boy, you said it, he does deliver the lines with relish and gusto!

I'd completely forgotten about this one, but you're right about it being included on your list, and I remember when the film came out, it was definitely one of my favorites:

    2. And you, young Skywalker! We will watch your career with great interest.

Ranking His lines? That's very difficult indeed...

    I'll try:

"Viceroy, I don't want this stunted slime in my sight again"
Hehe... stunted slime, he delivers that line so well. [face_love]

"Now they'll elect a new Chancellor, a strong Chancellor..."
This line gives me the chills: his masterplan finally starts to unfold. I'm so happy for good old Palpster!! :D

"But what senator would have the courage to propose such a radical amendment"
I always loved this one, especially the "such a radial" part, Ian made some great facial expressions during that.

"I love democracy, I love the republic"
It's an "aww... sweet Palpy" moment, poor old Palpy is almost in tears.

"Welcome home, Lord Tyranus. You have done well"
He makes an afwul name like "tyranus" sound incredibly cool :p How does he do it?

"You ever heard the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise?"
The pitch of his voice is awesome during that line, probably because he had Laryngitis at the time (I think GL said this on the DVD commentary).

"Once more the Sith will rule the galaxy... and we shall have... peace"
That's just a beautiful, chilling delivery. The "peace" part is deliverd so well that you 'd believe every word he's saying.

"Search your feelings, Lord Vader, you'll know it to be true"
It's the DVD addition, but I love it very much. They way Ian delivers the line really shows that Palps knows that Vader is lying to him, like "don't give me that BS, Vader".

"Oh, I'm afraid the deflector shield will be quite operational when your friends arive"
That's sarcastic Palpy we all love!! :p The way he delivers the "friends" part is quite evil too.

"If you'll not be turned, you-will-be-de-stoyed!!!"
Evil Palpster all the way, don't you just love the "you'll be destroyed" part" [face_love] He can destroy me anytime! :p

There are many, many more (the whole opera scene, Anakin's seduction scene...), but these are the ones that I thought of for the moment. ;)

those are some great choices Darth China...I had also forgotten about this choice morsel:

"But what senator would have the courage to propose such a radical amendment?"
I always loved this one, especially the "such a radial" part, Ian made some great facial expressions during that.

Anyone else got their top ten Ian McDiarmid line readings?

I don't have a list of ten right now but this is by far the best line:
    "Not from a Jedi."
Just the way he looks when he says it and the way he says it is wonderful.

Welcome home, Dark Jedi Kenobi. We have been expecting you.* [face_devil]

*I think that's one of Ian's best, "Welcome young Skywalker, I have been expecting you."

So many memorable lines . . . some PT favs (no particular order, cause they're all undeniably awesome):

"Good, Anakin, good. Kill him. Kill him now."

"The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities, some considered to be unnatural."

"Your Majesty, I promise if I am elected, I will bring an end to corruption."

"Excellent. Everything is going as planned."

"All those who gain power are afraid to lose it."

"I can feel your anger. It gives you focus. It makes you stronger. "

"This is my apprentice, Darth Maul. He will find your lost ship." (and ya know what . . . he DID!)

Most of my favourite Palpatine lines are from ROTS.

"The end of the war is near, General."

"It's ironic... he could save others from death, but not himself..."

"Only through me can you achieve a power greater than any Jedi."

"I can feel your anger... it gives you focus. Makes you stronger."

    "I am the senate."

    "You're fulfilling your destiny, Anakin."

    "Rise."

And the line I look forward to most now when watching ESB:

"There is a great disturbance in the force."

Those 4 words, I AM THE SENATE, really tells everyone just how big Palpatine's ego has become. The delivery is perfect.

JWD, I agree with that. Those four words sum up how inflated his ego is at that moment.

What a great thread to honor the man who -- in my opinion -- has turned in the best performances in the Star Wars films.

Episode III was his film -- and he completely delivered. He was seductive, fatherly, devious, and lethal in showing Palpatine hatching the final elements in his grand scheme.

I love Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, and Hayden Christensen in these films, but McDiarmid -- with Christopher Lee a close second -- really got these films. He understood how they were written, how they were meant to be presented, and how to interpret the material.

When thinking of his performance, I always go back to the scene at the opera. I think it was on the Episode III commentary where I heard he had a touch of laryngitis. He went with it, and it gave the scene very creepy edge.

I'm so happy an performer like McDiarmid got something like Star Wars to show what kind of actor he is. Not enough can be said about him.

    Favorite lines:
"Your arrogance blinds you ... NOW you will experience the full power of the Dark Side."
    ... and moments later "

"Ahh, I have waited a long time for this, my little green friend."

I smile just thinking about it.

Your faith in your friends is yours!

    Ooooooh..... Touche, Emperor....

His Next scripted line (which would have been delivered perfectly) began "I'm rubber and you're glue....

Are there any lines you wish Palpatine would have said?

Ohhh yes, I love his slightly sour face when he says that, the knowingness. Another line I've loved ever since I first saw him in ROTJ at age 17 and marveled at that (I thought) 80-something actor is "Your faith in your friends is yours!" I am so grateful he came through last year's health scare OK...LONG MAY HE REIGN!!!

I think it comes from him being mainly a stage actor. Most stage actors have to have a much greater imagination and they also have to deal with much more theatrical, OTT writing.
