The French have a proper electoral system.

First cock-up of the second round, Macron told workers (who face losing them jobs as the factory is moving to Poland) that there is nothing he can do about it and the workers "should accept it" - plays right into the hands of Le Pen.

Yes, basically the Economist has helped its least worldly and literate of readers - those in the US - understand how a functional system would look if they abandoned common sense and implemented the American system.

Note: Pretty much anything where one abandons common sense results in the American output. The English language; the concept of society, capitalism... everything, really.

Here's one way (or rather two ways) of looking at what's happening in France (sorry, I don't remember who put this graph together).

French Parliamentary elections in June, so it will be the perfect opportunity to really assess whether or not the traditional left and right is dead (well, French socialists)

There was a great fear after Trump's election that his victory would lead to a populist wave. I think it's actually having the opposite effect, mobilizing the turn-out for the opposition.

Europe has a history of far-right populism and we know the outcome, the US does not. Which is why you're probably right.

I can't tell if it's the Russian or the British government behind these hacks.

Jokes aside, I don't think it will have a large impact on the presidential election (the timing is terrible as there is a French media ban on politics at the moment) but it will definitely affect the Macron presidency and the legislative elections.

Apparently they were getting sophisticated phishing emails for a month. It came from the same group that attacked the DNC. What they do not know is if it is the same group that dropped all this last hour info.

48 hour media is in effect now, regarding reporting on political news in France.

The only way Macron will not be President is low turnout from his voters.

Not sure how you can make that claim. It was Le Pen who seemed to fall apart completely. Even her supporters deemed that to be a horrible debate for her. And this can be seen in the polls that came out afterwards as well, all showed Macron's lead widening.

Schulz is the epitome of a European bureaucrat who stands for the path that caused this entire mess. Any claims that he is trying to fix the EU are just absurd, nothing but an attempt to portray him as the opposite of what he actually is.

At this point it seems like the effect of his announcement as SPD-candidate is starting to wear off. The CDU is moving back towards high 30s again while the SPD has a tough time keeping its level. Still at a much better level than it used to be, so there's still a solid chance for change, but at this point I really wouldn't bet on it. The current difference varies between 5 and 8 percentage points, which might even be enough of a lead even if one of the AfD or FDP wouldn't make it into parliament.

Macron's campaign is also not incompetent. Hillary's was.

Danish media have reported on early voting and Macron is 62-64% (take with a pinch of salt)

    Belgian poll:

    Macron 62%
    Le Pen 38%

Worrying, though, turn out is 65% - 5 points lower than when Hollande became President.

Turnout has been running around 65% according to BBC News. This is sharply down from the last two Presidential elections.

I'm playing The Division at the moment. I'll tune in a minute or so.

Foreign and domestic media are refusing to cover Le Pen's speech tonight. Win or Lose.
