What do you recommend to your fellow FF-UK posters - and maybe we can discuss what we liked/didn't like that has just come out.

    Film

    Golden Compass
    http://www.goldencompassmovie.com/
Based on the "His Dark Materials" trilogy by Philip Pullman, the film "Golden Compass" is based on the first part, called "Northern Lights" in the UK, but renamed for the US audience. Very enjoyable, like someone described to me, it's a cross between "Lord of the Rings" and "Chronicles of Narnia". Some great concepts and intriguing ongoing storyline, this is definitely one to watch over the next few years. And the bear clans are impressive!

    Comic
B.P.R.D (Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defence): Killing Ground #5 of 5
    http://www.darkhorse.com/profile/profile.php?sku=14-763
BPRD is an offshout from the fabulous Hellboy series (read the comics, don't judge them by the film). And right now BPRD is on top form! Hellboy/BPRD are part of Dark Horse Comic's horror line, and "Killing Ground" suits the genre so well - monsters, mayhem and plenty of death and destruction. I'd recommend reading the early stuff before you go into this series, but if you want to read an exceptional comic series, I'd recommend Hellboy and BPRD.

    Book
Jedi Vs Sith: Essential Guide to the Force
    http://www.starwars.com/eu/lit/ref/news20070308.html
Just out! It's the new book in the essential line, and this time it focuses on all things Jedi, Sith and Force-like. Beautifully illustrated and nicely written, I'd recommend this to all wannabe Jedi on here.

    Anyone got recommendations?

    An upcoming film recommendation - "I am Legend" ( http://iamlegend.warnerbros.com/ )

Im curious to see what the Golden Compass looks like...as its supposedly a trilogy or summat? The new Harry Potter to be released around xmas time me thinks? Just seen the new Will Smith movie - looks exactly like the old Charlton Heston 'Omega man' - not that they have given it any credit for ripping off the storyline as far as I can see....

Books - I bought Outbound Flight and Allegiance this year (not like me - I usually read more books...). Outbound Flight rocked and filled a lot of blanks or questions for me. Allegiance - well - I read about 20 pages so far....I will get through it Im sure!

I didn't think much of Golden Compass but then again I wasn't paying much attention to the film. Might check the books out since I've read that they've missed loads out of them.

Can't believe it was made by the director of American Pie

I recommend anything set in Scotland, about Scotland, filmed in Scotland, acted by Scots, written about Scotland and published in Scotland with the exception of anything with Jimmy Krankie in it who is not fandabbydozie in the slightest!

Jase - "The Dark Matters" (which Golden Compass is part 1) is a trilogy :) Though from the bookseller mag we got in work today, there are other books being written set in that universe (upcoming is one called "Lyra's Oxford" and there are hints in that to the book following).

"I am Legend" is Will Smith's new movie, this little bit from IMDB may clear up why it seems familiar -

"I Am Legend is the third movie based on the 1954 Richard Matheson book of the same name (Matheson also penned Nightmare at 20,000 feet.) The first movie was called "The Last Man on Earth" starring Vincent Price, it was filmed in Italy in 1964.

This second movie based on the book was the 1971 classic movie "The Omega Man" that starred Charlton Heston as Robert Neville and Anthony Zerbe as Matthias the leader of the infected people that do their best to kill Charlton Heston due to the fact that Neville represents everything wrong that used to be before the virus."

Don't follow the link below btw until you have seen the film, it has spoilers (just linking where the quote is from);)
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0480249/synopsis

    I am Legend opens 27th Dec :)

Coz - "I wasn't paying much attention to the film"
There is no reply to this ... just :p
Tis a good film! Not talking to you :p
Get back to whatever you were doing :p

Sie - oh yeah! I was gutted to learn it was out 18 Jan though, thought it was coming out in December. The "R" rated trailer shows it may well be back to previous Alien form ;) Got the PSP game for it, not bad.

Just for you George - http://www.scotlandthemovie.com/

    FREEDOM!

Tim, the original AVP should never have been a 15. I'm glad it's back to being an 18 with the new one.

Don't blame me, they went daft (or more likely $ crazy), especially when both franchises were always 18 cert beforehand - maybe it being a successful comic series made them lower it since they mistakenly expected a younger audience? Looks like they realised their error, though tbh for me it's not about the gore anyways.

I got bored half way through, so I can't help it if I got distracted. Claire seemed to like it more and even asked if there will be a second film.

I like to see the smaller, indie films, so I particularly enjoyed 'Eagle vs Shark' this year:

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0494222/

a film very much along the same vein as Napoleon Dynamite.

And just to completely contradict myself and my 'indie films' comment, next year I'm looking forward to Sweeney Todd (not just for Johnny Depp, honest =P~), Harry Potter and Indy.

Music-wise, there's possibly another Kaiser Chiefs album next year and I might get myself to the Bloodstock Music Festival in August.
