I have a question about the galaxy that Luke and Leia gaze at in the ending ESB...

Was the Star Wars galaxy or was that another galaxy entirely?

It seemed to far away to be their own galaxy.

I believe winter_chili is right. Lando and Chewie were heading off to Tatooine, which is relitivly close to the Rishi Maze.

Yeah, but what is the Rishi Maze?

First of all, this is, of course, rationalization after the fact: The idea of the Rishi Maze didn't exist until AotC.

Second of all, I just think Lucas doesn't know much about astronomy. I mean...parsecs?

    It's the milky Way.
Check a photograph and you'll see it.
You're right, not much astro-knowledge from Master Lucas, then.

Does it matter? Seriously, I think you people look too deep into things sometimes. It's just another galaxy. :p

It's not a galaxy. It's the Rishi Maze.

I think it is our galaxy... and in a couple of years we will collide and all the wonders of star wars will be wonders of earth. mm.

I doubt that it is our galaxy, as Star Wars is set:

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away

    ;)

As Bib said, it's the Rishi Maze.

I've never heard that it's the Rishi Maze. Where was this said?

(I will of course accept EU answers :p )

TwiLek, that says it's may be the Rishi Maze. I really do like the idea of it being the Maze, but I'd like to know if it's comfirmed for sure anywhere.

I remember eading somewhere, either in the ESB novel or some other EU source, that the rendezvous point Liea refers to during the evacuation of Hoth is at a point extremely far out on the edge of the galaxy. When everyone escapes from Bespin, they are finally able to flee to this place and regroup with the other rebels who have been waiting there. Luke and Liea are looking at their own galaxy, from the very far edge.

No way that's their own galaxy. They would have to be too far out there, it'd take years to get that far, even with a good hyperdrive. I think it's more likely that they were just ouside their own galaxy, and looking at the Rishi Maze, which is a smaller sattelite galaxy. I was just wondering where it was confirmed that it was the Rishi Maze.

I think it was mentioned on the DVD Text commentary that they were the same, but since I don't have a DVD player on my computer, I can't back that up.

Besides, if you watch the movies, you'll notice how similar they look.

SoK, LFL always says "may", "might", "perhaps" and all this vague stuff. Why they do that, I don't know. But I think it means it is the Rishi Maze.
Or at least that it's either the Rishi Maze or something very similar. The map Obi-Wan looks at in the Jedi Archives has at least two of those cluster/nebular-thingys.
At least it's not their own whole galaxy, and not ours.

that, or ILM just wanted the scene to look pretty

Okay, I got out my copy of the ESB novel and it says that they are supposed to be looking out at a red star, which is never given a name. That really doesn't make sense to me because the movie really looks like a galaxy.

through careful analysis from the brief picture of the rishi maze from AOTC, blown up and compared to a blown up version of the ESB, i am convinced they are one and the same. and if you trace the coordinates for kimino (sp), and place them on the ESB map, you can see its relatively in that spot, rather than a dark spot. its in the ballpark.

    rather interesting

    That's definately not a galaxy.

There are no stars between galaxies, only empty space. All stars are located within the galaxy. If you were to leave a galaxy and gaze upon it, you would not see stars surrounding it, only other galaxies.

When Luke and Leia are looking at is a Nebula, or known by its name the Rishi Maze.
