Greatest Babysitters but Daughter_of _yubyub. I struggled through the forum posting of it and really enjoyed it. Only to find at the end that it has been archived and is now in a much more readable format.

You might want to take a look at the TF.N Boards Welcome Forum. The community over there is a great place to get your feet wet and figure out how everything works around here!

Hello, folks! What a fantastic index!

I'm Trika (or Trikes), and I'm currently located in southeastern Virginia in the United States. I am the lead of the Talon Intelligence Squadron Restoration Project, which is an epic group effort to bring back the oldbie fanfic Talon Intelligence Squadron, the late Talon Squad Leader's wonderful creation that spanned twenty huge threads, two entire years, and dozens of authors back from January 2000 until 2002. The current effort is ongoing, and a solid team of old and new authors have created four books with a fifth nearly complete, multiple extra stories and scenes, a message board and website, character art, and official crests and shirts... all of which we call "the Talonverse," our incredible place in the galaxy far, far away.

We Talons are very much made for an index like this! Our authors have their own characters and stories, which I'll let them post and talk about as they find this index. Personally, I'll be sending information concerning our official books to the index and eventually falling into the discussions about my own creations as the other Talons find this index and as the topics and challenges warrant. All of my answers to the other questions would be from the Talonverse, so I'll get to them eventually, I'm sure! I'm entirely excited for this index, though, and for the other Talons to jump in here and give their take on not only our Talonverse, but of the wonderful fics they've read from various authors here!
