The reason why new walkers do not surprise me is that I expected exactly this, "defense research and subsequent advancements in military technology lead to improvements upon extant weapon designs"

Apparently, George Lucas early idea for ROTJ was that Luke should defeat Vader alone. The Sequel Trilogy would then have been about Luke searching and finding his sister (who was not Leia at that time in production). Episode IX would have depicted Luke and his sister fighting against the Emperor in a Lava cave.
But Lucas scrapped the ST and moved some of its storylines into ROTJ. Luke's sister became Leia, but he would have still confronted Vader and the Emperor in that Lava cave. However, this idea was also scrapped and the confrontation happened on Death Star II instead.

When I first read that there was a Sith cave under Vader's castle, I immediately thought this could play a pivotal role in VIII or IX. Given that we already visited the First Jedi Temple, it may very well be the case that we could also see an ancient Sith location. And with Kylo's Vader obsession, it makes sense if he would go to Mustafar to visit the castle and the cave.
I can already imagine that we'll get a very similiar scene in IX: Just replace Sheev with Snoke, Vader with Kylo and Luke with Rey.

 

The whole "low center of gravity" thing could be realized simply by changing the lifeform on which it's based.

We're about six and a half hours out from Disney's panel at CinemaCon. Apparently Star Wars is at least going to come up in some capacity, but I hope they show footage, even if we don't get to see it until Celebration. At least we can live off of scraps footage descriptions until then.

 

The footage they'll show at CinemaCon is likely the same reel they showed at the Shareholder's meeting. That's what happened last year.
