JCC the dress is blue and black/ is it yanny or laurel?/ Horse direction

When I first saw it and before I knew I was supposed to choose "black and blue" or "gold and white", I saw it as blue and gold.

What that says about me, I have no idea. (insert joke here).

 

It's not white, that much is certain.

 

For about an hour it was white and gold but ever since (nearly more than 24 hours now) it's been black and blue. Somehow my eyes corrected themselves.

 

Me too me too! It's made it hard to care about all the hullabaloo.

Ummm, lilac and golden brown? Why is that not an option? IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH ME?

The reviews are...quite something.

 

I can see some gold highlights. But I honestly have NO IDEA how anyone could look at that picture and see the color white anywhere in it.

I saw it as blue and black the first couple times I saw it. Then opened the Buzzfeed article, saw a white and gold dress - assumed it was a different picture - scrolled down through the article, scrolled back up, and saw a blue and black dress. Checked to see if it was a gif. Mildly panicked. I now sometimes see white/gold briefly, before my eyes adjust and it fades into blue and black, and I can't go back.

I found this vine pretty illuminating.

 

How and why is this a thing in the first place?
