lensflare-esque effects for Force powers like in video games? uhoh... :p

I do hope he IS talking about Mortis. Also wouldn't mind some flashbacks during Episode 7 to cover some EU events in the past quickly like they did with Kirks and Spocks backstory in the Trek reboot. Sure we got a crawl.. but why not? does not hurt SW.

I guess they could, but the Star Wars style doesn't really lend itself to flashbacks.

I mean, I can just imagine old man Han referencing a past event, then promptly tilting his head upwards at a slight angle and waiting for the lens flare to signal the start of the flashback.

well TCW (omg I use it for an argument, shame over me!) used flashbacks as well as visualised Force visions instead of the movies disembodied voices of Obi Wan or just "worried Luke" in Dagobah cave... so in that style I could see a character reliving a past event or going down memory lane in a Forcestrong place where it fits the story. not random flashbacks.

technically in the trek reboot the flashbacks were not even flashbacks since they were not in the movie proper but came before it in chronologically correct order. so basically a "past event" after the crawl and then jumping forward in time to the main movie plot could work indeed. Like say have it open ANH style with a big bang and space battle of the EU era.. then transgress to more silent times with peace and the Solokids alive and well.. and then a timejump to the true Movie story later in timeline. that could work. not necessary but I'd not mind them doing that and in the process showing us some EU or past glory before the actual movie plot hits being tied to these past events somehow.

could be them showing one of the final battles between Ackbar and Pelly.. then fast forward to peace accords and solokids growing up before they settle in the movie era with surviving Solokid as adult with someone else as apprentice.. or allana maybe etc.

would round up nicely the EU in short nods and make the crawl or dialogue later on less explanation heavy

I imagine Nick might keel over if the Ackbar and Pellaeon engagement is finally depicted on-screen in a movie.

A few brief scenes at the start of the movie wouldn't bother me that much, no.

Depends what the story is though, as there's no inherent need to spend time dwelling on what happened before the opening scene pops up, as Episode 4 works perfectly well simply throwing people in at the deep end.

Too often nowadays audiences are assumed to be incapable of using their own imagination, but there's no requirement to spell everything out to tell a good story.

agreed... the trek reboot only used it to show the alternate timeline not delving into how the reboot came into being, which the lead in comic explained and the movie not really repeated a lot at all. without that comic the movie would be weird to a lot of fans.

A painless tie-in comic to iron out issues is just what we need.

By the team that brought us Legacy, with Abel and Jason Fry supporting and three short stories in Insider wrote by Luceno, Stover and Zahn to finish off the rest.

If you think he looks different there, wait until you see him in The World's End.

I'd not want the Legacy team anywhere near the new movies if I had any say...

I'm the last person to want to bring up lens flares in here, but I happened to see the 3D version of the STID trailer last night with Iron Man and it raised a very interesting question: when you're converting footage into 3D, exactly where on the z-axis does a lens flare go?

For non-gamers for whom this post's sarcasm will be lost, suffice it just to say: I don't like EA.

This is actually good news, relatively speaking. There was a minute there where it was suspected that the latter was all we'd be getting from now on. Also, it sets a precedent for Disney not being wholly uninterested in outside licensees.

Isn't Bioware a part of EA?

Yeah. From the press release: "As part of the agreement, EA studio teams DICE (Battlefield series) and Visceral (Dead Space series) will join BioWare (Mass Effect series, Star Wars: The Old Republic) in the development of new Star Wars games." So BioWare will continue to be on the Star Wars account, as will two other sub-studios.

But still, ****. This is exactly what I didn't want to happen: Disney just shrugging and subcontracting the entire license out to another megastudio because it's just too much bother to make games themselves. I wanted to see them actually make use of the license, letting great studios take a crack at individual Star Wars games in collaborations that made sense. This is just "Hey, whoever pays us the most money, we'll let you make Star Wars games for the next six years," or however long. Goodbye, hopes of a nineties-style renaissance.

Yep, and they are confirmed to be already starting work on a new SW game, along with DICE (Battlefield franchise) and Visceral (Dead Space). So despite my hatred of EA, I'm cautiously optimistic about the choice of developers, one of whom we know can make great SW games.

    EDIT: Damnit, I got ninja'd.

    Exactly my concern as well.

EA have repeatedly been criticised for buying up good publishers and subsequently ruining them by forcing them to mass market rather than focus on pushing boundaries and making truly memorable classics, so I'm not expecting to see a 90s revival, just a continuation of exactly the same commercialised trash that LucasArts have been releasing for most of the past decade.

Edit: Indirectly, where this could be a positive sign, however, is that if Disney just want to outsource Star Wars to the highest bidder, even when they could keep it in house with their own studio, that might mean that the comics are safe with Dark Horse, provided they are prepared to offer Disney enough money to retain the rights.

So the next time there's a $100 bumper offer for a 4 page preview, we all need to give Dark Horse the money so that they can offer Disney a sackload of cash. :p

Does Dark Horse have enough money for that though? And in Lucasarts' and EA's case, that was when Disney didn't already own in-house a huge publisher. I hope Dark Horse has enough money, but...

Wasn't EA voted worst company in America several times? Not that I'm that surprised this happened, considering the developers mentioned, there could be some hope, guess it depends on whether they have anything ready to announce by E3. And whether its clear they're really rushing something (like TFU2) or just an announcement of a name and concept.

Its not the worst possible news (shutdown of Lucasarts was bad not that there was much left), but still not sure how badly it'll turn out with Star Wars games under EA direction. Probably mostly quick cash grabs (Battle of Yavin, Battle of Hoth for the umpteenth time), but could lead to a few good action games depending on the engines they're using and/or bad for canon. I doubt they would use that much money, but a combination of something like Battlefield and a Clone Wars game could turn out decent, although they'll probably run over more old canon. Not like we were getting that many great games for a while (1313 potential aside and that was mostly speculation), but still not cheering at this news. Unless Bioware somehow has enough people to make more non-MMO Old Republic era games, but considering even the Bioware founders have left by now, and probably a good deal of Bioware is busy with either TOR or whatever is next for Mass Effect, I'm not expecting much.
