How much I would love IX completely free of OT characters. They had their trilogy and this one belongs to new characters. They deserve to headline at least one movie all by themselves. Sucks that LF doesn't have confidence in them, though, cause TLJ is right now marketed as even bigger OT nostalgia than TFA, which is saying a lot. :(

They have a full saga ahead of them and for sure without any OT characters + possible spin-offs. Is it really necessary that we old fans who waited 30+ years, that we are left with nothing? [face_plain] I know you only care for your new characters, but how would you feel to be at the same situation 30 years ahead? And people constantly wanting them to get rid off? [face_plain]

Seeing the OT characters again after so long is a huge part of the appeal for me. And the new characters, of which there are plenty, still get their moments to shine. Rey is the main protagonist, Kylo is the new Vader, Poe is the hotshot pilot and Finn offers an interesting First Order and Resistance mix. I don't see the new characters being shortchanged at all.

The ST always struck me as just as much of a farewell to the legendary trio as it is an introduction to new characters.

I think Lucasfilm was pretty darned ballsy to basically show us how it all ended in tragedy, in a way, for Luke, Leia, and Han. Their stories thus far have certainly NOT been fanservice!

I think, too, a lot depends on how connected the three trilogies are intended to be. If they are indeed a "Saga" first and foremost, I expect significant connections to the OT and certainly to the PT. I mean, this is how the movies have been and continue to be marketted. It's not an unreasonable fan expectation. Maybe the next trilogy will be to the Saga like new Star Trek tv shows are to old ones. But Star Trek always struck me as primarily focused on world-building, while the characters themselves have been at the heart of Star Wars. Perhaps that's why there's so many SW EU materials with totally new characters, but the theatrical movies have been tied to one overarching narrative filled with familiar faces.

ETA: Also note - this is basically the last we CAN see of Han/Luke/Leia. The new heros are young; Lucasfilms could have them star in tons of new stuff.

And I figure Lucasfilm knows who its audience is. Making movies for a certain audience is not equivalent to gratuitous fan service. I don't see people complaining that they haven't retired most of the 50+ year old superheroes in favor of "something new."

I'm also not sure why the OT characters must be immediately escorted offscreen but X-Wings, Jedi, lightsabers, etc must be kept? Are they really more integral to the franchise's beloved status?

I think the nostalgia trip (and I enjoyed the trip) ended after TFA.

Anyone know when the digital edition of the Vanity Fair will be available for purchase online? I just checked and it is still last month's edition available. I ask this because the cover story will be alot more in depth in the "paid for" digital edition.

I am fairly confident of this, as well. Sure, this film features major characters from previous films. They happen to be major characters in this universe. Luke finally staying home and not getting involved would epitomize undoing a character's arc. :p

nightangel Considering how nice ending they got in ROTJ, I don't think that ST did them any favors. And yes, if ST characters got a ROTJ ending, I would prefer it to be intact and new trilogy to make a huge time jump that doesn't spoil it.

as for Rian's quotes about TLJ title, are we sure that VF interview is his latest take on it? How much ahead of cover story they make interviews anyway? It didn't happen yesterday.

but you have 30+ years ahead of you with all new stories about Kylo, Rey and co. while we old fans only have this last chance to see our heroes. :(

I think he'll be like Ben Kenobi in the sense he's older, wiser and not rushing into things. Rey is the younger hero of the story, just as Luke was in ANH. But when older Luke comes to fighting, I bet his skills will be more impressive than what we saw during Ben's last stand against Vader.

I could have SWORN that KK/RJ had previously flat-out stated that the Last Jedi is Luke...

I posted this in the Snoke thread, but I think with the focus on kyber crystals and lightsabers that it would be cool if Snoke played a part in helping Anakin find a new crystal for constructing a saber in between episodes 2 and 3. Maybe it would play a part in Anakin's fall to the dark side and show Snoke's interest in the Skywalkers.

I agree. Rey is my favorite SW character ever, but not having Luke around for awhile longer would be a gut punch. Knowing we have no choice but to lose Leia is awful, too. There's no doubt Rey & co will dominate the storytelling, but there's no reason to jettison the OT characters who are the foundation of the entire franchise.

I believe RJ said that going by the opening crawl of TFA Luke is the last Jedi. He didnt flat out state that is what the title refers to.

Nothing to do with nostalgia. Its one of the many strengths of this saga, people live and die, heroes and villains exists from tales as old as time. Luke, Leia, Han, they are not only myths and Luke and Leia are only about 53 years old when this new trilogy story take place, its only natural and simply very organically written that they take part in this new chapter of course. The marketing though, could be seen as something that`s exposed paralleled with the content of the film, but its also the strength of this franchise that the demographic stats says Star Wars have fans of all ages. Now, overshadow some of the new characters could happen, that happens in many films ( one of the reasons Michael Arndt said he needed to leave out Luke from TFA), but i feel they really are making a strong case with Rey as a character, to have her shine through. Skywalker or not. As we saw in TFA, Ridley has more enough charm and acting ability to pull off a strong performance.

I don't think that new characters are shortchanged in TFA but they are shortchanged in TLJ marketing. I want to hear about them yet all LF is serving is Luke and Leia. It's very depressing to me. I'm not buying VF because I honestly expected something else and didn't get it.

3 of the four VF covers are made up by newcomers. If you want to hear about them, you will have to watch the movie. I heard its coming out soon......

I think we'll get a lot more of the new characters closer to December.

The way I figure it, this far out from the release date, Lucasfilm figures those really paying attention will be hardcore, longtime fans, who are probably way more excited about Luke Skywalker's return - and desirous of Princess Leia tributes - than other fans are?

Yes, VF is skewing older so I understand why their approach is like that instead of something as fun as Finn and Rose on or with the space horse. I honestly expected the latter but that's my fault.

And its 40 years of Star Wars :)

Marketing will no doubt heat up considerably by September, October, and gear towards a younger audience who live their lives in the moment and with social media controlling much of their time.
